"It's not for a queen to hurry - that's for servants". Except in cases where they need to hurry out of an immediate threat to their life. I genuinely wonder how many royals of old have died in disasters and other emergencies because of their attire. It's a funny yet sad thought. Ah, the bitter irony of the human experience.
in Japan a thousand years ago, people wore up to twenty layers of robes. one lady fell into a river while boating and drowned cos her clothes pulled her down.
Must have been very cozy in the wintertime, no central heat back then! However, I can't imagine how stuffy it would have been in the summer, even if it was all, light materials like silk, etc. Yikes. The ensemble does look beautiful, though. :)
They had the mini ice age at the time, and castles may be cold even in summer weather. I do suspect, however, that the wealthy had lighter clothing for summer. Less velvet or fur linings.
I love Dr. Worsley, and Mark Wallis is a jewel. My only complaint about this segment is that the rolle (aka bum roll) and the farthingale should have been pushed more to her hip level. The look was to have this long narrow torso and a sudden, dramatic explosion of skirt. But I'm nit picking: the dress was not made for Dr. Worsley and they probably chose to put it on her in a way that didn't have her stepping up the inside of the gown. This is such a fun bit.
I once dressed up as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and since I have a rather long neck, I had to wear up to 3 ruffs around my neck to fully frame my head and I had a gown with huge billowing sleeves that trailed behind me and a massive train all made of velvet which got really heavy and I was wearing modern heels and I'm surprised I didn't fall flat on my face because of the massive dress which surrounded me.
Oh yes I can see that look coming back, it just takes one designer to convince idiots with money that it's the latest look and before you know it we've all got corsets and hooped skirts.
it did come back... Alexander McQueen fall 2013. Lots of this stuff comes back around, the thing is...it won'tbe at sears or kohls or Kmart. The average ordinary person did not dress like this even 'back then'. If you go to things like the MET gala or the opera, or a ball, thesethings are still used from time to time.
Actually it was very light. Women's gowns were make from rich and light silks and later on cottons but right now they would use linens which were quite light compared to some fabrics we have today.
Wouldn’t the pair of bodies/stays have been spiral laced and not cross laced? I thought cross lacing (which requires two laces) wasn’t utilized until around the 1830s.
I love how cultures can be so dramatically different from each other. He says it's improper for a man to dress a lady. At the this time period in England, men were helping Geisha with their Obis in Japan. Would have been fun to see the 2 cultures mingle (or *try* to). Some high position lady of England visits England, falls in love with the Obi and wants to try one on. 👘 The Obi was put on by men because of their weight so when the proper English lady expects a dainty servant girl to help her put it on and a man calmly steps up .......... 😨😨😨 😳At least she'd have an excuse to swoon.😳
PriorAttire has videos about the toilet business in historical clothing. If they had underpants, it was split drawers, so using a chamber potty was easy.
Que horrible con tanta lesera que se ponían y como lo hacían si querían ir al baño , uf que moda mas horrenda eran bestiduraz matapaciones y en verano el calor y con todo eso puesto.
So cut, how she likes to dress up! The middle-class don't ever really have to grow up. Life is their dandy playpen. Which is all fine, so long as nobody gets hurt or dissenfranchised. Let little Lucy dress up a bit and indulge her psychopathy at the license Fe e payers expense.
Lucy Worsley has the body of a weak woman but the heart and stomach of a king of England
what do you mean "weak woman"
@@maddiepaddy2608 it is a reference to a speech by Elizabeth’s the first. Lucy has made this joke about herself.
I love how she seems to have so much fun with these period pieces.

Phryne Mnesarete In the Heian era right?

He does say that rather than being pushed down it should be in the middle at this time period - i don’t know myself of course!
It's lovely to see Lucy in her favourite costume!
It's like walking around wearing a portable tent lol

How do you use the toilet wearing that?
they put pots underneath they're dresses between they're legs and no one would ever notice, they do it while standing up in public.
They probably used it ahead of time
?! PERSON: Hello darling! Ugh, what's that smell?!
they dont wear underwear....
Go watch piorattire's video on visiting historical and modern toilets while in historical garb.
Wish this series was available online, BBC America doesn't seem to have it - yet!
Strange though it may seem, I actually think that the finished product is a very attractive look.
Why strange? Every thinking person agrees with thou
Till some part i find it nice too, i still want to pull off something like this dresses.
I find the less queenly, though still wealthy clothing of the time nicer. That is too extreme in my eyes.
So glad that I am sitting here in my leggings and sweater !
well its interesting, she gives me couch vibes hahaha

Ali CG its terrifying how possible that actually is.
Ali CG That would be pretty cool if we started dressing elaborately again. It would be quite fun.
I agree, it would be so fun! Maybe not quite so uncomfortable though, a comfier version of this lol
Oh, I hope that it does!

I'd probably fall over from the weight.

Is it strange that when the entire dress is on that it reminds me of those cardboard cutouts that you stick your head in?
This might do well for a 'Scott Mills innuendo bingo!' Think so?
‘Are you in?’
Why do my girlfriends keep asking ME that?

Parkson Voon In every way, shape or form!! Haha.
Parkson Voon WAY MORE DIFFICULT.
I would love to try (even just for a day) being dressed as Elizabeth I whom I so admire
Очень нравятся такое видео спасибо большое за показ
"behead that man, and give that lady a (what?!)" -That word was way too archaic... Not even Google can help me...

Lucy Worsley looking as hot as ever.

While I love Queen Elizabeth I, I do like how Queen Elizabeth II dresses, far less fussy.
Wow so nice.
For the record, not everybody dressed like this.
i mean, obviously.
Her hands look so teeny with all that dress on!
This actually starts at 8:03 in the actual documentary
How I dress in winter
I could survive the winter in this for sure!
Is it just me or the guy sounds exactly like Trott from Hat Films
His voice is a bit deeper and he has a slight lisp lmao but I see what you mean!

I couldn’t imagine putting all that sh** on. I feel so hot just watching !
How do people managed to live back then wearing wide clothes like an umbrella.

Este tipo de vestido se usaba solo para la nobleza, como la reina, especialmente en situaciones de realeza.
يا عيشتن قشرة 💔💔
Твою дивизию😂 какую хрень носили. Одежда Адама и Евы на все времена.
how did they pee
I wonder if women got upset about having to wear that much clothing all the time.
This is what the queen wore, I think ordinary women wore much less than that
Also think of its as armor to protect the lady form the men, they can't get close can they?
The time period apparel looks hot, stuffy, & very limiting. The clothes wore the woman. I'd rather wear the clothes.
Looks extremely uncomfortable
First

What the fuck is this
sad, over rich royals spending their time getting dressed, nothing changes
bottomboil63 Royals? I hope you don't mean the two in the video..
bottomboil63 Sad, over rich people spending their time getting dressed now rather than only Royals.
***** it's a tv show about royals in England history
That looks uncomfortable to wear.
And its not.
