It's pretty much the same stuff as loctite retaining compound and primer if you can't find the park branded stuff. The good news is that they both cost about the same so you're not paying extra for the blue label to match the rest of your tools.

The narrow teeth are the ones that grip the chain the most. Since they are narrower, they wear down faster.
The wide teeth retain the chain from side-to-side play, and their wider profile makes them less prone to wear and tear.

It seems like the adhesive compound is only necessitated by the advent of these splined-style chainring-to-crank interfaces -- I thought the primary selling point of these was "ease of swapping chainrings" but not really the case if you need to use this compound to avoid creaks. I'm inclined to stick with traditional bolted chainrings (various "BCD" standards). Am I missing anything here?

I was going nuts trying to figure out the noise after the new chain was on. I thought at first the shop sold me the wrong one, but it was as recommended for my new 11spd cassette by SRAM. Watched this video and knew it was exactly what you showed, old worn 1x Raceface narrow/wide chainring. Ordered a new chainring, put it on.. voila, no noise! Thank you.

Shimano XT/SLX steel toothed chainrings with composite body are awesome..... as a 200lb rider that does 200 miles per month, I don't want aluminum anywhere in my drive train, especially the chainring. They also solve the having to "glue my kool new DM chainring to my cranks" issue too. lmao

i fixed it by filing away the hook. dished chainrings for bafang mid drive motors aren't that cheap, usually 50-100 bucks.. and the filing nor the wear changes the pitch, teeth will just be thinner, but plenty thick enough to go many more miles.

I was completely out of ideas when my 20 year old Campy 10 speed bike made this noise and i had just replaced the cassette and chain. I tried another new cassette on a different wheel with the same result. Then, I found this video here. Wow, that was the noise. I had trashed a fourth set of chain rings in my lifetime. Since it was C10 and everybody wants C11 or C12 and nobody wants C10 anymore I got a new set of Record UT carbon cranks for only $147 with cups. With the newer Q - factor on the new cranks makes the bike more comfortable than I ever thought it could be. THANKS PARK!

Just watching the footage shows the skinny teeth are the ones grabbing more (not all of them are). Have to agree with others here that they would degrade faster. But I disagree that they are wearing down faster. In terms of lost material, they are probably wearing at about the same rate. But with less surface area on the engagement surface (the one that wears), they will change shape on the profile faster and therefore take on the hooked profile shape sooner. It's not just about more vs. less material. It's specifically the surface area of the wearing surface.

  • @alangarza9548

The skinny, less material is easier to get the hook shape!!!

Probably it’s down to the way the chainring is locked down. I just have experience with Race Face Chinch and had never had an issue on four bikes using (thick) grease. I’d be not delighted to clean that mess up on the crank that is left by the compound.

My Bike Friday Tikit from 2013 has SRAM gripshift with 8 gears. Two years ago it began dropping the chain off the chain wheel. I changed cassette and chain but it didn’t help. I sent a picture of the chain wheel to the BF service people who saw instantly it had passed its due date. Replaced with a new one made of aluminium and it worked very well for a while but now it keeps dropping off and getting stuck between ring and the metal ring that protects my trouser legs from oil. I don’t understand why it drops off?

The narrow teeth since they have less surface area and more prone to shark fin ( wear faster)hence hook the chain. Like most people in the comments stated.

Is it possible for rumble to be BOTH problems? I just put on a new BB and chain thinking that would solve my rumble and now I see it's my 1x chain ring that I just installed last year - along with a new chain. It was noisy when I first installed the chainring but it quieted down. Turns out that it probably ruined the new chain settling in.

Rumble, grind, whatever... my 1X was making the that noise after a brand new 10S chain was installed several months ago. That noise went away after a couple long rides; both chain and wide-narrow ring worked very well together for the next several thousand miles until the chain's wear started to exceed its limit. Just installed a brand new replacement chain, the noise is back... damn! I'm guessing the previous new chain and or the ring quickly 'wore' just enough to totally silence the noise. I'm thinking I'll just get a new chain ring ASAP and forget about it. Nice (helpful) tech news boys!

I find it strange that the very newest in chainring mounting did not completely eliminate any creaking. The splines for cranks seems to have helped with pedal arm noises but the "direct mount" chainring? Not so much. What was used for creaking noises before this two-part wonder glue arrived on the scene? Super glue gel? Small dabs of epoxy? Valve grinding compound? See you on the trail...or tarmac...or gravel. This can happen on 2x and 3x. I have not had the same rumble noise but it will do this on those systems. What it used to be called for them was "Chain Suck" due to the chain being sucked up and pulled around the crankset a second time. There were even pieces on frames to accomodate a plate to prevent it from happening.

Calvin and Truman, I have just built up a brand new bike (I work in a shop) and the chain is grabbing the chainring as if it was worn out. Chainline has no effect on how much it grabs. Why would this happen on a brand new bike with an unused chain/chainring?

Thank you VERY MUCH for this video.
I'm posting this a couple year after the airing of the video, so not sure if you'll see my post and respond. But, would appreciate it if you did.
I have a OneUp single chainring upgrade on my mountain bike. It has a 10 speed cassette with a Shimano CN-HG95 chain. The drive train has a lot of miles on it, but I've always put a new chain on twice a year and regularly check for chain stretch with the Park Tool CC-3. When the chain shows the first sign of stretch I replace it.
The last 3 times I've installed a new chain the bike will make the exact sound that is in the first of your video. It only does this while the chain is new and after about 100 miles it stops making the sound. And only does it when force is applied when pedaling. It doesn't make the sound when riding on flat or downhill sections. I have my bike serviced twice a year at my bike shop and they've never said my drive train is worn or that any ring teeth have shark finned and I don't see any shark fin shapes on any chainring teeth.
    Any suggestions? Thank You.

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 роки тому

How many miles would you guess are on the chainring? Many of the 1x chainrings are only getting about 1000 miles. Some of the early narrow wide rings only got about 700 before wearing. They are aluminum and often are fairly small so they were wearing fairly quickly against the steel chain. They have started to last longer but are still considered a wear item that should be replaced at the same rate as the cassette.
