The Playa Crawler Construction

  • This video shows the design and build process of The Playa Crawler as well as a few set backs and redesigns that were needed to get it to a working state.
    The Playa Crawler is what's considered a "mutant vehicle" or "art car" and is a piece of kinetic art. I made it to be used as my own personal vehicle to get around at Burning Man and i wanted something interesting and unique so I created a chair that walks with the legs. the leg linkage was invented by Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist who creates this massive walking sculptures called Strandbeest that walk along the beach being pushed by the wind. I designed the Playa Crawler with the Dieselpunk aesthetic in mind which is why the body has lightening holes much like you'd see on the interior of an airplane wing.
    To be clear this isn't any form of wheelchair alternative as wheels are, in fact, pretty hard to beat in terms of efficiency and flexibility on differing terrain.
    Make sure to turn on captions to read descriptions of the clips and photos you're seeing.

      Could be a villain or just a character that is unusual like lives in a complex house with many kinds of turning gears and machinery. Some fantasy settings have characters like that.

      @@zenichiworks3637 hmmm... Combining a gyroscopic stabilizer just under the seat and a set of spring shocks connecting the seat to the legs should make the ride smooth as butter.
      Theoretically you could then lengthen the legs to increase speed and add stair climbing ability now that the legs can tilt while the chair remains upright.

    Insane work, like something out of a post apocalypse movie. If it went faster then a whole lot better
    Awesome

    • @zenichiworks3637
      @zenichiworks3637  6 років тому +10

      It could technically go faster but it means the legs have to move just that much more which i fear would end up damaging them. if the legs were bigger they could take longer strides but that comes with its own set of issues.

    You could integrate springs into the legs that push the legs down. this would decrease the peak stress on both the legs and the motors and should increase performance.

    • @slaapkonijn58
      @slaapkonijn58 4 місяці тому +1

      Why? Isn't the whole point of this mechanism is that the legs are moving in a straight line. I.e. not pushing up. So adding springs would not do much?

    This man went to the renaissance era, and gave them a crankshaft out of what was left of the engine of his dad's beat up Jeep and said,"This is one of many parts of a machine that we have in the future. This machine is used for travel and can turn around 360 degrees, climb and go around rough terrain and do so in a way that keeps the driver up steadily to keep them comfortable even when they reach a violent gap in the path ahead. Although it contains many moving mechanical parts that work together and perfectly timed to do all of these things. This is the part that times everything by spinning constantly moving the parts that make it move and keeps them synced up perfectly so they keep the machine's weight balanced, preventing it from shaking." and then Da Vinci responded,"like this?" and then this man, was like,"yeah... spot on."
