I'm guessing you should be able to screw it in as well through the metal since your gonna cover it with mud and paint

The LEDs can be whatever you want.
Why does it matter?
ALL LEDS in the world are DC. EVERY led requires converted to make AC to DC. SOme have built-in some needs special so called led driver
