This week I'm finally getting around to demoing my recently acquired First Act Custom Shop DC-9/12. I have been hunting a DC-9 for nearly a decade, so it has been really fun to get to play one. Keep in mind that this sort of conversion can be accomplished on any 12-string guitar!
This particular DC-12 is roughly 10% smaller than all of the other DC-6's I've owned, and also has a slightly thinner body (1.5" vs. the more typical 1.785"). In terms of playability, I find it almost more like an SG than a LP, although it has the sustain more typical to a LP. The scale length is 25.125". In terms of weight, it's right at 9.0lbs.
The guitar is setup in C-Standard Tuning with the following string gauges 0.010, 0.010, 0.013, 0.013, 0.017, 0.017, 0.030, 0.042, 0.052.

1st lesson alone is worth the price...
@@NurfHerderEclipse for sure!
I know the history behind it, but hearing “First Act” and “Custom Shop” in the same sentence still makes me laugh.
they are night and day difference
custom shops are pretty amazing but pricey
If you think you’re going to pick up one of these from Walmart you are mistaken. You’ll need to go to Sam’s club! lol
@@allenmitchell09 Pick up a case of guitars, for that bulk savings.
It’s just funny to me how Mr. Pike is oblivious to the deleterious effect that the relationship with Walmart has had on the public’s brand perception of First Act, no matter how good their custom shop models may be. They could literally be the best electric guitar on planet earth and nobody would know because “oh, doesn’t Walmart carry First Act guitars?”.
@@allenmitchell09 if they were sold anywhere else it would still come down to the fact that 99% of the guitars they make are cheap crap. Any maker can build a good instrument for the right price. Hell, Gibson will sell you a custom shop Maestro if you have the money. Doesnt make the Maestro brand any less crap.
Its kind of unbelievable how these sound. If there weren't any visuals of this guitar, it would almost lead you to believe its multi-tracked with effects. Very remarkable sound.
definitely!
@@DoesItDoom Now I want a "Best Choice" guitar🎸
Awesome, I didn't realise that I needed a 9 string in my life until now, thanks dude!
Do it!
This sounds absolutely crazy in a good way.
Really cool guitar for sure. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I’ve always wanted to experiment with something like a DC 9 or a BC rich 10 string. I feel like those BC rich 10 strings could work really well in a doom scenario.
Yes! I'm way into the 10-String BC Rich Bich guitars!
Smh I almost had my hands on a model that was a little over 300 bucks. Then, I say to my self I would get it later because I guessed I was the only one that wanted that guitar. Whent back to the guitar store that weekend and..... Gone.....smh
NOTHINS BETTER THAN A BICH !!
The Matt Pike/Brent Hinds guitar!
Yes!!
I think you mean Bill Kelliher. Brent never played a FAC
Edit: I stand corrected :)
@@thathandleistakentrythisone He did, they both played them around the time Crack the Skye came out, Brent also played a FAC based on the Mosrite body shape.
@@thathandleistakentrythisone he totally did. He has a couple, the coolest in my opinion being the double neck.
@@thathandleistakentrythisone brent indeed did play one
I had no idea First Act made guitars of this caliber!
They had a Custom Shop in the 2000s and put out some great stuff. I've owned one Lola CS from them have one of their midrange guitars based of the CS stuff it's an ME343 or something like that but has the same Kent Armstrong pups and sounds amazing. It was $440 new. The neck has a ridiculous amount of flame in it too which is awesome.
They do, top of the line first act gear is the equivalent to lower intermediate level fender or Gibson gear
@@Am71919 It's the same luthiers that worked for Gibson Custom so even higher level.
@@cysoun I stand corrected
Thank you my friend
Thank you for all the great music and inspiration. Always looking forward to the next episode of Guitartial Arts!
Gorgeous axe and sweet riffs! Nice explanation! Cheers!
Thanks Zach.
First Act Custom Shop guitars were brilliant. The guy who ran their shop had previously run Gibson's custom shop.
I love the sound of the 9string on this guitar.🤘🏿😈
A very unique guitar!
Cool guitar, love the effect with the dual strings. Nice Spiral Architect intro. Crumbs just realised its 32 years since I saw Sleep at Liverpool Royal Court!
Just catching up on your videos Steve, really enjoying them.
That guitar is soooo sick.
Agreed!
Hey I think it would be cool if you did a breif video on some of the popular basses used in the doom, sludge and the stoner genres of metal
Need a few more bass guitars!
Rickenbacker? Jazz and p bass
FINALLY!! DC9! btw, that last riff is fire!! Now I can sleep well
Waste of Tiamat is such an incredible tune. Massive riffs abound!
Sounds absolutely monstrous. So jelly
It’s killer man. I’m lucky to be it’s keeper. 🤘🏻
Snakes For the Divine got me through some dark times and that is 100% my dream guitar. Wowzers to say the least.
Incredible record for sure!
Needs a remaster
crack the skye and death in this comunion two of my all time favourite albuns and a lot of this guitar in them
Most definitely!
That thing sounds massive!👍💪🤟
Greetings from Finland.🇫🇮
Really cool guitar for sure. Thanks for watching!
That's a very unique sonic approach. Thanks for another great video!🤙
Thanks for checking it out!
Good video . Cool guitar.sounds good
Thanks dude.
What an awesome instrument. New to the channel, it reminds me of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats and I'm a big fan! I dig it.
Very cool instrument for sure. Thanks for checking out the channel!!
would love to hear some jazzy chords with that guitar, Pike was right when it sounds like you have a chorus pedal on for the higher strings
For sure.
I don't know what any of this is about, but I like it!
Haha!! Thanks for watching!
Huge sound. That thing is killer
Killer guitar for sure. Thanks for watching, Royce!
That’s awesome! I love unison strings and that’s the best of both worlds.
Definitely a very cool sound!
Waste of Tiamat--what a tune hail Matthew of Pike.
HAlL!🙌🏻
Yeah that's my fucking holy Grail right there brother
I've converted myself 🙏 The holiest of grails.
Haha! I agree!
That is the most gorgeous guitar I have ever seen
AFTER WORK TODAY GONN ROUT OUT MY NECKTHROUGH BICH FOR THE 10STRING MOD!! BEEN TO LAZY..AND NOW WITH SHITTY WEATHER ITS TIME BOSS!!!
That guitar just sounds so good.
Killer for sure.
beautiful sounding guitar, and that riff was soooo sick. damn pretty too
Killer guitar for sure!
Just ordered your wizard shirt. Nice Vid Steve. Groovy AF.. Peace Bro.
Thanks for grabbing the shirt, Hippie! Glad you liked the vid.
@@DoesItDoom No worries Steve Peace Bro.
Love first act customs! I actually bought one of Jeff from High on fires delgada bass guitars and it's my pride and joy.
That’s awesome!!! Did you get his black on or the red one!? I had a red one long ago.
@@DoesItDoom I got his black one, the thing fucking rips! Use it in the band Monolithian and it never ceases to have gear heads drooling.
@@simonwalker602 no fucken doubt!!! He dropped a P-bass style pickup in the middle there too, I think!? So rad that you own that.
I remember getting ragged on for playing a first act tuned to C# and the sound was awesome. Obvioualy I swapped out some hardware and strings but I loved it. Sounded better than an RD but was heavier than hell. Still loved it. Played thru a modded Peavey Windsor half. I miss that rig.
Love the finish on that 9 and yeah seeing MP in a Guitar World mag with a pic of it. I had to go hear it. As always man, tune low, play slow......
Oh, I am so jelly. 😆. I have looked for this for ever.
Me too, man! So excited to finally have one.
@@DoesItDoom I have looked near and far, I guy had one for sale about 8 years ago (suppossedly) on some forum..that was the last I heard of one... Did, um, did you buy this directly from Pike? Look, if you can't say ... Just give me a wink
@@juanvaldez5422 I did not. Had the owner email me directly to see if I was interested though.
Seger also makes a 9 string that looks really killer.
Wow! Sounds great! You’re playing is becoming quite tasty!!
Thanks, brother. Would like to be able to play through all of Waste of Tiamat at some point. Killer riffage.
I love seeing these small companies take it to the big overpriced names.
You should check out Hagstrom guitars.
SUPER UNDERRATED
Such a rad guitar! Nice interesting tuning too 👌
For sure!
MY MAN REALLY BUSTED OUT THE LATE DECEMBER BY SYSC INSTANT SUBSCRIBE
Pike RULES!
That Spiral Architect tho... 🔥🤘🏿 great looking and sounding guitar!
Such a killer tune! Thanks brother!
All of my favorite bands played these guitars. Dream guitar for sure i wish i could just find one 😂
Not only is that a killer looking guitar , love the sound of the same tuned high strings. At first I thought it might be thicker sound but it wasn't as they break up a little on bends and creating different tones! I don't even know if what I'm saying is right but well done!!
Yes, very chorus-like sound with some cool dissonance at times. Really neat.
I seen high on fire with Opeth in 2009, didn't realize how lucky I was till years later. Super small venue in saskatoon
I also use 11-52 in C Standard. (11,14,18,28,42,52 to be exact) Elixir Polywebs.
It dooooooms, so sonic
Agreed!
I got an Ibanez artcore 12string semi hollow coming home in a few days! I’m really looking at doing this 9-string thing to it!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome!
Oof. Sounds rad! Cheers, Steve.
Thanks, Larry! Such a rad guitar.
That guitar is all Pike 🤘🤘🤘
Yes!
Damn ...that beast sings beautifully🤘🏿👹😎🤘🏿
that is an awesome idea!!
Nice! She's a pretty one!
For sure!
I’ve wanted a dc 9 for years. Such a great ideal to just use the 12 and pull 3 strings off. Hold on I’m headed to to reverb.
It works great! Have heard from a few people who have done it.
Nice! I have the two dc6’s made for Pete Adams when he was in Baroness.
So rad! Let me know if you’re ever looking to sell!!!
@@DoesItDoom I am actually thinking about selling. Here’s the back story...
I know Pete and his brother Jake, and have shared the stage a bunch over the years (them in Valkyrie, and me in my old band Da Bris, and current band Crab Action,) here in Harrisonburg, VA. Pete asked the owner of a local guitar store (Wonder Records) if he’d help him sell them after he left Baroness, and the owner being a mutual friend, helped us work out a deal and I was able to scoop them both up. One was used to record the first half of the Blue Record, and the other one for the second half. I was able to find the original listings he made on Reverb

Wow! A couple incredible guitars. Definitely drop me an email at steve@doesitdoom.com if looking to sell.
@@DoesItDoom Will do!
i miss pete adams era baroness
That's really cool! I'd like to hear that guitar played clean ;ala post-rock .
god fucking dammit that guitar is the shit
A beauty for sure
is that iommi on the wall behind you?
I’m not sure what brand it was, I’d have to dig around, but Nils Frykdahl used to play a 12 string. It just adds so much to heavy guitar playing.
Nice!
I want a first act 9 string so bad, although Bill Kelliher turned me onto it(he still uses it live to play Ghost of Karelia)
Very cool axe Steve!!! Congrats on getting your hands on one!!! I just recently started listening to High on Fire. I liked Matt Pike in Sleep, I had never really listened to High on Fire, I think mainly because I got them confused with The Winery Dogs. I’m not sure why that happened???!!! Either way, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with High on Fire!!! Cool video, thanks for sharing your new axe with us!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Such an incredible band! Glad you liked the video.
That’s a really rad guitar & interesting that it’s a bit smaller than the DC6. I wonder if that was at the request of whoever it was originally built for, or if all of the 12s are slightly smaller than the 6s.
Yeah, curious to know as well. Matt’s 9 is definitely full size. I didn’t know until it showed up but knew instantly that it was smaller. Have grown to like the size a lot-it’s really nice to play (like an SG) but sounds and sustains more like a LP.
that sounds killer
Rad guitar for sure!
I can't wait to get the walshart exclusive model.
Dude it’s too sick.
So rad man!
For some reason, I just wanna do bong hits and watch him jam on that Walmart guitar!🤘🏻
Spoke with a dude that worked at 30th st guitars in NYC. Super nice guy and he was somehow involved with the custom shop? either way, really awesome guitars from a snapshot in time
The Danelectro of DOOM.
Can’t believe I subbed based off the name and didn’t even realize it was matt pike
Thanks for the sub!
Hey my doomy men, how about a demostration of a feedback pedal for sludgy bois?
Could do! Drop a specific request on the official lesson/demo request list at www.doesitdoom.com/requests
I love strange custom setups
I have seen your channel before and thought of it as pretty groovy. But when you got into 5:34 to 6:03, that was notes I needed in my life. Then from 6:03 to 6:21, I just wanted to rip my heart out and drown it in gasoline and let it burn till it is charcoal dust.. Christ man, that was some Sabbath shit there. Fuck me running. WOW!!!!
"I'm gonna play some clean tones...not on this video, just eventually."
Probably not even eventually.
Seger Guitars makes a 9 string too. Matt Pike and the guy from Clutch have one. They’re roughly 4 grand.
Dallas does beautiful work. Awesome guitars and a great dude.
@@DoesItDoom Indeed. I’ve had many a great conversation with him, and not just music.
The Walmart first acts suck, but their custom shops kick ass, very nice axes
Indeed.
Not all the store bought ones are crappy I have two of em and the strat type pickups are way hotter than squires and the other with the humbuckers sounds warm and plays extremely well and comfortable.
That thing is legit!
For sure!
The guy from Bolzer plays a Baritone 10 string tuned to A and runs two guitar amps and one bass amp with an octave down
Damnit man i'm already spendin a bunch of money, why you gotta bring this shit in front of me too??? XD Awesome demo dude, guitar is absolutely wicked!!
Thanks, Eric. I'm so thrilled to have finally found one!
Sounds like old-school desert rock qotsa vibe 👍
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes, some definite Kyuss tone going on there!
Thanks, Janusz! Such a rad guitar!
Do a video on Reverend sensei ra its amazing for doom
Hey Steve, when removing the 3 octave strings from the lower string, is there a spacing difference then say a typical 6 string, or are they relatively close
It’s a bit different, but didn’t cause me any issues while playing. Others have had the same experience. You can always replace the nut if it bothers you though.
@@DoesItDoomthanks for the insight! Building a 9 string Les Paul, and from a hardware perspective this seems like the easiest route. Maybe swap the top three saddles to single string also.
A rumour of war tab would be cool
Indeed it would!
Very cool now I want one.always thought they made beginner crap but this is a looker
Their custom shop was incredible. Just a bit ahead of their time.
10 gauge strings in C Standard? That's something you don't hear every day.
since the guitar was designed to be 12 string, you think youll run into setup/intonation issues from taking off the other strings? also does the fingerboard feel wider than the other DC? that finish is amazing, killer guit-fiddle there Steve
No real intonation or setup issues to speak of aside from needing to get the 3rd string nut slot widened to better accommodate the 0.017 unison string. It’s probably one of my best playing guitars. The fingerboard is standard width. Definitely a killer!
that's pretty awesome. Are there lower cost alternatives to this around?
Your best bet would be to find some sort of cool, old 12-String electric and do the same sort of "conversion".
Harley Benton has a cheap electric 12 string, but it is semihollow. I probably get it at some point.
she is perfect....
Agreed!
Would that string setup harm the neck over time?
Being smaller in body size, and having a big head, does it my make it prone to neck-dive? I dumped my SG because the one l bought online was unbearable.
Check out this doom!!!!
I’m trying to find where to get a First Act sg style guitar, it’s next to impossible to find, can you help please? Thanks Greetings from the midlands in England.
Woodrite will have some Warlords available here on Wednesday at 12PM EST. First Act DC guitars are next to impossible to find. doesitdoom.com/product/warlord
Ok, I'm new here....so, what's with the first act? I don't get it.....
Steve, if you go through a period of not playing it, set it back up to a 12 string. The neck will not last forever without the even tension. My 12 setup like this was ruined after 3 years, and I believe the same thing happened to Mr. Pikes. I believe there's a video of Matt pretty frustrated about his 9 string's neck twisting.
The tension just doesn't feel like it will twist the neck to be honest. 10/10, 13/13, 17/17, 30, 42, 52 in C-Standard isn't much tension. I asked Matt about his and he said he's been playing it a bunch again as of late. I'll ask a few others who I know have them. Thanks for the info!
@@DoesItDoom ah good to know, thanks for the update. Maybe it was just my guitar then, but I thought he toasted it.
@@DoesItDoom I loved it while I had it though. I also added the 6th strings octave string back but tuned it to a 5th. It sounded massive galloping the 6th, might constrain your note choices but fun to play with. Do you think you'll get a new nut/saddles that slot 6, 5 and 4 down the center so you don't have the slight offset?
@@gregguepy763 I don’t think I’ll change out the nut. I don’t notice the offsets while playing at all tbh.
@@DoesItDoom 👍well nice find man, I do envy that find! I'll live vicariously through you for now lol!
Maybe we can get a 12 string warlord in the future? In this color, with a matching back
♥Tiamat
Steve do you play any flying V guitars?
