- A not that well known easter egg in MGS. To do this, go to the option menu and change your sound from stereo to monaural. During the fight against Liquid in his Hind D, call Campbell two times.

I think I triggered this codec call once. Even though our TV was stereo, the AV input was at the back of the TV. Since I can't reach it when I was kid, I usually plug my PS1's RCA cable in the front AV input, which was Mono.

:3 I first played this game on a little four-inch black-and-white mono TV that didn't even have a RF hookup or RCA plugs. I had to jimmy-rig the RF connector for my PS1 to the TV's antenna and carefully tune it to the right channel.
I feel like if the game had known the full depths of my hobo-ing it, I'd have gotten a call from Campbell with just '...really... Snake....? ....Is training Huskies paying that little nowadays...?' XD

This is literally one of my favorite video games of all time and this is the first I've ever heard of this conversation.
Even if you had a mono TV, you could just connect the left channel, set the sound to stereo, and then go by how loud the helicopter sound was. If it was loud, left side. If it was very quiet, right side. Surprised your crack support team didn't come up with that workaround.

ALmost 25 years later and still a great game, despite the "technical limitations" The art and entertainmnet speak for themselves ->.
I remember this happened when I was playing with my bedroom TV - which happened to have a white and yellow RCA jack. I literally lost my shit wondering how they knew.
There NEEDS to be a breaking of the 4th wall in the movie. Something about the cinema you're watching it in. Then for the Bluray/Netflix copy they can change it to shame you for watching the film at home.
That is, if cinemas ever recover from this mess...
I loved this when I was a kid. I was hooked up with an RF adapter into a mono TV that didn't even have AV/composite inputs. All my consoles were daisychained in over RF adapters, from SNES to PS2/xbox.

It's not too complicated, actually - basically, the game is programmed so that these lines will be spoken if it registers "Monaural" to be activated in the settings.

Wow, that's incredible. So I'm assuming during development someone must have brought up how anyone who chooses mono will struggle with the helicopters sound...It's crazy how this is like next level thinking but at the same time common sense
Developers don't always think about these common sense things during a two to three year or even one year development span. Kojima's eye for detail that has been around since the original Metal Gear is what allows it.
@@aaronwatt8372 The problem is Kojima is involved with a team of people. Anytime someone discovers something in Metal Gear they automatically give Kojima all the credit like he's the sole developer. I'm curious to know if he specifically caught this or if someone had brought like to the situation etc. etc.

It was just a funny way of Kojima showing how they leveraged audio technology in game. It’s very easy to miss so Kojima threw this joke in.

This seems trivial now, but in the 90s TVs were super expensive, so the cheaper budget line TVs had moneral sound to reduce the cost.
Something we take for granted when we can get a cheap HD 1080p with stereo sound for around 100 bucks.
