I did some research on Marshall Applewhite’s background: he was homosexual, and his father, Marshall Applewhite Sr. was a tough-minded Presbyterian minister. When he found out that his son was gay, he completely and utterly rejected him; “What sins have I committed for the Lord to scorn me this way?”. As a result, Applewhite Jr. went through a period of mental deterioration and was feeling suicidal, and then he met Bonnie Nettles, and they formed Heaven’s Gate together. Because his childhood faith rejected him for being gay, he concluded his body was an aberration, and that probably explains why he fervently advocated sexual abstinence among his followers. Outwardly, he presented celibacy as being required to enter the “Next Level”.
@ohhiitsjustme3445 lol as if Christianity is truth either, it's another cult. in fact the biggest cult of all time. Jesus was not a divine man. He never resurrected, he's mere dirt that a cow shits on today.
Yeah. I’m religious and even though I don’t agree with other religions, I don’t call them evil or make fun of them for believing it. Seeing these types of comments saddens me. Because it makes people think all people who are religious are bad when really not all of them are.
I think cults are fascinating. I also think the dialogue around them in comparison to main stream religions are interesting. I do think a conversation about what constitutes a religion and what constitutes a cult is much needed. I hear a fair amount of people say "all religions are cults", but there's something that definitely distinguishes a cult as we think of them and religion as we know it. My thoughts are that cults keep the "sacred knowledge" hidden from you, and you have to pass through "stages" or "rituals" to get the full knowledge, usually in the form of blatant schemes, such as paying for the next level, or doing something (like a sexual favor or a shaming ritual or something) to gain the next level or "prove" your loyalty. Religions are belief systems, that while they may seem out there, are usually grounded on a historical figure whose teachings are readily available. For instance, a buddhist monk will tell you what Buddha taught and how he lived and why following his teachings benefit your life, complete with teachings on Karma and reincarnation and what not. In other words, you can ask a Buddhist what they believe, and they'll just tell you. You don't have to join to find out, ascend through levels, only to find out that Buddha actually requires you to have sex with your guru to gain enlightenment or something of that nature. You could say that about other religions. Most Christians would just tell you that Jesus is the son of God and he died for your sins and all that. You're free to think it sounds crazy from day 1, or to believe it. Now, mind you, I'm characterizing the mainstream versions of these two religions. There are absolutely Christian cults (like most of the cults in this video) and also Buddhist/ eastern mysticism based cults or even a mix of multiple religions rolled up into one. But I would argue that the basic versions of most world religions can't just be black marked as cults in the strictest sense. There's a complex history and culture involved in them, and perhaps enough worldwide followers to at least push against the more culty tendencies of some members. But those are just some thoughts, and i can already see plenty of counterarguments to my points. That being said, anyone have any thoughts? Whats the difference (if any) between religions and cults?
@@ExplainersEnigmaI disagree with his secret knowledge and rituals. Almost all religions have sacred or special clothing, some worship in temples where certain words or knowledge is kept secret and not revealed to others. I think that is like most businesses also. They value privacy of information and just don’t hand it out to people who aren’t authorized to do so. Yes a religion can be too secretive or top heavy in power and authority. There is a difference between secret and sacred. Some things are sacred. Some things are secret. Businesses don’t tell you when and why people are fired. Religions also do this with protected information or not letting people access to buildings or information without permission. So his paragraph doesn’t take this into account. I agree we should study the religion of others but we should be careful about what we learn about them and what they believe without doing what Democrats do to Trump. That is taking their beliefs, comments, etc out of context.
One of the things I noticed is that cults borrow from other religions-in this case the theology and then invent their own belief systems and traditions, all while hiding behind the religion whose theology they took from. If/when they get kicked out of their churches or houses of worship, they still hold onto the identity of the religion they took from as a way to draw people into their belief system. I'm a Christian but growing up when I met Jehovah's Witnesses at my door(the youngest that I remember is 10 when I met them), I thought they were just another denomination because of "Jehovah" in Jehovah's Witnesses, so I didn't mind accepting books from them, though I never went to Kingdom Hall or converted to Jehovah's Witnesses. It took me a long while to find out that they were a cult(I was 14 when I discovered this). One of my cousins who's a pastor, saw me with NWT(New World Translation of Holy Scriptures)-Jehovah's Witnesses bible, which a Jehovah's Witness gave me on a door to door visit. It looked like a regular Bible to me although nowhere on it did it specifically say "Bible" on it, and I looked inside and other than "Jehovah" being the most repetitive word, I didn't see any red flags. My cousin broke down the Jehovah's Witness doctrine for me and their interpretation of who Jesus is(my cousin had the priveledge to interview and have a theological discussion with Jehovah's Witnesses when they came to his door a couple years ago and he invited them inside) and I also asked a family friend if there's any differences between the NWT and the Bible because I can't seem to find any differences besides Jehovah coming up multiple times, and then he showed me John 1:1 in the Bible and then in the NWT Bible ⬇ John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." NWT ⬇ John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god" Overall, I think it would be safe to say cults are moreso knockoff religions since they borrow from other religions theology and simply "rebrand" and add their own extreme traditions and then use the original religion as a mask to pull people into the cult.
@@sweetie.pie.757In that light, you could say Christianity and Islam are cults because they are plagiarized from Judaism, and rebranded the stories and characters for their own purposes. Those religions would not even exist without Judaism, so they could be thought of as cult/ offshoots of Judaism. But I tend to think most Christians will not self isolate or wear specific clothing to mark themselves as part of the “devout faithful”, and they won’t threaten members for leaving with death, and they don’t practice child marriage, or go against the laws of the country to do illegal things (like stuff with children or polygamy) in private. Having said that, I do think the ultra devout “orthodoxy” of all 3 of those major religions does live firmly in cult land!
If I may, you could include the forerunners to the modern Pentecostal Christian denomination who actually did very bad if not downright illegal stuff. You had John Alexander Dowie who asked for “tithes” whenever someone wanted to be healed and faked most of the healings by planting folks who pretended to be healed. Then you had Frank W. Sanford who was also an end-times cult leader with his own commune in Maine. His movement had been responsible for several instances of illness and death of his members including men, women, and children; this resulted in him serving jail time on manslaughter charges. Finally you have the infamous Charles Fox Parham, who had taught many unorthodox things and was responsible for several murders in Zion, Illinois. These murders were a result of his followers “exorcizing” folks in a violent manner. There’s plenty of information out there from both newspapers and websites that tell us the truth about these conmen, criminals, and crooks who do all sorts of terrible things in the name of spreading Christianity when in fact it was nothing but.
I could see how this was overlooked considering how most Xian's perceive any faith-based group that isn't Xian as Satan's trickery, even other denominations of Xianity. Satanism is a many splintered thing so to speak, like Freemasonry, they accept quite a few world views into their circle. The general public's concept of Satanism though would for the most part be an aftermath of the Satanic Panic of the 80's and is somewhat inaccurate and was meant to be more of a scare tactic to demonize subculture of that time.

Excellent work, one small detail. Approximately 600 of the Jonestown casualties were murdered by the 300 who drank the Koolaid. About two thirds of the victims died by homicide, not suicide. Additionally, the initial ending to the Conan the Barbarian was going to contain the mass suicide of Thulsa Doom's cult after his beheading, but this was changed at the last minute out of sensitivity for the Jonestown victims.

Have you guys heard of the Prophet Rael? He says in 1973 in France he was visited by an alien named Yahweh who explained that all life on Earth was created scientifically by scientists from his civilization (known to us as ‘Elohim’) and that their interactions with humanity throughout history created the religions. They educated select prophets to guide humanity and spread a message of peace and love. These prophets include Moses, Elijah, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and many others. Now that we’re advanced enough to understand this they want us to build an embassy to welcome them, the prophecised ‘Third Temple’. Rael wrote down the information in a book called “Intelligent Design - Message from the Designers”.

The Church of the Lamb of God was known for polygamous relationships and murders of rival leaders and dissenting members and although its leader died, series of murders continued until the 1980s. It was so bad that it received the moniker as a Mormon murder cult. It basically broke away from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest Mormon denomination, due to their stance on being against polygamous practices
@@ExplainersEnigmaThere's also the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which broke off from the LDS Church over polygamous relationships and faced legal issues after reports of child marriages and statutory SA by its leader, Warren Jeffs.
That explains how he became like this but of course doesn't justify anything.

Yeah. I’m religious and even though I don’t agree with other religions, I don’t call them evil or make fun of them for believing it. Seeing these types of comments saddens me. Because it makes people think all people who are religious are bad when really not all of them are.
@@SebastianTheMemer Agreed.
@@SebastianTheMemerpst..islam is the exception though right?
Wow, thanks for this in depth comment. I agree with you and everyone should read your thoughts.
@@ExplainersEnigma appreciate the feedback! I loved the video
My cousin broke down the Jehovah's Witness doctrine for me and their interpretation of who Jesus is(my cousin had the priveledge to interview and have a theological discussion with Jehovah's Witnesses when they came to his door a couple years ago and he invited them inside) and I also asked a family friend if there's any differences between the NWT and the Bible because I can't seem to find any differences besides Jehovah coming up multiple times, and then he showed me John 1:1 in the Bible and then in the NWT
Bible ⬇
John 1:1
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
NWT ⬇
John 1:1
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god"
Overall, I think it would be safe to say cults are moreso knockoff religions since they borrow from other religions theology and simply "rebrand" and add their own extreme traditions and then use the original religion as a mask to pull people into the cult.
How cults start: It's the end of the world!!!!
My Jesus help us ✝️🙏🕊
If I may, you could include the forerunners to the modern Pentecostal Christian denomination who actually did very bad if not downright illegal stuff.
Thanks Ethan, noted.

They educated select prophets to guide humanity and spread a message of peace and love. These prophets include Moses, Elijah, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and many others. @@vygalnix7769 and how it's organized, who the leader is, how much members are manipulated to give money to the cause etc.

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

You missed Progressivism lol
That's a political philosophy, no? A bit off-topic I'd say.
@@ExplainersEnigma No i would so its primarily a religious philosophy enacted by the state. But noticed the meta in the comments "you missed thing I don't like" so i wanted to join in haha
@@EMO_alpha There's a "Meta" everywhere, huh? Miss the good old days without Meta.
@@ExplainersEnigma Nice! The old "hatin metas meta" CLASSIC! haha
@@ExplainersEnigma it's a death cult
They all have Christianity in common, I wonder what that means?
Twin Flame Universe which was recently featuted in Netflix (or Amazon?) if I'm correct...
Didn't know that one, thanks!
Too bad he forgot the Palmarian Church. One of the most interesting ones.
Never heard of them, thanks! Noted and added to the list.
I agree with other comments that you forgot Islam not to mention the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses
Fair enough, but I don't consider ANY religion a cult, especially if you compare them to the sects mentioned in the video. It's just a completely different ballgame.
@@ExplainersEnigma Y have a valid point. Though this video reminds of a Philosophy Teacher I met three decades ago that sad "All Religions were at some point referred to as a cult at one point in time" Even now this quote always makes me think about this subject.
@@pross6525 You also have a valid point, but I wanted to only focus on "real" cults in this video that had a real story behind them. Of course you can find tons of stuff about religions, although this is a completely different topical scope. The gruesomeness and madness of these cult leaders (which were all clearly identified), is just mindboggling.
@@ExplainersEnigma I agree completely the things that go on in cults are mindboggling and interesting and horrifying. It's amazing how many people get drawn into cults and how much faith people put into a cult. Not to mention what people will sacrifice and give up for a cult.
@@pross6525 It's unreal how desperate some people must be to follow these lunatics blindly. Very sad to be honest...
Do you think orthodoxe religions are similar to cults and sects ? In their process and patterns
They are ALL cults!
I don't consider whole religions as cults, that doesn't really fit my definition of it. Too broad, too general, no real guru.
The “You missed mormons🤓” comments are so misinformed might as well include calvinism, catholicism and public school💀
Might as well include "Eating" as a cult
Colonia Dignidad needs to be on here.
Never heard of them, interesting.
S U R E !
Where is Ant Hill Cult bro this is probably the worst of all
Agreed, yep I oversaw them sorry. Maybe included in the next one.
Is there going to be a part 2?
Let's see if you got enough interesting ones since we covered the most gruesome here already.
You forgot the Black Hebrew Israelites
They get covered in Part 2 with a specific one.
At 12:39, you are wrong about Manson. There was never a cult. He wasn't a failed musician. In fact, producer Terry Melcher was getting ready to put a Manson record out until Charlie shot Lotsapoppa (because Tex Watson got scared. That was his business, not Manson's).
Speaking of Tex, he was the one who did the main killings. It had to do with a three-way drug triangle between the Tate house, the LaBianca's, and him.
You forgot the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses.
They might be covered in Part 2
There is a cult called "Lev Tahor" which is Hebrew for "pure heart" that is also very cruel
Also "mount carmel" is the name of the mountain my town is literally built on.
Check out Part 2, I covered Lev Tahor there: ua-cam.com/video/d-Ep1ARWuck/v-deo.html
You have a different voice in that one... @@ExplainersEnigma
@@dontreadthat yep that's my own voice. The other was an external voice actor. Better or worse?
@@ExplainersEnigma shouldnt matter in educational videos like this but i kinda loved the one in the first part better because when he was describing some of the abusive actions by some of the cults it kinda sounded like it was hard for him to tell about

Why do most cult leaders and members look strange and dead inside? I remember listening to Dr Eric berg (keto diet influencer) all his advice sounded good but he himself seemed dead and arrogant he turned out to be a high ranking Scientology member.
For real? I also watched quite some of his videos. Oh boy...
Can't wait for people accusing normal religions of being cults
Nvm they are already doing it
🤣 yeah they're on a mad one
And this shows that Jesus is the way the truth and the life
No it doesnt
Interestingly enough virtually all of these (except Scientology) based on the Bible and/or Christianity.
True, at least the ones we covered and are known in the West.
Sad. These monsters use Christ as an excuse to do all of these horrible things. Lemme tell ya, that is NOT what he stands for.
A very twisted form of it.
@@TheMenaceHimself2006 Mhm. It had been warned in the Bible that this kind of stuff would happen (like in Matthew 24:24 and Matthew 7:15), and lo and behold, it is happening. Stay safe and alert brothers and sisters, don’t let yourselves be deceived.
Waco was a tragic event and the FBI started the fire and caused way more issue then they should have . Very very sad . So much happened
You should put ISLAM in there
