Mate, it sounds like you did the right thing at th3 right time. That job would have just got worse and worse as he would have continuously questioned what you were doing and why. I know it was a paying job but your mental health is worth much more, rather than stress about how shit the job was just focus on the bullet you have avoided and concentrate on something more positive.
Good choice of words Steve all so very true 👍🏴
All tradesmen can relate. Working for myself for almost 40 years i've gained a 6th sense and i can suss people out within a couple of minutes of being in their house. If iget 'that feeling', i make my excuses and leave. I always go with my gut feeling, every time.
Always trust your gut feeling if it starts to go beep beep then time to go can’t be dealing with shitty customers 👍🏴
Spot on, nature gave us intuition for a reason. If you avoid the crap it leaves room for the good things.
Often your experience is picking up on personality disorders of these potential customers. Cluster B types aren't actually hard to see through once you've dealt with them a few times since they tend to follow fairly universal behavioural patterns.
Well said lads years of experience pays dividends , never work for the “easterners “ you won’t be paid
@@VooDooMaGicMan81 couldn’t agree more 👍🏴
Its people like YOU that keeps my hope in humanity, there are so many cowboys out there it makes a refreshing change to listen and watch a true trades man at work, hope you'll carry on with your vid's no matter what work your doing.... As with your customer he'll find a cowboy soon enough ..lol.
Thanks for understanding and yeh keep it real I’m not blowing smoke up anyones arse 👍🏴
I feel for you mate ,I'm a kitchen fitter, since youtube everyone thinks they can fit one until u see the fucking mess
Just pay the tradesman and leave him to it and bring coffee 👍🏴
Building surveyors say bricklayers are brain dead joiners, probably right as well. This guys been doing it for 30 years, does that mean what he’s doing wrong now, he has been doing wrong for thirty years, bless him
They always amaze me these lot. Tell you how the job should be done, then why aren't they doing it. Had it years ago with a know-all, left him the materials which he'd paid for to get on with it himself.
On rare occasions, to save time, a customer might do a simple measurement while I am not there and need to pick up a replacement part. It’s always a terrible idea and I have to remind myself that customers actually don’t know how to properly even read a tape measure or even know how to use one. Lesson learned. I would have walked away from that customer too.
My favorite lately is seeing people post on social media looking for a trades person to complete a job and have them state exactly how long it will take and exactly how much they will pay. THOSE are customers to avoid at all costs.
Totally agree on the customer using a tape measurement yeh pass in that I’ll do it myself thanks and any customer posting on social media and saying only 2 days work is in dream land 👍🏴
I was in America for 3 weeks in December . I was in this masonry supply yard and they had this funny flyer pinned to the wall. Masons hourly rate , 100 dollars minimum . If you watch , 150 dollars an hour . If you help ,175 dollars an hour . If you worked on it first, 200 dollars an hour . If you tell me how to do it ,250 an hour . If you mention you saw it on the internet, 300 dollars an hour . Obviously pointed at the type of dipstick you encountered 😂. Ya they’d drain the life out of you them clients .
I just had this feeling from the start of the bla bla bla I knew he was full of shit 👍🏴
Nice I Will remember this
I want 1 of them signs 😂
It's the tossers who can talk all day about their dull life and have the audacity to tell you how to do your job even if they are not a tradesmen!
100% correct mate, these are the things that people generally don’t take into account if they’re not self employed. The two worst things in my opinion are dealing with (some) potential customers, who turn out to be absolute fucking idiots who haven’t a clue but still try and insist on something that’s complete bollocks. The second is employing people, good if you have the right people, dreadful if you have the wrong ones. You did the right thing and walked away, it would have led to a disaster sooner or later. I recently did similar when a potential customer turned nasty after I insisted on a deeper foundation for a retaining wall as the existing wasn’t fit for purpose. I don’t think he expected me to just chop it from my workload so he tried to tell me how to do the job and got a bit cheeky. I’ve got plenty good customers who let me get on and pay me without problems so I didn’t need that. I imagine you’re pretty much the same. You can’t please everyone, especially when they’re like the guy you just described.
All very similar instances I’ve been through over time and I just get fed up with it people talking complete bollocks really pisses me off I’m glad I’m not taking on big projects anymore as some times it might take me days to do the quote so the less time spent with the customer the better.
Good luck in the future teddy charge more do less 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping cheers mate and thank you, charge more do less is the best tactic, charging more tends to get rid of the majority of boneheads and let’s you concentrate on serious customers. When you’re doing decent types of work for good customers it’s well worth the time 👍👍
It does my head in when the customer says "it's just a simple job.... shouldn't take you long", they're usually pen pushers.
He didn’t have a clue from the start bloody fool 👍🏴
2 years ago. My customer insisted on being the labourer. To save costs. I agreed.
He turned up in flip flops with a wheelbarrow that had a flat tyre.
Complete tosser
Hahaha 😂😂😂
I’m so not going to miss all this shit I’ve had a guts full 👍🏴
Don't worry about it, I've done this a few times, even had a lady who accused me of being an hour late despite me arriving 5 mins early the date and time agreed by text message and confirmed by her.
If they are cranky from the start they will be murder to actually work for and not worth it.
Yeh totally agree my asshole radar was spot on this time 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping 🤣😂🤣
@@tidybrickslandscaping thats why i try and avoid working for the public ive looked at a few jobs for arseholes and know it alls
Spot on 👍
Bloody hell i once got told I was on more per hr than her hubby after she worked it out when I given her my quote asked how long I would take for a break and what time I start and finish, you can imagine my reply 😊 the last word ended in off
LoL ! have you had the ' All you got to do is ' yet ?? yes just do the walk away ..........
Don’t let them get you down brother! And thank you very much for 100s of hours of excellent, informative, educational and most important-very entertaining videos!!!
Much appreciated thanks for watching 👍🏴
Normal customers you go the extra mile for. When you get these tossers, tell them you can recommend a good doctor to help them, as you wave goodbye. Much better to toughen up and have a day off.
I'm not in the same line of work as you,but we all meet people like this and end up regretting it when you let the money for work being the deciding factor.
Now I always trust my gut feeling about people and never look back .
Always trust your gut feeling if it don’t feel right walk away as you’ll kick yourself otherwise 👍🏴 thx for watching
When I was on the trowel a customer kept questioning my technique .I simply handed him the trowel and asked him to teach me how to do it .He didn't bother me after that .
Arh ha 😂 yeh take that sucker 👍🏴
If the spider censers are tingling then walk away. Value your worth and piece of mind.
You are VERY skilled - Change trades? Anything outside is just not respected or valued. Plus the rain keeps falling. I know, I'm a landscaper. Hopefully I'll be able to change my fortunes soon too :) Best of luck mate.
There is a change coming soon I have a cunning plan 👍🏴
I have done that a few times myself ,I can tell you from experience if you had done the job you would have bitterly regretted it, also when as the saying goes cry misfortune (are you sure it won’t break crack fall down) run away as fast as you can if you don’t I can guarantee that will be one job that will break your heart ,you’ll soon get over you loss GOOD LUCK
I’m so over it already he had no chance 👍🏴
Only two things worse than the customer who tells you how to do your job:
1. The customer who permanently hangs over your shoulder, asking you what you're doing & why!
2. The customer who doesn't pay!!!
You 100% did the right thing in walking away - you know what you do, how & why!
If you'd done the job, likely they'd have found something to complain about!
Have a day off and schedule in/look for another job to fill the time lost on this one.
Its all about life/work balance, not work/life balance! Your sanity & happiness is priority and anyone who disagrees is welcome to fuck off!!!
Nicely done mate! 👌🏼😁
Years ago, I could’ve took the stress now no way customers like that fuck right off 👍🏴
1 and 2 normally the same customer.
Feeling this. I’m a self-employed builder and my heart sinks when I hear the words “It should be easy…” However, I recently employed some ‘professionals’ to do some work for me on my own place (it wasn’t something I had the resources or the time for) and I have to say, there are some situations when “I’ve been doing this 30 years” means “I’ve been ballsing it up for 30 years”. The state of the guys’ work was abominable but they were adamant that they were doing it right…they only twigged after a week that I was a builder from the questions that I was asking😄
Swings and roundabouts 👍🏴
Too right, it’s just people innit!
@@squintclinic there’s to many wonabees in the building game it’s a bloody gamble every time 👍🏴
Or the words cheap as possible 😂
@mikehardman8906 or the other one "whats your best possible price"!
People don’t realise how hard it is doing your own thing for a living. Mentally tough at times, you just want to get away from it all but can’t. My favourite thought these days is tomorrow is a new day’ and tomorrow is
You did the right thing. At the end of the day it would have been your name on the job and when the wall started to go walkabout in years to come it would have been all your fault. Doing a job like that is not worth the hassle.
I always need the money, but not that badly 👍🏴
Im a flooring contractor, if the builder says he has latexed the floor i don't bother because i know 99.9% its crap.
Always annoying to deal with super entitled customers who think they know best. I feel your pain
Glad you agree with me 👍🏴
Right there with you, pal.
Here here,... Well said that man. We've all met them, many a time.
Top work, top professional. Love your work 👌👍
Much appreciated 👍🏴
I sympathise. I'm sorry that you've lost time and money on this fool.
Fair play mate... I also hate it when you spend hours writing up a quote, send it off and it's not even acknowledged. It's not fucking hard to thank someone.
Horrible memories of writing quotes up for time wasters it really used to piss me off 👍🏴
Good on you Scott. You've earned the right to not put up with crap..happier and easier times ahead .👍
I look forward to seeing them .
You and me both! 👍🏴
How topical at the moment for me, I've stuck on a job that I should have walked away from. I'm two weeks in and sort of feel obliged to carry on to finish, but they lied about everything and it's amazing that the house is even still standing with how bad the building work is. You've done the right thing, otherwise you could be like me at the moment, everything in my body hurts and I can't see a decent way through the work :(
If you’ve already started just suck it up and keep calm 👍🏴
Character building
love it ,,,, i knocked on the door, the husband shouts up the stairs margaret the building chappie is here Usain bolt would be hard pressed to catch me getting out of there....
It’s always the women you have to deal with the men just pay for it. 👍🏴
Trust your senses..... You did the right thing . 🏴
Yeh right I’m off later 👋👍🏴
They usually say they want you there the following morning and the job finished by yesterday! 😂
Pretty much! 👍🏴
I don't blame you Scott. What a hassle. The job would never be right for someone like that.
Yeh balls to that one 👍🏴
Fair play mate know exactly what you mean, I do all of my quotes on a Saturday and some quotes I go to are a complete waste of time, fair play for walking away
Cheers ben I’m glad I walked off 👍🏴
I think all tradesmen have been there, I looked around a 2 bedroom flat to redecorate the whole place, was full to the brim of furniture after about 40 mins walking around he asked for a 'ball park' figure I said that's not fair on either of us, he then preceded to tell me how much he thought the job was worth, well below what I had in my head, I nodded walked out and never got in touch again, he was a solicitor!! if he had said what he wanted to pay at the start I would have just walked off
Yeh best just to walk away if you get that feeling there wasting your time, I’m certainly not going to miss it 👍🏴
Solicitors as a whole are a nightmare tightwads.Always walked from them.
The key is to spot the problem early so you can walk away before wasting any time and labour.
Well said mate I feel the same I’ve had enough be on my knees 👍
2023 I’m not taking any shit 👍🏴
The general public can be horrible to deal with. It’s difficult when you are the guy basically dealing with all aspects from pricing jobs, trying to explain what you know to someone that usually knows nothing, to doing the work. It’s basically all a bit much. You are far from alone on this! Good to vent your frustrations from time to time!
I’m glad it happened just to clear my mind 👍🏴
I was an irrigation contractor in Florida. After I had explained everything to a customer, some then question what I had said. I would just say, “I’m not sure why you called me, if you know how to do it.”
And this was a typical example of the same 👍🏴
👍good for you iam at the same stage in my working life and so many customers are full of 💩the classic line is “I got a little job for you it won’t take you long” what the hell do they know 😄
He was a classic example yeh mate jog on 👍🏴
sorry mate
been there, done that
for every shit contractor there are thousands of shit customers...especially now with the internet
Good man.
People always make the mistake of thinking the self employed are their own boss. Not true but you do get to chose your boss on a regular basis.
Choosing wisely is the ticket. Never be afraid to walk on.
Fair Play to you. You speak the truth and don't take any nonsense. Might not be everyone's cup of of tea but I Think your videos are SO REFRESHINGLY HONEST!!!! I typed that in capitals intentionally. And it's your honesty that makes you great.
Looking forward to more tidy bricks videos. Keep up the good work.👍👍👌👌
Thanks JC glad you agree with my HONEST OPINION got to keep it real 👍🏴
I totally agree with u does my head in to
It's the worst they don't know what they want but know how to do it.
Nothing changes Scot. I'm exactly the same. Small cash jobs for weekends etc. They are usually 90% like that. Don't envy you! Stick to what your gut tells you.
My gut feeling was right on point 👍🏴
I've had customers put in step foundations for me and I have never had one that is right - never again. I don't blame you for wanting the easier work, in-between customers stressing me out and jobs not going to plan sometimes I've had enough and it's so hard to find decent people to help. I have the skills but feel sometimes I just don't know what direction to go in with work!
I here you Sam trying to find the staff is a nightmare that’s why I’ve always kept it to a minimum me and a family member or someone else I can’t handle the stress fcuk that life’s hard enough 👍🏴
I would have said “ Al si thi “ after 10 seconds!!!! So it’s minus the crap then.
I was to busy being in a trance 🤪👍🏴
totally agree, you done the right thing here, if you was desparate for the work you would have built on his foundations, months later when wall starts cracking, he would have said its all your doing!!!!! made your name shit every where!! chin up mate, same boat as you, most times dread meeting new clients.
I really don’t like looking at jobs anymore my hearts not in it 👍🏴
Sorry to hear about your dreadful experience. This is why my dad eventually quit as a self employed builder… it seemed that every customer knew all about construction (the downside of instructional videos on UA-cam).
However, thanks to your instructional videos, I now have a super slate patio.
All the best and every success to you.
Some customers can be a pain but I’m glad these videos have helped you out 👍🏴
Been there mate. People want everything for nothing these days, and don't listen to anything you have to say. . Love it that you fucked off and left it. Can't be doing with any of that stuff myself.
Best wishes to you. Love your work.
I’m not taking any shit anymore if I get that feeling then get ready to fcuk off sharpish 👍🏴
It's good to have a rant - get it off your chest!
The next customer will be a good'n, endless supply of tea and biscuits and full of praise for your work!
New rant filmed today 👍🏴
Bet he would have argued about the price too. You're well out of it.
Always good to have a rant and get it out your system mate👍🏻
Absolutely love a rant 👍🏴
Hi Scott, There’s good customers and bad customers , the bad ones can 🤬, 👍🏻
I agree a price and let people get on with it,on the flip side I've had some bodger's and had to have work done again at my expense so I'm a bit wary now.
I’ve been there and done that got the T-shirt. I now I’ll try and work smarter not harder like you my back my knees my hands are knackered they won’t pay for the experience just want a cheap job which I will not do so just walk away. I can 9 times out of 10 suss out a customer out within 10 minutes, or
even just over the phone generally this is why I only work for people who have recommended me
I’d prefer to work for only my UA-cam followers as they know what to expect 👍🏴
I'm the same way, just tired of people tell you how to do the job, but they won't do it them self
He said he would do it himself if he had a mixer
My message to him is go hire one 👍🏴

I am in the middle of a refurb and extension dealing with exactly that type of customer… been 4 weeks of hell.

Well, I hope you finish the job soon as you can without any issues 👍🏴
Good for you walking away..
Good gut !!
Tidy ! Tidy ! Tidy !
Well done Scott 👏...been there aswell ....the tv makes programmes about builder's from hell...always wondered why they never made programmes about customer's from hell...look forward to your next 1
Thanks Bill and yeh it’s a two way street us and them 👍🏴
Ive said the same for years and years mate
Yiddo, correct👍 many tv programs criticising the workman but fairly often you get the customer from hell... same as "Rogue Landords" program, ive met more scummy sub standard tenants than landords.
An armchair expert, the worlds full of em.
And they can all bugger off 👍🏴
Some really stupid people about these days, good to hear your rant.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏴
My game was Curtains and Blind gotta job in Cork Ireland there 2 days Dressed the curtains got taxi to airport Stricted instructions to the Housekeeper DO NOT pull the Curtains for at least 3 Days ( That’s how I was taught 50 years ago by the old school and they go back into the pleats / folds you leave them in ) as the Taxi pulled away I looked back at my work and the Housekeeper was Pulling the curtains
This 2pm in the afternoon,, SO got home and as I expected The phone was ringing like mad ,,It was the owner telling me what a crap job I’d left the curtains all creased,,She wasn’t happy ,,So I explained what I’d seen the housekeeper doing after I’d explained
Outcome was a Free trip to Cork a couple of days later for £600 cash and some extra duty free along with the cheque for the original Job ,,,SO old timers like us who do a PROPER Job DO KNOW what we are talking about,,Good on You ,,Budgie
Thanks for the story budgie it was a good read 👍🏴
A home owner/tradesman relationship is very different to an employer/employee relationship, the tradesman is more aware of this than the home owner most of the time.
Rant away as we all get them, absolutely nothing worse than a blinking know-it-all. I had the unfortunate experience of walking off a job after a full days work. Marked it do as experience and never looked back! Lost a few £££ but gained years of my life back because If I stayed with the the utter Banker for another shift I would be pulling time in a 6x6 cell. I priced the job when the wife was there and the hubby was nowhere to be seen. That was years ago and now if I even get a hint of shite the price goes through the roof so I do not get the job. chin up Scott 👍🏻
It’s tough measuring up prices and people these days it’s hard to get it all right but when you get the feeling I don’t like the sound of this then it’s time to leave and I’m glad I did 👍🏴
Better off finding out now rather than when it comes to getting paid! I pity the guy who actually ends up doing work for this customer.
He probably would off paid by cheque too 👍🏴
I do EICR testing and Pat Testing get the odd Jobs worth, i had a cusctomer tell me how many tests each site how long it would take and it would take 2 people. jobs like that are to much agro be call back after call back. Those sort of customers always make more demands up as you go along. Did the right thing
My senses were working overtime that day I could feel it in the air you’re totally right 👍🏴
Video made me laugh , ‘RANT OVER ‘ .. excellent.
You filmed another rant today 👍🏴
Don't blame you for walking off, some plumbing jobs I've gone to the customer is telling me how I should do it so I say carry on then mate. It's usually blokes who work in an office. I'm no good on a computer 😂 if they're a pain at the start then get the hell out of there.

Life's to short....
I wanted to say as I was leaving, do it yourself then? Coz I’m off 👍🏴
It’s mad I’m the same as I’ve got older I just won’t put up with people. The best one is it will only take you a couple of hours that makes me laugh . So now if I get some telling me how to do it just jog them on
Spot on with your get up and go
I have been in similar scenarios
I am a chippy dealing with the public every day you learn to sus them out.
The good customers outweigh the bad by a big percentage. I am nearly 67 but still like the job as long as my health is OK I will carry on.sorry to go on
After years of working with customers your gut feeling becomes a important tool figuring out shall I or shall I not 👍🏴
I can relate to this so much! Makes you can’t be arsed going to work when you have to deal with dumplings on a regular basis. Only thing that keeps you going is odd nice people! Why is it there’s so many experts trying to tell you what to do in your own job. If your that much of a expert do it yourself!
Well said let the dumpling do it himself 😂👍🏴
Ha Ha Ha . Well done mate love it, I think we have all been there.

As a Plumber/Gas Engineer now retired through choice , I used to get customers like this . One was a Woman who wanted a shower tray and screen fitted , where the Screen would be half over the Bathroom Window . I said that would let the Water land onto the window surface , she said she "Didn't care " Another was an Ethnic minority , who rented out a Flat and had a problem with the Boiler not working , I gave him my Diagnostic Charge , and he said , "Do I have to pay if there is nothing wrong " I said , "If there is nothing wrong with the Boiler why are you phoning me ?
