    Mate, it sounds like you did the right thing at th3 right time. That job would have just got worse and worse as he would have continuously questioned what you were doing and why. I know it was a paying job but your mental health is worth much more, rather than stress about how shit the job was just focus on the bullet you have avoided and concentrate on something more positive.

      Often your experience is picking up on personality disorders of these potential customers. Cluster B types aren't actually hard to see through once you've dealt with them a few times since they tend to follow fairly universal behavioural patterns.

    On rare occasions, to save time, a customer might do a simple measurement while I am not there and need to pick up a replacement part. It’s always a terrible idea and I have to remind myself that customers actually don’t know how to properly even read a tape measure or even know how to use one. Lesson learned. I would have walked away from that customer too.
    My favorite lately is seeing people post on social media looking for a trades person to complete a job and have them state exactly how long it will take and exactly how much they will pay. THOSE are customers to avoid at all costs.

    I was in America for 3 weeks in December . I was in this masonry supply yard and they had this funny flyer pinned to the wall. Masons hourly rate , 100 dollars minimum . If you watch , 150 dollars an hour . If you help ,175 dollars an hour . If you worked on it first, 200 dollars an hour . If you tell me how to do it ,250 an hour . If you mention you saw it on the internet, 300 dollars an hour . Obviously pointed at the type of dipstick you encountered 😂. Ya they’d drain the life out of you them clients .

    100% correct mate, these are the things that people generally don’t take into account if they’re not self employed. The two worst things in my opinion are dealing with (some) potential customers, who turn out to be absolute fucking idiots who haven’t a clue but still try and insist on something that’s complete bollocks. The second is employing people, good if you have the right people, dreadful if you have the wrong ones. You did the right thing and walked away, it would have led to a disaster sooner or later. I recently did similar when a potential customer turned nasty after I insisted on a deeper foundation for a retaining wall as the existing wasn’t fit for purpose. I don’t think he expected me to just chop it from my workload so he tried to tell me how to do the job and got a bit cheeky. I’ve got plenty good customers who let me get on and pay me without problems so I didn’t need that. I imagine you’re pretty much the same. You can’t please everyone, especially when they’re like the guy you just described.

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  Рік тому +2

      All very similar instances I’ve been through over time and I just get fed up with it people talking complete bollocks really pisses me off I’m glad I’m not taking on big projects anymore as some times it might take me days to do the quote so the less time spent with the customer the better.

    Only two things worse than the customer who tells you how to do your job:
    1. The customer who permanently hangs over your shoulder, asking you what you're doing & why!
    2. The customer who doesn't pay!!!
    You 100% did the right thing in walking away - you know what you do, how & why!
    If you'd done the job, likely they'd have found something to complain about!
    Have a day off and schedule in/look for another job to fill the time lost on this one.

I’m a self-employed builder and my heart sinks when I hear the words “It should be easy…” However, I recently employed some ‘professionals’ to do some work for me on my own place (it wasn’t something I had the resources or the time for) and I have to say, there are some situations when “I’ve been doing this 30 years” means “I’ve been ballsing it up for 30 years”. My game was Curtains and Blind gotta job in Cork Ireland there 2 days Dressed the curtains got taxi to airport Stricted instructions to the Housekeeper DO NOT pull the Curtains for at least 3 Days ( That’s how I was taught 50 years ago by the old school and they go back into the pleats / folds you leave them in ) as the Taxi pulled away I looked back at my work and the Housekeeper was Pulling the curtains
    This 2pm in the afternoon,, SO got home and as I expected The phone was ringing like mad ,,It was the owner telling me what a crap job I’d left the curtains all creased,,She wasn’t happy ,,So I explained what I’d seen the housekeeper doing after I’d explained
    Outcome was a Free trip to Cork a couple of days later for £600 cash and some extra duty free along with the cheque for the original Job ,,,SO old timers like us who do a PROPER Job DO KNOW what we are talking about,,Good on You ,,Budgie

    Rant away as we all get them, absolutely nothing worse than a blinking know-it-all. I had the unfortunate experience of walking off a job after a full days work. Marked it do as experience and never looked back! Lost a few £££ but gained years of my life back because If I stayed with the the utter Banker for another shift I would be pulling time in a 6x6 cell. I priced the job when the wife was there and the hubby was nowhere to be seen. That was years ago and now if I even get a hint of shite the price goes through the roof so I do not get the job. chin up Scott 👍🏻

One was a Woman who wanted a shower tray and screen fitted , where the Screen would be half over the Bathroom Window . I said that would let the Water land onto the window surface , she said she "Didn't care " Another was an Ethnic minority , who rented out a Flat and had a problem with the Boiler not working , I gave him my Diagnostic Charge , and he said , "Do I have to pay if there is nothing wrong " I said , "If there is nothing wrong with the Boiler why are you phoning me ?
