The calculations are the same for steel or timber in terms of cutting the rafters. Regarding sizing the members and layout spacing, try consulting span tables. I typically use the IRC (International Residential Code) but you can find others on the internet. Personally, I try to use 24" o.c. layout (as long as span allows) for cost savings but more conservative architects prefer 16" o.c. which provides more nailing surface for sheetrock.

A very deep and expensive program however, if you are a teacher or student you may be able to buy it at a substantially reduced price as I did (visit www.creation engine.com). Please note that the rafters used in the video are not part of the in the box "families". I spent a yuge amount of time creating a suite of parametric rafters in preparation for the video.
