Jamie can’t say he’s adopted. Your dads his double!
I legit did a double take ...
Don't tell Eric, he's adopted!
My first thought
Kneepad is not for old people; it is for wise people....
100%, my knees and back are shot because I never used knee protection for over 15 years. Now can't go without wearing kneepads.
I couldn't agree more! I use a knee board anytime I can. Old knees and old backs struggle getting back up these days 😅
The best tool that I have are my Rexbeti knee pads.
Ha. Paving stone/retaining wall man here: I thought the same thing! Wisdom for the people! 😂
Same here kneepads from an early age,by the time you realise it’s to late
Pro Tip: Have the company buy everyone the same tape measure for consistency. You guys have great stuff. Thanks.
Most times it's just that one tape has a damaged hook. Either the hook is bent from a drop or it's not sliding like it should from being dragged through mud/stucco etc. If it's exactly 1/16 then it's probably that one of the hooks isn't sliding as that's the thickness of the hook that the slide is supposed to take up.
For those who don't know the hook on your tape measure is supposed to slide back and forth 1/16 to account for the thickness of the hook material when taking measurements either pulling or pushing (outside vs inside measurement).
You are correct...PLUS...if the hook is bent, you can (carefully) bend it back.@@shibby4389
And it doesn't matter what kind of tape it is as long as the brand is Stanley and the product is FatMax.
All tape measures should be designed according to the same requirements of accuracy, which should eliminate such things. Besides that people have a different taste. I use a compact 8m tape, while all the other guys use a 5m tape. I've had plenty of different tapes, and find mine to the be the best I've tried so far, and would not like to use a different one.
My first day on the job 35 years ago the Boss asked to see my tape measure. I gave it to him and he threw it into the dumpster and handed me a new one just like his and said everyone needs to be on the same page so all the measurements are the same. I never forgot that lesson.
Yeah, I'd remember an asshole who threw away a perfectly good tape, too.
@@idontthinkso666 That mattered for about 5 minutes until someone dropped their tape and bent the hook...that's the main culprit in not matching up..
I think it’s time we start having Arlo rate power tools. If it can hold up to Arlo, then it’s made to last!
Hey Eric, Jamie and crew. I am always amazed (and disappointed) how fast 25 minutes or so goes by watching you guys. Real people doing real work. Hats off to Johno at 18:30 for brilliant solution to the deck spacing issue. Also a big pat on the back to Eric for anticipating a possible spacing problem. Blessing of the season to youall. Cheers from Canada.
I know. Should make at least 45 min vids. It's like as soon as you start enjoying the video, it's over. Come on Jamie, I'm sure you have lots of footage
The copper end caps were a great touch and worth the money. And using the head of the nail as a retainer was also a great idea. The deck looks awesome. Dividing the border pieces was the ideal solution. Great job, guys.
Thanks!!
I love to watch Arlo rip finish boards with a skil saw. No need for anything fancy when you have cut the amount of lineal footage that man has. Thanks for the great show, it's weird as a pro carpenter to come home after wearing tool bags all day and watch other people do the same. But I've learned a lot and been entertained all in the same sitting... Feels like watching New Yankee Workshop with my dad as a kid....
Love the color of the house as well as the decking. Awesome job on the decking. Fantastic seeing your Dad by the way. Thanks!
This book is awesome if you're thinking of making some cool stuff for your garden. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- It has tons of plans for all kinds of things, like storage sheds, picnic tables, single garage plans, dog kennels, and garden swings. I'm hooked on this book forever. Thanks, Ryan! There's so much content in these Shed Plans. It's amazing! For long-term service, it seems like it's worth spending a bit more money. Ryan, you're so generous to share all this info with us, and at such a low price.
That decking is beautiful, you guys go above and beyond!
Plastic deck material is murder on saws. The plastic dust gets sucked into every vent on the saw and then melts to hot stuff like the motor. I've personally killed two ryobis, on DeWalt and one Hitachi. It wasn't til I took one apart that I knew what was happening.
Pretty much always measure everything from the '1' for anything I need to be truly accurate.
Also, I use laser measurers for a lot of things. *Why don't I ever see your crew using laser measurers?*
Even laser measuring systems have a +/- degree of accuracy similar to a tape.
This decking is over the top fellas! By the way, Jamie’s a legend because he’s got a pencil over his ear😊
Ya'll should do a calendar and do some fun photos of you guys, and sell on your merch website.
Càn we vote on who gets naked😂😂😂
12 months of Jamie.😊
Nice deck I like it looks real wood ,,Merry Xmas guys and a Happy New Year stay safe and enjoy your time with Family cheers from Australia 🙏❤️😁👍🦘🇺🇸🍺
Those copper rafter caps really, really, really look awesome installed!
Eric and Jaime, I’m so happy to see you have your dad on the set, it truly warms my heart! He taught you so much in the mysteries of homebuilding, and yet you’ve commented on the pain you often endured. I’d love to see him more often for many reasons, and it’s truly incredible how similar Jaime is with dad!
I've been watching these guys for a few years now and it was only this particular morning I realised how much Jaime looks like his father.
Been following you guys for a few years now. I respect the hell out of you guys. Never change. Jamie your a legend.
Jamie just has to look at his dad to know what he will look like when he is older
Pro tip, stick the hand warmers in a sweat band on your wrist . It'll keep the blood going into your hands warm .
Yeah, we always calibrate our tapes before starting some finish work like that decking. We try to use the same brand of tapes and replace them often.
That decking looks amazing. Great job like always. You guys are hysterical. Been watching for a while. Why doesn’t JohnO like to talk?
Apparently zip tape is the love child of duct tape and flex tape.
Jaimie looks so much like your Dad wow.
Merry Christmas Perkins crew and the best New Year 🌲🌲🌲🌲
The tape gets out of correctness in measurement from letting the tape rush back in after using it.The tab at the end gets bent over and there's your sixteenth of an inch.I always keep my thumb on the tape as it comes back in and slow it as it reaches the end to avoid the slam.
That decking is simply AWESOME!!!
The copper end caps are gorgeous! Love watching your channel. I learn alot plus get alot of laughs! I'm the 10% of those women that watch, lol!
I would hire a hands on contractor 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 way before a non-hands on contractor!
I watch all your videos and this is the first time I’ve seen your dad on site. It’s like looking at an older version of Jaime.
He is in several videos. Your statement is untrue, or your brain is defective.
Zip tape, the 21st century duct tape.
hahahhahah
I thought I liked that color when it was going on, not sure I like now? But it doesn't matter what I think. LOL!!
The funny thing is in Ohio there’s no such thing as a “contractors license” for residential building. The only trades that are licensed are plumbing, electrical and HVAC but good luck trying to find an inspector if it even required to have one.
Look at the end of your tape.
The angled bit usually moves depending on whether you're pulling the tape or butting it against something.
There may be an issue with one of yours.
Keep up the good work!!
Or they bend if you drop them on a hart surface. Been there, done that.
That's what I'm talking about with maybe there is an issue.
Best practice is to use the same tape that was measured with to measure the material. That way it doesn't matter if you have the 'wrong' measurement because the same wrong measurement will be 'correct'. This isn't very efficient though, soooo.
@@GeekBatman This will work until you order things at a specific measurement.
@@DeCSSData I guess that's when you find the measuring tape that measures true haha
That's why you burn a 1" being the cut guy so you don't ever have that problem!
Looking good fellas! Happy B-day, Eric!
set your taps to a steel ruler say the longer one you have over 4 ft we have to do that at work to see if taps are good we found 5 out 10 were no good, we work in mm so needs to be right on ,,,
You don't need a yacht, when you have a big deck............. Y'all take care.
Jami is a sub contractor treasure. A hands on quality control professional.
Brass caps are next level, great job, Christmas greetings from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Is Johnathan's last name Klassen? My maiden name is Klassen and my dad and brothers name is John.
On my crew I required all tape measures had to be the same manufacturer, we always used Stanley.
love the copper drip caps. If you were to do them again, you could make the kick out on the bottom of the flashing a little longer, then doubled over and have it come back to the bottom of the rafter where you could nail it, just to keep wind from maybe pulling on them. Awesome detail.
We recently had a contractor in to zush up our school's bathrooms, the man was not on the premises even ONCE while his team worked. A two-week contract became a three-break contract. On-site presence is super important, and why I enjoy your videos so much.
As for people not paying: that is one of the reasons my brother is hesitant to return to contracting work.
There are some guys who make their living by not paying their subbies for a year or two. They send some families to the wall but they just don't care, there's plenty more fish in the sea. If it gets too bad, they declare bankruptcy and are working the next week under a new name. I know one guy who had received serious death threats but no, just keeps ripping people off.
@@Belly-u2w Seems what you and the customers need is a asshole-database. Just take a look before contracting who is not to trust! In Europe such thing would not be allowed, but in the US I think it would be possible?
Lovely decking surprised you didn’t use deck tape? Pretty sure you’ve used it before in the past
The decking looks amazing with the colour of the house. Great choices.
Pro tip: When sliding the clips in from the end isn't a possibility, cut a 1" or so notch through the bottom lip of the grooved edge, and slip them in from the bottom. You will be surprised how often this helps when you've 'painted' yourself into an impossible spot with getting clips into a deck board.
Great Tip!
Does Jamie have an earring hole? Lets see a picture of him with earrings on.
that copper looks awesome guys; Jaime was right. And I have purchased copper thumbtacks in the past, which would be great with the lexel and the zip tape. But I think they will stick for 50 years…. Good job.
That problem with the tape measure? Is it because a fractional difference in the spacing of the marking or is it because the play in the hook?
I used Superior Wall on my custom home and I could not recommend it more. It has been great, two guys installed it all in one day.
Always check the end of a measuring tape to see if it is bent
The copper details look really cool 🎉
Jaime, you look and talk and act like your father!
Love the copper ends but when it turns green, as copper does, it would drive me nuts 🥜 i would be up a very tall ladder with some braso 😂
Seeing your dad and thinking ohh that's Jamie,it's like they are twins..
Thank you please read Romans10:9-13❤
Wow! I figured the BS and Beer was this weeks episode. Hats off to you Erik for staying on your schedule.
With regards to Jaime being a hands-on contractor. It actually helps your insurance rates. I’ve heard many insurance companies will not insure “paper contractors”.
Merry Christmas to everyone on the PBB crew! As well Merry Christmas to you Ramelle. I’m sure this project is bitter-sweet especially during the holidays. Your home is going to be beautiful.
In my humble opinion, this build is becoming the coolest design build yet. Could be all the porch space and different exterior surface materials but whatever it is, it looks fantastic!! Eric, if you really want to get and stay healthy….its carnivore baby!
Thanks! It’s been great fun collaborating and getting upgrades to my build that exceed what I ever imagined!
@@ramellesmith1520You do have an excellent design going there (LOVE the color choices!). I’m extremely anxious to see what you got going for the inside! I’d even like to see your interior design/furniture choices. And yes - I’m totally jealous! (I hope to be building something very similar in a few short years)
I appreciate that you allow us to ride along with you on this endeavor! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
@@Tractorgal - thanks so much! I have numerous pieces of furniture that I hope will work. I do need a couch, I have some oak to have a table made for the dining room that I am trying to convince Jaime to do, guest bed and side tables and likely a comfy chair or two for a reading/view area. I have very eclectic tastes and pieces that I love and had for a while. Oh, and outdoor furniture of course.
I don’t know if Eric will do an after the build vid since it has nothing to do tips and tricks for building.
@@ramellesmith1520 - I don’t mean to be nosy, but I think like Craftsman style quarter-saw oak would fit that cabin appeal - if that’s what you like. Maybe we will get to see some before it’s totally completed. (I wasn’t sure how far behind the PBB videos were) Thanks for the answer! Appreciate it and the sharing of your experience building. 🥰
@@Tractorgal - they are currently almost a month behind. But should get a little closer to real time since subs are in for the next couple of weeks.
I’ll let you wait to see what flooring I have chosen! I wanted hardwood character maple which would have meant tile for the kitchen, baths and laundry area. Sadly, it seemed out of my price range 😿
Have to say: GREAT choice on the paint color of the house, I really like it, especially in combination with the color of the decking!
Arlo’s saw is still good - just open it up and clean the carbon off the switch contacts.
Question...out on the deck...the enclosed part will have screens...what about the deck itself it has holes/spaces where skeeters can get in!
The screen is to keep my cats contained. And it won’t be too buggy as the screen will help a lot. And the cats love to play with bugs!
Is this still a family channel? Toe-screwin', face-screwin' 🙃
I've run in to the tape measure issue before too. My guys would give me measurements and they kept being too tight. Turns out my tape was reading 3/16 longer than theirs. It can make for a very frustrating day.
Wow.. that’s bad
take 2 plier to bend the metal end of the tape , stop droping or bumping the end when storing or transporting, , easy fix dudes lol amen
calibration complete , also check first 12 to 24 inches seen 3/8 diference in printing ugh only oncce in 40 years
Stanley Black & Decker actually owns both DeWalt and Craftsman tool brands. They make both of those measuring tapes.
That decking looks beautiful!
Why didn't you tape/seal the top of the deck joists like you have in the past?
Guys please done use your hand as a hammer! You will be in pain once you get old!
Good looking decking product!
Deck is looking sweet
Whatever tape measure. All crew should have the same. Problem solved.
This was a cracker boys nice to see it coming together. And jaime dont give up the day job merry christmas to you and the family crack on
Many thanks for letting me build with you! ! Merry Christmas wishes to you all at Perkins and a brilliant 2024.
02:20 BOOM, brilliant cut and editing. Keep those coming. ;)
That deck color looks GREAT
The deck is top notch
So excited for the front wall and roof.
Where's the joist tape? U guys have put it on before!
I too want to hear Jamie singing and playing guitar.
I stopped a leak in the flat part of my house roof with Zip stretch tape. 😀
When I was in construction, I used Lufkin tapes..Best ever.
Ones american, ones from China, China is on the metric system.
I think we need a Perkins Builder Brothers bloopers
How much is that house your doing now?
Jamie: "I love being hands on!"
Me: "Well, it's more of a hand and a half..."
Girlfriend: "HONEY!"
Tajima makes my favourite small utility knife
When are we going to see Jaime singing?
Woohoo! Beautiful decking ❤
She is gd with colours. It looks awesome.well done guys.
Thank you for your kind words!
15:21 Does telling him to stop talking ever work?
Maybe you get this all the time, but you should do more videos with your pops. I think that would be awesome to see him help out or offer advice on camera.
Anyway, keep up the great work. I’ve been a viewer for four years now, and you are hands down my favorite building channel…even better than TOH. Thanks!
Have y’all considered using joist tape on the top of all of the structural members?
I noticed some zip tape at the end of video on one of the beams but not the rest.
I just replaced the decking on my 20+ year old deck with new composite and used joist tape on everything. The amount of dirt and moisture that ends up between beam members and joist ends is surprising and I like that it helps seal around screws, especially hidden fasteners that are in the exposed space between deck boards. I’m in Canada and snow means moisture lingers longer during freeze/thaw cycles.
Great vid as always. Love watching you guys!
I dont understand how they can regulate the type of license based upon the cost of a project.
I mean you either need a license or you dont, regardless of the project cost.
Here in Florida, the licenses are in 3 categories.
The lowest level is called a ( residential builder ) license.
It allows for building all residential projects up to a 3 story building.
Next is the ( building contractor ) level of license.
That allows for all types of residential, plus multi family, plus some types of commercial.
Finally there is the ( general contractor ) license, which would cover everything from residential to high rise buildings and building things like bridges.
Now, the fact is that on the job knowledge is not a requirement for getting a license.
Experience is however. lol
It is an open book test, and you will not pass unless you have the books and have studied them. regardless of your level of on the job experience.
Figure on a cost of about $2000 for the books for the basic license.
If you prepare you will pass, if you dont, you wont, that simple.
Updates for license holders are required every 2 years, and there is a cost for doing that as well.
Fact is that there are quite a few people running businesses who themselves arent licensed.
They simply pay someone who is licensed to be the license holder for that business.
None of this has any bearing whatsoever on protecting homeowners from unscrupulous contractors.
Nor does it protect contractors from unscrupulous customers.
Remember one thing as a contractor.
Real estate is the land the home is built on.
It is not the home itself, that is simply an improvement to the land. ( the real estate ).
When building homes on real estate owned by the customer, you are very vulnerable for not being paid in full for the project.
Lien laws will vary from state to state, as a general rule they are worth very little as for helping a contractor collect money rightfully due.
There is only one secure method, hold a mortgage on the property for the contract amount, signed at the time the contract is signed.
It can be unrecorded untill such time as it need be.
Ultimately, you will get paid, along with interest on the unpaid portion.
Remember what often happens to good builders who were also very nice guys.
Talk to your attorney about it.
You guys are to me the only actual contractors. The other companies don’t build they sub. To me subbing out everything just makes you a salesman/ project manager. Not a builder. GCs show up in nice clothes, big trucks, and don’t know a thing about quality.
do you want the 1.5m builds - probably not but the reg 200k spec house or 400k yeah you do want - familiarity breeds contempt but with contracting you want that - enough can and will go wrong on almost every build you want things bog standard and country simple - labor is such a big part of the cost and bid process - you are already getting squeezed by rodriguez bros ins/roofing/drywall and landscaping so you need predictable schedules #grk #advantec #zip system
Metal wall is easy, you j channel bottoms & tops, & any windows if the windows don’t have built in J. Then you can tape the J. Then you put your metal on vertically the same as your roof. Put corners on just like regular siding. Screw lap side down or every rib your preference. Then boom done.
Hello Bulder Brothers, i stumbled across your youtube, watched all most all your content. then cam across Jay's way, the Ray &jay. i dont see any new content from you guys any more, am i missing something. only asking cause i loved/love your content and want to see more?? if you got time could you fill me in. thank you. you guys are fun to watch, informitive.

“Copper corrosion is the corrosion of materials made of copper or copper alloys. When exposed to the atmosphere, copper oxidizes, causing normally bright copper surfaces to tarnish. After a few years, this tarnish gradually changes to dark brown or black, and finally to green.”
