- "The Boys of Barr na Sráide" (the boys from the top of the street) is a lyric poem by Irish poet Sigerson Clifford. It was later set to music and has become a popular song. The singer is Donie Nolan from west Limerick. The poet grew up partly in the town of Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland, which is the locale for the song. The lyrics mention the folk tradition of boys "hunting the wren" on St. Stephen's Day, as well as Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and emigration.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. My mother used to sing it.
A hard enough song to sing with backing but a lone voice, well that's just fantastic. My mother sang this by my uncle's graveside in Cill Mhearnóg cemetery beside the town last spring and it hasn't left my head since. The photos are remarkable.
