Catching Other Strings When Bending? Do This Instead! (Muting Technique Guitar Lesson)
In this lesson James gives you tips on how to stop other strings from sounding when bending strings on electric guitar.
This is a regular complaint from my electric guitar students. When you bend a not so far you have to bend the other strings out of the way then you end up catching them on the way back down. How do you stop it? It's actually in the notes you don't play as opposed to the ones you do…
When playing lead guitar you should be using the other fingers to stop the other strings resonating. I would recommend starting by using the tip of the index finger to just touch the string above the bent note just enough to stop it from sounding and then using the remaining flesh on that finger to mute the string below. For example if you were bending the 15th fret of the B string with your ring finger you would use the index to mute the G and high E Strings.
Simply being conscious of this Electric Guitar technique will get you half of the way there and you just need to make sure you are doing it all the time. It may feel like you have taken a step back but it will allow you to take 2 forwards.
