Just got Adam's Apple (2 months after this video) and you're so right. It is such a pleasant surprise to me, who also had not heard one note of it. It's awesome. Your reaction in this vid definitely got my attention. I'm beyond stoked that I pulled the trigger and bought it. The sound is sublime, the music is very accessible and both are skillfully rendered.

@@dank.6942 I know, that's so cool that we are essentially on the same page with regard to jazz. It's so great to making friends here on the channel, that's one aspect of this I love. I have no one locally I can share my passion with - no one I know locally is into audio or vinyl, but I've started to make connections a bit outside of the Miami area.

Thank you for the very nice report of your impressions - yours match with mine.
Acoustic Sounds 'We Get Requests' was a must for me, and it is no disappointment. SQ for me is a 8.5/10 (what is excellent!)
Unity was new to me, so I first listed to the digital version on Qobuz, before I decided to skip the vinyl.

@@ThePressingMatters I'm enjoying the journey of exploration just like you. The Wayne Shorter you mentioned was a surprise for me when I had a listen tonight. I find there's a lot of groupthink around the rerelease schedules which is hard to break free from or, rather, its hard to avoid listing the usual suspects. I really like the Tord Gustavsen Trio on ECM. Rare on vinyl, the album 'The other side' sounds great, very mellow if that's your thing. More avant garde, Roland Kirk's Bright Moments is on Pure Pleasure. Oh Yeah by Mingus on Speakers Corner. All the Sam Records stuff. Some japanese pressings by Kenny Dorham and Wynton Kelly that have been out of print at AP. Literally avant garde, Visions of Light by the Ismael ensemble, the comp We Out Here, and Kokoroko are all fine examples of contemporary London-based Jazz. Jim Hall's Concierto is lovely, not sure how the Pure Pleasure Reissue stacks up. Charlie Haden's Nocturne is recent if you like a little latin inflection. I could go on...!

    Nicely done for a quasi-jazz neophyte…
Adams Apple, The Soothsayer, Speak No Evil, Ju-Ju, Night Dreamer, all superlative stuff from Shorter!!
And whoever said ‘We Get Requests’ is on the edge of dinner/lounge jazz knows his stuff! Petersons other more straight-bop stuff on Verve and Mercury is better to me.

For those who like their Jazz infected ( in a good way) with keyboards. You should check out some old 1970s/80s Jazz Fusion albums by David Sancious. You've heard him before. He was on many Bruce Springsteen albums; remember the ending of Rosalita? He was Springsteen's keyboardist, his early stuff and then some of his later albums. He formed his own band David Sancious & Tone. I like Transformation and Just As I thought. I didn't warm to The Bridge & Forest Of Feelings on first listen, but they will get more chances. He's an amazing keyboard player and very well recorded with often amazing dynamics . He has a fairly lengthy Discography. Tomorrow I'll talk about another great Fusion keyboardist.

@@ThePressingMatters Springsteen is a musical genius and a lyrical genius too. I think I have gotten more philosophical insights listening to Springsteen's music than even Bob Dylan's. The album Born To Run is his mass market favorite, but his best albums are really The Wild The Innocent & The East Street Shuffle and Darkness On The Edge Of Town. I didn't know of I really liked Springsteen until I discovered the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album. On side 1 try Candy's Room, Racing In The Street, and The Promised Land. The tracks are one right after another in that order, in succession on side 1. I never knew a song like Racing In The Street, about the kind of guys who putz around with their cars could actually be so philosophically deep, and explore people's giving up on life and their dreams. When there were millions of people losing their good paying steel mill jobs and factory jobs back in the 1980s due to no limit on foreign imports, Springsteen questioned whether the government cared anything about people dreams, having a house and being able to support their families. He was a real spokesman for the common man, and with so many people losing their jobs, homes and their way of life, he donated lots of money to local meals for the poor places. He proves that your your Average Joe can be pretty deep.
A lot of it came from his youth and living on the street in some tough neighborhoods in Jersey. In fact that's what the entire The Wild The Innocent... album is all about. It's a true musical and lyric masterpiece about the common man.

@@ThePressingMatters Those 2 Springsteen albums are true classics in more ways than one. Not a bad track on either of them. The Wild The Innocent...
even has tonal variety as he uses many instruments, even a tuba on the track about Circus life. The album is so serious in places and he injects great humor in other places. It is also very well recorded. A Brazilian pressing showed up here in the states, and even though it wasn't in nearly as good a condition as my U.S. pressing, it sounded cleaner, with every note sounding purer. Less bright also. South American pressings must be great; some of them.

You might want to try the Chet Baker reissues on Sam or Craft. Also, Impex and Pure Pleasure do some nice AAA reissues. Bill Evans Trio 64 and Trio 65 are also very good in the Acoustic Sounds series. The OJC (Original Jazz Classics) series from Fantasy was AAA until about 15 years ago - in the 80s/90s, they pressed hundreds of Prestige, Riverside, Galaxy, and Contemporary titles that can still be found at reasonable;e prices and they sound outstanding.

I did pick up those two Trio albums and they are great - also have the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie, and portrait in Jazz. I enjoyed Eastern Sounds, Monks Dream and Mingus Ah Um One Steps. I like the Duke Ellington Indigos and the one with Johnny Hodges Side by Side. Looking to get Legrand Jazz from Impex. My collection is growing rapidly! Thanks for the suggestions! I have several Kind of Blue, and I'm really hesitating on adding the UHQR 45 at that price. Crazy, as I have the Classic 45.

I got a mid-70s pressing of Adam's Apple a couple months ago that sounds excellent. It's definitely my favorite album from Wayne Shorter, it's the only one of his records I've heard where he goes for a more full tone on his sax for pretty much the whole record. To my ears he usually leans more into a pitchy sound I'm not always in the mood for (maybe that's what they call "multiphonics"). Herbie Hancock is great on it too, I really love when he's a sideman

Enjoyed the video Scott. By the way, you have one of the best backgrounds of anyone doing record videos. The greenery is nicer than seeing the usual contrived spines of records in the background. I like good organ jazz too, as should most audiophiles, as the enormous air volume of the organ is a real audiophile delight if your system sounds airy and expansive; which it should. Some other great Jazz guys who made some great organ/ensemble recordings are Dr. Lonnie Smith, whose best known album is called Spiral. And there's another guy, whose name is almost identical, who is also a great Jazz organist: Lonnie Liston Smith. Some unique artists just have such a distinctive sound, that you just know its them within a a few seconds. Lonnie Liston Smith is one of those artists. His music is so relaxing, yet never boring and he uses little percussion instruments for effect throughout most of his music. His music is really interesting, and if anyone ever can be said to have their own sound, it's him.
Speaking before of air volume. I had lived in places that have an 8 foot ceiling, a 9 foot ceiling and I think a 10 foot ceiling. The image height and overall sense of limitless expansion is always better with higher ceilings. If you've been living and playing your stereo somewhere that has 10 foot ceilings, it is a real major let down sonically, moving to someplace with an 8 foot ceiling.
I just made an lp LOT find with still sealed blues records on old labels like Yazoo. Not my cup of tea to listen to usually, but finding old rare records is one thing, but finding them still sealed is really surprising.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  2 роки тому

Wow what a great find, those blues records are so rare, and sealed?! That's amazing!
I was just talking room acoustics with a friend of mine last night and we were discussing exactly what you say about ceiling height and image size. Good observation. I'm stuck with 8ft for the moment :-(
I've got one Lonnie Smith record so far, the recent All In My Mind. I'm sure the early stuff is great too. He turned me on to organ jazz.
Thank you for mentioning the background setting. I think the change looks great too. I was hoping someone would notice. I don't feel a need for a wall of records. I take just a shift of angle, and I love it. Thank you for the great observations.

I really think you and others will find this very funny. There are some GREAT references to Fremer and Guttenberg. I'll see if I can post the link in a reply to this post in case it is automatically removed. I REALLY hope you like it! 😊

I'd like to see it, but I don't think links are allowed in comments. They just don't come through. I have no problem with it. See if you can do it.

@@ThePressingMatters Thank you most kindly Sir, that is very nice of you! 😊 It LOOKS so far like the link is still there, but if it goes away, I have listed the actual title of the video here on UA-cam so that you can easily find it. Thanks again for being so nice, it honestly is VERY funny!
