Aucuba is like that when it is planted in the wrong place. Put the Aucuba in deep shade and it will get some deep green leaves with some gentle yellow shades. Lovely plant in the right place
I agree about the yellow splotches. They look like paint dripped on them. But I love silver variegation, especially if it’s stripey. Purple variegation looks like bruises to me 😂
I loved this video and agree with so many! Was totally going, finally yes someone feels same about roses. I have one more I passionately dislike- mahonia (obviously not thornless) My mums garden I now look after has one that is huge and viscous. You can’t escape being spiked, even the youngest leaves. Even worse the dead leaves when trying to do weeding and clean up and I’ve not yet found gloves that they can’t find their way through! I can appreciate flowers and berries but I’d rather they were far away from me! (Rant over) 😆 I say rant over but I just remembered when tidying roses (not in my garden) last summer standing up and getting spiked in the top of my head - had an impressive amount of blood down the face. Still couldn’t convince them to get rid!

Talking of roses.......bet you've never had to argue with the 'Rambling Rector'..absolutely vicious thorns, but worth ot for the vast quantity of small white blossoms (c144/ raceme) that smell of apple blossom!
Bluebells. Great in a wood in the country but a nightmare to eradicate! Also florists daffodils. Bred to have long stems for the cut flower trade, they flop over and the leaves get in the way after flowering. Much better to stick to the tiny ones I think!
I bought the tiny daffodils thinking they would be ever so nice in a small clump. Next year they came up as large ordinary daffs. This year if they come up they are being moved.
I thought I was the only one who thought some variegated plants look diseased! I also cringe at some of the grossly double tulips and some of the double lilies. Abominations.

Always interesting to hear other people's pet hates. I do find roses bit needy but my absolute hate is houttuynia. It's taken me three years to try and get rid of it and I doubt I have. It also stinks!
The stinkiest plant I've ever smelled is the buffalo gourd (cucurbita foetidissima--"most stinky cucumber"). Some people have described the smell as bad human body odor, but I think it's much worse than that. To me it smells like a mangy dog. It's a very complex smell. It has a lot of components--all of them BAD.
There are thornless roses. Goldfinch yellow and white, Bleu Magenta mauve Kathleen Harrop pink fragrant and a dozen more. I agree about creeping Jenny, black bamboo and Bear breeches. Just thugs! Thanks for the tips !
I feel the same way about variegated leaf plants. If you have lots of them they all start looking like they've been put thru a blender, nothing is distinct, the garden has just become a Variegation patch.
Lol...I have a plant "hate" list too. For some reason barberry bushes are unacceptable to me due to their thorniness - but I'm a-okay with all my roses. I have about 25 rose bushes and plan to add about 10 more this spring to complete my rose garden.
Hated barberry since I was a kid. I wondered why anyone would plant it, much less my parents. I have no problem at all with roses. One just as to be careful--a small price to pay.
I believe there are 2 types of bamboo. There are “spreaders” and also “clumpers”.Ask/research/ chose carefully. Mine are clumpers and no problems/ they look like super sized corn stalks at their base. Neighbor across the fence bought the neighbor bought some “spreaders” and they have invaded 4 backyards with underground rhizomes almost 2 meters + in length. Every year or so I have to dig up those spreading rhizomes whenever a leaf breaks the surface.
I don't like most variegated plants either. I did buy a beautiful iris varigata that has a nice, single white stripe through the leaf. It's pretty. But no yellow variation or blotchy/speckled leaves. I just don't like them. Love roses, though! Haha 🌹 Avoid spiderwort at all costs. It's native here in the US, but horrible. Sends runners everywhere and if you leave just a tiny piece of it, it comes back. The name says it all!

I have a few in my garden, only because I inherited them when I moved back into the family home when mum died so they will probably stay out of respect to her. The other is wild strawberry, they have run amok in the garden and no matter how much I yank them up they still flourish. Ah well 😂
That was amusing thank you! My bete noire plant is alchemilla mollis. Beautiful when fresh and starting to grow, but when it dies down its hideous and depressing and shrivels up and is ugly! Plus, it self seeds everywhere..........
Everyone hates “creeping jenny” 😂 but in my garden I’m just happy to have something covering the ground that can put up with intense deer browsing. Nothing much gets outs of control because they constantly prune for me 🙄 a few pieces from containers over the years are in fact taking over, but in this case I’m ok with it. There’s one called “chameleon plant” or “fish mint” that is actually too aggressive for me, since nothing eats it. The only rose I grow is Rosa rugosa…the animals don’t touch it, and neither do I 😅 I let it sucker and take over a hillside and I’m happier for it! The only pain is the Japanese beetles…hoping the moles take care of plenty of their grubs for me. And I’m so guilty of loving “those horrible little blotches” 😂
Me too I like Creeping Jenny; I have mine in an old chimney pot in the garden and it looks spectacular spilling over. I will get more for ground cover.

I love Creeping Jenny i have it rambling over my pots and paths. Even some is growing in my small pond. I also love Nasturtium's which now self seed all over the place. My Husband sadly laid fake grass and we have a lot of decking so I do everything I can to soften the whole look and for me it works brilliantly. Each to their own of course.
I love nasturtiums. I love their special smell and the sight of them which reminds me of my childhood but I don't have the space for them in the garden. I used to grow them in an allotment in a shady area. They would return every year but when they died in the Winter they left a large bare patch of earth.
I agree with the black bamboo and I would add any type of running bamboo is invasive. Their roots can travel metres under ground and take over. Even in a pot they are very vigorous and need constant reporting and are very difficult to divide. Also, mine have aphids so leaves turn yellow look terrible and very difficult to spray with loads of small leaves. Just a pain of a plant. The clumping fargesia types are the best bet for bamboo.
Creeping Jenny is a plant I bought last year and I loved it so much I want it again this year for my baskets. The acanthus molis is a plant we had in the garden when we bought the house. It has taken me years to get rid of it and so hard to dig up. So glad that after about 4 yrs it was gone.
I'm not keen on those spoltchy splattered variegated plants either, but there are some variegated types that I think do look lovely. My favourite - probably one of my most favourite plants I have now - that I got last year is Fatsia Japonica 'camouflage'. It is just stunning and I look at it everyday - it's stayed beautiful in all weathers that's been thrown at it so far, from hot and dry to sodden wet months of rain to freezing cold -6. Amazing plant. In regards to my Heuchera collection that got attacked by the dreaded vine weevil, I am wanting to treat with Nematodes when they are likely to be active again, probably once in spring, once in autumn to try keep on top of them. I wanted to ask when do you think would be best to use them, maybe March or April? And I was a little confused about ordering them - if I order them online, does the box need to be refrigerated as soon as I get it - so need to order when I want to use them - or is it only if you open it up, so can be ordered in advance? My neighbor grows running bamboo right up against the fence. After multiple (lighthearted but firm) complaints from me, they're working on keeping it contained. However, there are still dead leaves that CONSTANTLY drift across the fence into my garden which require my constant cleaning.
Pyracantha for the same reason but I do now grow roses after many years of not wanting to bother with them. Also carex pendula!! How is this plant allowed to be sold?!

She showed a picture of pavement roses/rosa rugosa. I have these and the torns are not bad. It's a carefree variety that sends up nice runners that I easily propagate for new plants. Perfect for erosion control! I highly recommend them!
It took me YEARS to rid my garden of Acanthus, root and seed. I am still battling the Lysimachia I mistakenly put in as pretty groundcover, even weedkiller doesn’t seem to work. I have had to strip borders of all plants to pick it out of their roots. I think some plants should come with warnings on their labels.
My list of ‘not in my back yard’ plants gets longer and longer based on bitter experience. Agree with everything on your list. The most beautiful climber in my garden was campsis radicans until the dead tree that hosted it had to be removed a couple of years ago. Campsis is still throwing up shoots everywhere and gypsophate hardly even slows it down. A gorgeous thug - beware.
I agree with most. Thought I was alone haha. Have to say though that I'm a convert when it comes to roses. Hated them for the thorns, blooms and allround in your face appearance, but I'm growing 6 varieties now. Flowers don't last long though and look ugly once they're past their prime.
I, like you, don't grow a lot of roses. But I do have a beautiful thornless rose and one in a pot that is easily pruned. Also one David Austin with an addictive scent and some miniature ones that need little care or pruning. Over the years I've taken out the majority of the roses in my garden. Injuries and pain trump beauty.
I agree! I don’t like plants that hurt me. If one wants beautiful scent that won’t hurt try mignonette. Dahlia from seed gets you beautiful flowers that pollinators like and you don’t have to over winter bulbs just save the seeds.
Saponaria officianalis is a one to watch too. Very pretty to look at but it took over my whole bed and took two years to eradicate. It likes to come up in the middle of other perennials so we had to dig everything up to clear it.
Take a good size plastic container, cut out the bottom and press it into the soil. Plant spreaders in there, so it stays clumpsize, away from neighbouring rootsystems. Saves nutriënts too.
I think your milk thistle is the same as our Canadian (not from Canada) thistle - it's invasive, and VERY hard to eradicate. It propagates by stolons AND seeds. I'm battling it now - if you don't keep on top of it constantly, it totally takes over.
I have Creeping Jenny, but it’s contained on all sides by concrete. It’s been there for at least 15 years. Still, I plan on getting rid of it this year and putting in perennial geranium. I suspect I’ll be pulling out bits of the Creeping Jenny for years.
My hatred of roses (still have a soft spot for the odd one) was born of spending my late teens in a field of the damn things heading back rootstocks and budding. Roses just remind me of back ache and burning hamstrings from bending over!
My Acanthus Mollis didn't get covered in mildew but it did get chewed to bits each year by slugs and looked a mess. I've dug it up but bits keep appearing still so I'm still digging bits out. I no longer grow plants that keep dying on me such as passion flower (passiflora), clematis, chinese lanterns, lupins, liatris, foxgloves (they just look diseased) hollyhocks, saxifraga and tulips. Hostas are also slug magnets.
I absolutely hate berberis. I have two left from the previous house owners. I hack them back each year and I get poked every time without fail. However, I do have many roses in my garden and adding more each year. I will tolerate the painful pokes because of their beautiful blooms and scent. A plant that I will never ever grow is milkweed. (Please note “weed” in the name!) I know it is good for the monarchs and pollinators but they can grow out in the fields, just not in my garden. 😂

However, I like many variegated plants……esp euonymous Emerald n Gold, Aureus, Daphne odora aureomarginata, Somerset variegated, 😮hackonechloa old gold and aureo maculata, miscanthus Gold Bar, miscanthus Variegata, Libertia Taupo Sunset, gauras like Corries Gold and those you yourself have developed Rosie. Yellow leaves too are fantastic……philadelphus Aureus, gold conifers, cornus Aureus.

I agree about roses. Not for me. But I did find lykkefund which is supposedly thornless and makes pollinators happy. I really hope lykkefund stays thornless. Wish me luck.
All the people that rush to hate variegated plants surely haven't thought about hostas...except for the hideous White Feather, I can't name a single unpleasant cultivar from the top of my head 😉 and that particular group of plants is all about variegation.
As long as it doesn't escape the pot you're fine. If it touches the ground it will root and travel all over. I was so excited when mine survived the winter in my zone 5 garden. Unfortunately it smoothers your beautiful plants and takes over. Just make sure you keep it trimmed and away from the ground.
My most disliked plants are hellebores, as the roots completely take over and are murder to remove, also the flowers are droopy and not really seen much. The other plant is Japanese anemones which are almost impossible to get rid they are so out of control. And finally the Mexican lily or alstromerias, which may have pretty flowers but once established, have corms that if you leave a tiny bit behind, keep on growing. JO.😊
I call the Berberis the Barbarian plant. I hate it with a passion and chopped the ones growing in my garden, planted in there by a landscaper. My dislike of variegated plants is also well-known. The only plant I have that's on your list is the mighty rose, lol. And it has to have very few thorns and a fabulous perfume. Otherwise, I refuse to grow them 😂
I am desperately trying to get rid of green alkanet from my garden . Has anybody got any good ideas ? I bought it as a good ' bee ' plant but it has spread invasively. Help !
That’s considered a noxious weed in my state - not that a classification stops it. Easier to pull/dig if it’s rained or you water first the night before.

Love variegated leaves. I kill roses (not On purpose) always hated gladioli especially peach but this year ihave challenged my self to grow a Nori ( purple abd white) and at night (deep scarlet) . Hate pyracantha soooo prickly. Ivy in pots is fine..i love creeping jenny . Dont mind it in my grass as i have problems with yarrow in my grass.

Iceberg roses are nearly thornless. I have the same problem with roses tearing my skin. I love the icebergs, both in white and pink.

My neighbor grows running bamboo right up against the fence. After multiple (lighthearted but firm) complaints from me, they're working on keeping it contained. However, there are still dead leaves that CONSTANTLY drift across the fence into my garden which require my constant cleaning.

You're right about roses although they are lovely.
She showed a picture of pavement roses/rosa rugosa. I have these and the torns are not bad. It's a carefree variety that sends up nice runners that I easily propagate for new plants. Perfect for erosion control! I highly recommend them!
It took me YEARS to rid my garden of Acanthus, root and seed. I am still battling the Lysimachia I mistakenly put in as pretty groundcover, even weedkiller doesn’t seem to work. I have had to strip borders of all plants to pick it out of their roots. I think some plants should come with warnings on their labels.
My list of ‘not in my back yard’ plants gets longer and longer based on bitter experience. Agree with everything on your list. The most beautiful climber in my garden was campsis radicans until the dead tree that hosted it had to be removed a couple of years ago. Campsis is still throwing up shoots everywhere and gypsophate hardly even slows it down. A gorgeous thug - beware.
I agree with roses. I only have one because my husband gave it to me as an anniversary gift.

Have to say though that I'm a convert when it comes to roses. Hated them for the thorns, blooms and allround in your face appearance, but I'm growing 6 varieties now. Flowers don't last long though and look ugly once they're past their prime.
I, like you, don't grow a lot of roses. But I do have a beautiful thornless rose and one in a pot that is easily pruned. Also one David Austin with an addictive scent and some miniature ones that need little care or pruning. Over the years I've taken out the majority of the roses in my garden. Injuries and pain trump beauty.
I agree! I don’t like plants that hurt me. If one wants beautiful scent that won’t hurt try mignonette. Dahlia from seed gets you beautiful flowers that pollinators like and you don’t have to over winter bulbs just save the seeds.
Saponaria officianalis is a one to watch too. Very pretty to look at but it took over my whole bed and took two years to eradicate. It likes to come up in the middle of other perennials so we had to dig everything up to clear it.
Take a good size plastic container, cut out the bottom and press it into the soil. Plant spreaders in there, so it stays clumpsize, away from neighbouring rootsystems. Saves nutriënts too.

I think your milk thistle is the same as our Canadian (not from Canada) thistle - it's invasive, and VERY hard to eradicate. It propagates by stolons AND seeds. I'm battling it now - if you don't keep on top of it constantly, it totally takes over.
Same. It takes over gardens easily if not properly removed. Eradicating it is a yearly task.
Great advice. I had dug up my Acanthus Mollis it was covered in mildew and quite evasive. Everywhere i have been they have looked dreadful

I have Creeping Jenny, but it’s contained on all sides by concrete. It’s been there for at least 15 years. Still, I plan on getting rid of it this year and putting in perennial geranium. I suspect I’ll be pulling out bits of the Creeping Jenny for years.

😂 my garden rule is “no thorns”. The only reprieve are my raspberries & blackberries in containers, and even then I pick thornless varieties!
My hatred of roses (still have a soft spot for the odd one) was born of spending my late teens in a field of the damn things heading back rootstocks and budding. Roses just remind me of back ache and burning hamstrings from bending over!
I'm with you on the variation. It must be done correctly along an edge maybe certain hostas.
My Acanthus Mollis didn't get covered in mildew but it did get chewed to bits each year by slugs and looked a mess. I've dug it up but bits keep appearing still so I'm still digging bits out. I no longer grow plants that keep dying on me such as passion flower (passiflora), clematis, chinese lanterns, lupins, liatris, foxgloves (they just look diseased) hollyhocks, saxifraga and tulips. Hostas are also slug magnets.
I absolutely hate berberis. I have two left from the previous house owners. I hack them back each year and I get poked every time without fail. However, I do have many roses in my garden and adding more each year. I will tolerate the painful pokes because of their beautiful blooms and scent. A plant that I will never ever grow is milkweed. (Please note “weed” in the name!) I know it is good for the monarchs and pollinators but they can grow out in the fields, just not in my garden. 😂

However, I like many variegated plants……esp euonymous Emerald n Gold, Aureus, Daphne odora aureomarginata, Somerset variegated, 😮hackonechloa old gold and aureo maculata, miscanthus Gold Bar, miscanthus Variegata, Libertia Taupo Sunset, gauras like Corries Gold and those you yourself have developed Rosie. Yellow leaves too are fantastic……philadelphus Aureus, gold conifers, cornus Aureus.
Why the heck hasn't someone developed a thornless rose? There is a thornless blackberry.

I agree about roses. Not for me. But I did find lykkefund which is supposedly thornless and makes pollinators happy. I really hope lykkefund stays thornless. Wish me luck.

All the people that rush to hate variegated plants surely haven't thought about hostas...except for the hideous White Feather, I can't name a single unpleasant cultivar from the top of my head 😉 and that particular group of plants is all about variegation.
Yes but it is not spots of variegation on Hosta it is subtle mostly 😊

As long as it doesn't escape the pot you're fine. If it touches the ground it will root and travel all over. I was so excited when mine survived the winter in my zone 5 garden. Unfortunately it smoothers your beautiful plants and takes over. Just make sure you keep it trimmed and away from the ground.

The thistle is outlawed in some places of US.
My most disliked plants are hellebores, as the roots completely take over and are murder to remove, also the flowers are droopy and not really seen much.
The other plant is Japanese anemones which are almost impossible to get rid they are so out of control.
And finally the Mexican lily or alstromerias, which may have pretty flowers but once established, have corms that if you leave a tiny bit behind, keep on growing.

I call the Berberis the Barbarian plant. I hate it with a passion and chopped the ones growing in my garden, planted in there by a landscaper. My dislike of variegated plants is also well-known. The only plant I have that's on your list is the mighty rose, lol. And it has to have very few thorns and a fabulous perfume. Otherwise, I refuse to grow them 😂
I am desperately trying to get rid of green alkanet from my garden . Has anybody got any good ideas ? I bought it as a good ' bee ' plant but it has spread invasively. Help !
That’s considered a noxious weed in my state - not that a classification stops it. Easier to pull/dig if it’s rained or you water first the night before.

Love variegated leaves. I kill roses (not On purpose) always hated gladioli especially peach but this year ihave challenged my self to grow a Nori ( purple abd white) and at night (deep scarlet) . Hate pyracantha soooo prickly. Ivy in pots is fine..i love creeping jenny . Dont mind it in my grass as i have problems with yarrow in my grass.

Allium Triquetrum. It's literally taken over my garden. No matter how much I dig them up more just keep popping up. BE AWARE!!
