Harvey Pekar was an intellectual giant. He had a deep understanding of how sincere, authentic personal expression can resonate universally among all people because we all share so many experiences and feelings in our everyday lives. He was a thoughtful surrogate for all people -- white, black, liberal, conservative, etc. His art derives from what's the same about all of us, not what's different.
I don’t see it. He seemed intelligent, but an “intellectual giant”? He was a grumpy pedantic guy, probably a communist, with a deeply suspicious nature. He seemed extremely unhappy.
@@jerrywitaj Him being grumpy, deeply suspicious and "probably a communist" aren't the arguments against him being an intellectual that you seem to think they are. Take a look around at the world, if you think it's the kind of place that makes intellectual people happy then I don't really know what to tell you. People who are happy living in a world as rife with inequality, corruption and cruelty as ours probably aren't particularly smart.
5:15 I LOVE when she said "she (Joyce ) is very protective of Harvey" you saw these huge bright lights light up in his eyes. I am SO happy he found someone and shared his story to all the Harvey's of the world. Still one of my fav films of all time.Very captivating and engaging filmmaking.

@@ZnenTitan Oh wow, you've heard of Gurney Slade. Apparently audiences were totally baffled by it when it first aired in the UK and it was pulled from the schedules mid-way into its run. I heard about it a few years ago and bought the DVD. 'Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged women.'
@@ChilliCheezdog Yah, I've seen it, and from what I've read a young David Jones AKA Ziggy Stardust Loved it. (But then again he would wouldn't he?) BTW love the theme music on Gurney Slade too.
I had the pleasure of meeting Harvey and Joyce years ago at the Chicago 1comicon 1990. He signed one of my copies of American Splendor and we chatted. I took a picture of him and Joyce which I still have. I didn't know how lucky I was at the time.
Funny that Harvey is so normal and agreeable here. I guess he was sort of deliberately playing a cantankerous and misanthropic character for Letterman.
I think by this time in his life Harvey was using antidepressants, so I think they squelched his irascibility. Letterman was asked to participate in the movie but he refused so I'm inclined to believe the enmity between those two was genuine.
charlie rose is lucky he was talking to a comparatively mild-mannered harvey pekar, this interview was god-awful and a younger harvey wouldve ripped him to shreds. How rose ever got a career in media is beyond me

I got to meet Harvey Pekar about a year before he died. He will always be a hero of mine.

TomKaren94 I met Joyce at the dedication ceremony at the Cleveland Hts University Hts library.
I'm guessing it was a memorable meeting.

I missed this back in the day, found it recently and love it. The Anthology just dropped in my mail box. Thrilled.

You post this on all pekar clips?

David Cassette he’s not an intellectual giant. That’s all I said. I don’t know what you’re blathering about.
Right... The only thing he hated were phonies and Bull Shit!

Rest in God's loving embrace Mr Picard
I'm an Englishman in love with America. You gave me my favourite writers, my favourite food, and my favourite music. God bless America.
Thank you! I think that most Americans have a soft spot for the Brits as well. BTW, I can't get enough of the Avengers (Great 60s stuff!)

I rented American Splendor when I was 15 and it changed me forever.

my first exposure to Harvey was Letterman, most entertaining trainwreck ever
one of my all time favorite movies.
Harvey Pekar was great at making the unremarkable remarkable.
A truly unique film. the approach, the editing.
I hava feeling all of us here we would have gotten Harvey's jokes along with Paul Giamatti.
R.I.P. you Cleveland file clerk
Great upload, thanks!
I was in a supermarket when that happened to me. When I saw this scene I laughed so much I peed my pants
The decision to take in their girl got to me. And then the actual footage at the retirement party.

To me it was all a blatant act
@Radar-Crew if he did he's trolling you
@Radar-Crew yes one is trolling, one is tricked
@Radar-Crew I'm not making up anything
Great movie ! in my top 3 off all time
Paul Giamatti is a genius!!!!
CHARLIE ROSE: ASKS A QUESTION AND THEN FREQUENTLY INTERRUPTS WHEN THEY ANSWER. LET THEM ANSWER. ME TOO FREAK.
RIP Harvey....
Plenty of nervous laughter from everyone but Harvey. Must be excruciating for him.
Still bummed that Charley Rose stopped doing talk shows. He did great work and a lot of it.
Meanwhile, when on this bright blue planet are we finally gonna at least get this thing in BLU-RAY?!
9:15 Crumb offer like volunteer to illustrate Harvey comics.
Zubal's is unworldly
Charlie Rose interview style 😖
Sorry I spelled his name wrong
charlie rose is lucky he was talking to a comparatively mild-mannered harvey pekar, this interview was god-awful and a younger harvey wouldve ripped him to shreds. How rose ever got a career in media is beyond me
peekar is way much more good looking than giamatti. just saying.
and he had his voice back too!
That chick is his wife???
After seeing HP on David Letterman I am surprised he was not committed to a institution. His obsession with petty money and donuts was bizarre?
