- Is it possible? Can CarnEvil be actually cleared in one life/credit/continue/whatever? It might be possible!
If you want to skip the backstory gameplay begins at 2:10. It is a no commentary run.
I was playing around with the game the other day when I got the idea to try playing it with all difficulty options set to Very Easy - Game Difficulty, Player Starting Health, and Monster Strength - to see if it's possible to clear the game in one straight run without continuing.
My first attempt made extensive use of savestates. Basically if I was coming to a difficult area I'd just save, and if I took too much damage, I reloaded. Same for bosses.
Round 2 saw me doing less of that. Reserved reloading mainly for boss fights.
Run 3 I tried going through stages without using save states. If I died or took too much damage, I started that stage over.
And now we're on this run I recorded. Managed to get through all 3 first stages and even the Big Top all the way until TokkenTakker, and then I had to actually reload. But I did manage to beat him eventually without dying, as you'll see. So a no-death run IS theoretically possible!
The order of stages and why is:
1)Rickety Town - You'll probably take the most damage here. There's only ONE health power up too, and I'd rather just take loads of damage here first so I can spend time in Haunted House or Freakshow getting healed up.
2)Haunted House - Gotta love that Life Up in the beginning of the stage! There's also 2 more life ups, as well as the mother of all omelets: the Extended Clip. Seriously, this power-up is amazing. You'll now have TEN shots before reloading, so that's 4 more you can go. Believe me, that split second you take to reload can lead to lots of damage during boss fights.
3)Freakshow - The only one left. There's also 2 life ups you can get. You'll probably not take that much damage here either. It kinda just depends on Junior/Deaddy's attack patterns. Sometimes he'll run up and kick you, other times he won't.
Something else to look out for is unavoidable attacks. Bosses will of course rekt your health bar. But there's two spots in the game where you'll take UNAVOIDABLE damage:
*The Garage in Rickety Town. At one point you'll take TWO hits and two Smilin' Bobs will zoom past you.
*The Trap Door where the bats fly out in Haunted House. One bat just seems to magically appear and bite you.
*There's also when you first land in the Spider Monkey Cage in Freakshow, but that's more of a cheap shot than the game playing dirty. You can shoot the moneky before it hits you, just watch out for Betty.
Bosses are also the main reason why everything is set to Very Easy. This turns their health down and yours' up. While they'll quickly shread you if you're not careful...you can get them into stun lock if you're fast enough. Or at least make them flinch more than normal, which is a couple seconds they aren't attacking you and a couple seconds free you have to wail on 'em!
I really think this is possible. I'll be practicing myself. If there's any other CarnEvil monster mashers out there watching this....let's try to do it!

Great strategies. The guaranteed damage in Rickety Town is such a run killer if you play any of the other two levels first! One strategy I recommend is trying to bring the machine gun into the boss fight. Collect the machine gun, then tap your gunfire carefully on the regular enemies so by the time you reach the boss, you still have machine gun ammo left. Then fire away at their weak points with the machine gun just as the fight begins, and it'll save you some work. This can be done on Evil Marie, Eyeclops, and Junior.

Shooting Evil Marie's neck scar and Junior's giant chin can delay them from attacking.
Yeah, it seems like those spots do more damage which will cause them to "flinch" and delay their attacks.

It's still there, but doesn't work anymore. 😔
I always wondered if it would be possible for there to be 2 players and one hangs on to the acid all the way through to the end for Krampus 🤔

Never was able to beat this in arcades as a kid. Nice to know that the game was kind of rigged against the player so it wasn't completely my fault lol
Yeeeeah there's a fair amount of times where you either need the quickest trigger finger or superhuman reflexes.
Even in this run there's moments where it's REALLY hard not to take damage - like with those darn ol' bumper cars.

There's also a TAS on Very Hard for 1CC, and even that barely managed to make it even though it was able to fire shots each frame and move from target to target instantaneously.

According to Twin Galaxies someone cleared this game one credit on normal. Probably cheated though.

@@AnthroArcade I remember attempting to beat this without getting hit, or at the least dying, but there were moments that were just unavoidable X_X
