      Mudkip971 never seen Ed wood, big fish, Frankenweenie, coraline. loved pee wees big adventure as a kid alot and still love it. it's wild and totally hilarious. great story too. Edward scissorhands I was terrified as a kid. the part where he comes out from the dark corner in the attic and creepily walks to the Avon lady. Johnny Depp too awesome in that role. he did it sooo well

      Tim Burton has nothing to do with Coraline. I thought it was too bit the misconception exists cuz it was directed by the same guy as nightmare before Xmas, Henry Selick

    to me Tim Burton's version of Sleepy Hollow is incredible, i have nothing against the direction the movie took, it had such a menagerie of celebrities, there's no lack of awesomeness.
    i think the reason Tim Burton went down that route, is because Disney did Sleepy Hollow such justice, even Tim Burton knew he couldnt top that.

  • @connorbrennan4233
    @connorbrennan4233 4 роки тому +10

    Sleepy Hollow was basically Tim Burton's tribute to Hammer horror. In that area, I think it succeeds wildly. The atmosphere, production design, dark comedy, suspense, eccentric character types, blood, everything. It truly felt like Hammer had, shall we say, "risen from the grave."

    I like the parallels and differences between James' review of this film and the Nostalgia Critic's review of it. They both see it as a mixed film and not as good as the Disney version, but about a lot of imagery in the film they have very different views on it. Doug sees Christopher Walken's portrayal of the Headless Horseman as silly, while James considers it badass. I, for one, agree with James on that. I guess for me it helped that I've never seen the Disney version, so it wouldn't subsequently spoil this film for me. The atmosphere in it is amazing, and the slightly stilted but dramatic acting gives it a feel like a play, which for me makes it feel older, more classic.

    Tim Burton's attempt at making a Hammer film, underlined by Christopher Lee being the one who sends Ichabod to Sleepy Hollow is absolutely gorgeous and dripping with atmosphere. It's worth seeing just to appreciate the imagery.
    Also, it's my favorite Depp performance. I love how he turns Ichabod into a heroic fraidy-cat, especially his habit of ducking behind anyone else for cover. And at one point he's even using his kid sidekick as a human shield. Oh and Christopher Walken as the Horseman is all the recommendation you need to watch it!

    The disney version is amazing, of course, and I'll happily watch it again and again, but my only gripe with it would be that it's so hard to suspend disbelief enough accept that the Headless Horseman might just be Brom Bones in disguise.
    I mean, there's even a shot of Ichabod peering into the collar of the guy and being terrified. You'd think that would be enough to clue him in, if it was just a costume. Also, the horseman is way too slash-happy to make it seem like it was just a prank to scare off Ichabod, instead of outright murdering him. Finally, the outfit is just way too perfect for me to believe it was just a plot that Brom dreamed up at the last minute and hurriedly cobbled together.
    Of course, trying to 'fix' any of this stuff would have meant ruining one of the most action-packed scenes in Disney history by watering it down, so I can't really fault them for picking the route they took.

    *sigh* I guess this means he won't be covering Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" from last year. While not a masterpiece, it's still one of those overlooked surprises--beautiful visuals, amazing cinematography, a chilling story that sadly doesn't get interesting until the second half, great performances, but I still wished a lot of the gory effects weren't so CGI'ed. Still it's worth a look, especially in time for Halloween.

    Love Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton has Johnny Depp star in a lot of his films.

    Disney's Ichabod is such a nostalgic, creepy trip down memory lane for me! Watched it when I was like 5 or 6 and it's stuck with me ever since.

    This is the second of three films (that I know of) co-starring Michael Gough and Chistopher Lee. And in none of those films do they ever have any scenes together. Also I believe this is the only movie that featured three Star Wars Sith Lords actors (Lee, Ian McDiarmid, and Ray Park). Lastly, I would also like to point out that this is the third classic horror reboot produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

    Fun Fact: Because of the silver retention process used to create that really contrasty image on film, they had to use really bright orange blood to visible. At proper brightness, the color of the blood wouldn't read: it would show up too dark.

    SUPER underrated film, and definitely my 2nd fave Burton film after Ed Wood. Visually it's just gorgeous, like every frame. Its a Film Noir take on a classic horror tale, with sublime colourful gothic visuals, and some kooky humour to boot. Such a great flick.

    This is one of my all- time favorite movies.
    James needed to put in a spoiler warning in regarding who the true villain was.
    Speaking of, Miranda Richardson gives an incredible performance when we learn her true colors, easily one of my favorite "WTF!? He/She was the baddie all along?" surprise villains.

    I really enjoyed this movie as a kid (13 when this came out). It was so violent and gory. I loved the cast. Johnny Depp was fun as Icobad Crane, I liked seeing all the other actors interacting with him and his odd behaviors. He wasn't over the top but still, funny to see.
    I gotta agree, the visuals were outstanding. I wish they more films looked like this.
    Sad to know Monster Madness is almost at an end. Looking forward to what's coming tomorrow.

    I suppose a faithful adaptation would be nice, it's a classic American story, but it's not a classic American horror or monster story. A ghost story, only in the slightest, since it's made obvious there are no ghosts. There's no headless horseman. There's nothing. One guy scared another away. That's it. Wouldn't make much for a feature length film.

    • @colliric

      promontorium The ending of the original story was ambiguous. It may have been him, it may not have. it's left ambiguous.

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 8 років тому +1

      OK but what's not unambiguous is that in the entirety of the story the only spooky thing that happens is someone throws a pumpkin at Ichabod and appears to be headless. That's it. No other hauntings. Nothing.

    Odd that James seems surprised when the face forms on the Horseman and it's Christopher Walken. There's a 5 minute backstory near the beginning of the film where we see Walken quite plainly.
