    I own the Seiko Prospex SSC911 Solar quartz chronograph. I paid under $650 USD for it. It is the panda dial with a domed sapphire crystal. I'm completely happy with it.

    Thanks for the show, Russ, fantastic one again! That's a beauty of a Seiko right there! I recently picked up a pearl-dial "ghost" Alpinist the other day on a whim, and I must admit, I'm falling a bit in love with Seiko again... I'd let this one pass I think, it's a little too pricey and too chunky for me right now, but I'm really liking the more vintage-inspired pieces they're doing lately. Makes me wonder where they're going next!

    A beauty for sure. You hit the nail on the head with comments on the date circle ... Too expensive to have a date background that doesn't match the dial color. This is where a mechquartz dominates - complicated movements needing to be slim yet give a smooth second hand sweep ... For a lot less money. All that being said - good on Seiko for taking a punt on the high end mechanical chrono market. This will sell.

    What a great looking watch! Pricey for sure but it’s hard to think of any other fully in-house mechanical chronograph that can come anywhere near the price of this Seiko. And that’s before you factor in the zaratsu polishing etc. I agree that we could do without a date window and it is a thick old thing but otherwise I really like it!

    If that price has got you down, you can get a similar look from Seiko's mechaquartz-powered SSB429 for a fraction of the price - and it wears much better due to being thinner and lighter.

    This just made me realize that I can't think of a non Grand Seiko, Seiko mechanical chronograph that isn't solar quartz. Impressive and very much needed for the brand! (I also love the circular date display in general. So much more refined than a square cut out, IMHO). Any thing under 15mm is fine, IMHO. Somebody does need to go to Seiko HQ and hold them hostage until they ditch all their pin and collar links, LOL. So ridiculous.

    Several years ago I bought a microbrand dhrono with a 8R28 (99% what you're getting here) for £700, It's beginning to look a bargain. Both 8R28 and 8R48 are chronos based on earlier Seiko three hander movements so being "built up" (not sure of the technical term) they are relatively thick movements. Mine has performed well. People complain about the price of Seikos but I'm betting that the non-limited edition will eventually be available with good discounts for those with patience. The wife won't put it on her wish list. 😂😂

    I was shocked to learn that San Martin use the exact same polishing technique on some of their watches. Of course, I'm not saying it's the same quality as Grand Seiko, but it's just another reason that seiko needs to step up their game in the entry to mid level.

    I'm normally one to criticise Seiko for their pricing in the Prospex line, but in this case I think it's fair given the 8R movement. It's when they charge £1200-1500 for a regular time and date-only 6R35 that I get annoyed. Agree it looks too large/thick for many wrists. My 6139-6012 chronograph from the 1970s is only 13.8mm thick whilst also packing a vertical clutch and column wheel, amazing really.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 6 місяців тому

      I had a similar size watch years ago and if the band had even a little bit of play, it would simply flop around to whatever was the downward position of my wrist. Reminded me of those exercise weights you use. Also, NOBODY needs a date function on a mechanical watch any more. We all have phones for that. And, of course, let's be honest. $3000 USD is right in the middle of some very nice Swiss movement options. I don't see anyone other than the most die-hard Seiko fan buying one as it's very expensive and 3k+ is suddenly a lot of money. $1500 one can think of as a bit over $1000 and a splurge, and $2000... well, it's a gift or something.. but $3000... plus tax... yeah, it's competing with Rolex and the rest as it's "bling"/excess territory and at that point money isn't the issue if you can actually afford a $3000+ watch. Kind of like how nobody "stretches" their budget to buy a Ferrari. If you can afford one, you're also able to afford any other supercar out there. Normal working peasants aren't going to ever see this as an option.

    Hey Russell. Love the review, but I can't help but think that the 'chronograph' is a pointless complication, at least for me. I used to think it was great, and bought a Speedy for it, but I never actually ever used it. The additional pushers spoil the case aesthetic and the extra 'machinery' used to deliver the functionality invariably add thickness to the watch. Plus, if there is a tachymeter scale, it makes for a much wider bezel making the overall watch diameter larger than it needs to be. I must admit these days I basically ignore any watch with a chronograph now.....sigh!

    i like the signed crown when it is suposed to be a "formal" or even an everyday watch, but when it is supposed to be a tool i think is better if it is not signed. I might be alone in this, i know that being signed looks better.

    Look, I think what we need to really acknowledge. Here is the fact that Seco is getting back into producing somewhat affordable, automatic chronograph watches. And for me, I think this is a fantastic watch. However, the date window is definitely a dealbreaker for me, and then the dreaded ex on the dial. Can we just put that on the case back? Fantastic review, and I love your videos. Great to see this one on the channel.

      I think most folks wouldn't mind a tiny date window at 4.30, considering a date complication is more useful than a chrono to a lot of folks. I don't usually mind the Prospex logo but it does stand out too much here, should've been done in a subtler colour.

    It's nice, very nice indeed! But at 2500 pounds? Perhaps not so much! Tonight I ordered my second Arnie, a Tropical, for $349AU (about 180 pounds). Now that watch, at that price, is very, very , very, nice - and with the change... well, it could be a very nice Christmas indeed!!

    • @Mettalchin

      So true. I'm a sucker for Seiko too but their pricing since of late is completely bonkers. Their last true value offerings were with the Turtles, Arnies, Monsters, Samurais (pre-"King" versions) and a few others. Things went downhill after that. £2500 for an automatic chronograph may be "affordable" in the grand scheme of things but I doubt many people want to spend that kind of money for a Seiko on the dial when that's luxury brand territory.

    • @stevezodiac575
      @stevezodiac575 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Mettalchin Interesting too is that a key feature of this watch is the mechanical 8R48 Caliber, yet the identical Seiko caliber albeit designated NE86 is sold to 3rd part manufacturers whose watches can be bought for a fraction of this price! So while it is a lovely watch, I'd rather spend my hard earned on the also beautiful Seiko Speedtimer SSC911P which is about 17% of the cost (in Australia) of this one. And is more accurate too. So while the 8R48 is a wonderful movement, it doesn't really justify this price imho.

      Good points. I think the most I'd personally pay for a Seiko is for the Alpinist. For anything more than that, there are just too many equivalent or better offerings from other reputable brands including Swiss ones. I'm happy with my SNA411 Flightmaster, it'll probably be the first and last Seiko chronograph I ever own unless I get my hands on a white dial Flighty someday 😉

      @@Mettalchin Flightys are very cool, and yes a (rare) white dial (is that cloud white?) would be even cooler. I'd love one of those! Meanwhile I'm happy with the Seiko SSC015P1 Solar Chrono'. Actually it's my favourite GADA watch, although sadly not an auto. Gee - just thought - does that mean the SRQ049J1 would be the perfect GADA (I no longer dive) and One Watch Collection watch ?????!!!! Perhaps I need to buy one after all!😳

      @@stevezodiac575 That Solar Chrono is an absolute beauty, especially for the price. I've had my eye on it for years, missed out on buying the blue dial variant for a steal at one point of time. I'd still love to get my hands on one but they're becoming hard to come by, at least for a good enough price, sigh 😮‍💨 Quartz watches are perfect GADA watches, especially Solars. I'm yet to get my hands on a Solar Seiko but if I did, it would either be the Solar Chrono you have or a good old fashioned Arnie 😎

    I'm a bit confused Russ, How come Seiko could make all those amazing looking automatic chronographs back in the day in the 70's etc but I'm sure they were much thinner back then compared to this lovely modern slab of a watch?, I thought logically the new one would be thinner?

    • @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR
      @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR  6 місяців тому

      Fantastic point ! Ok so let’s get the water proofness out of the way first the case which houses the movement has to have a certain thickness in order to be 100m waterproof . Back then I’m not sure how waterproof they needed to be for people to start asking questions!;) the 6139 and 6138 were strange movements, outdated as the date and day was changed by pushing in the crown at certain tensions and seeing them flip over. The creme del a crème was and is a Valjoux 7750. This movement mimics this. They are thick . I can’t really answer why Seiko can’t . I know Bvugari can make and automatic movements that’s 3 mil thick? Maybe today, to do that type of thinner movement doubles the cost , decreases the amount of skilled watchmakers that can do it????

    To me high beat chronograph means 36000 bph.
    The price being what it is I think the Prospex logo has to be removed from the dial to the crown or the back.
    Not a fan of the bracelet.
    To stick to the vintage vibe it should definitely be reduced in size.

    Funny that a bracelet made specifically for the watch still looks like a poorly matched aftermarket bracelet. It looks like a good bracelet, it just doesn't match up at the end links.
