Can you even imagine Panos Cosmatos doing a Conan the Barbarian movie? Let that sink in..
I now need this!
This movie absolutely drips with the love of film-making - from the slow, surreal beauty of long, quiet scenes, to the raw, visceral violence in the second half.
It's more an experience than a narrative. And it's wonderful!
I’d recommend the film “the ritual “ it’s a 2017 Nordic supernatural horror film set in the forest with a twist
Nothing compares to mandy
Brilliant guys, Jess your love for this movie clearly shines through and makes for an awesome review- thank you
Imagine if Gaspar Noe & David Lynch had a baby, the result = Mandy. Plus I love the creepy Nick Cage smile at the end...priceless.
Have you seen Color Out of Space? Another solid gold Cage film.
Gary's expression at 40:41 is somewhat terrifying and I felt he stared right into my soul
Mandy was easily my favorite film of 2018. It was the best experience I had in a theater as an adult. It was just such a very well made movie that felt like a window into something from a time lost.
Great review chaps nailed it, Jess you are a natural btw ! Brilliant film dripping with Lynchian surrealism - haven't had an urge to give it a repeat viewing though. Fun fact Linus Roache who plays the Cult Leader in Mandy is Ken Barlow from Corrie's son! Would love to see you react to "Bone Tomahawk" with Kurt Russell.
Thanks for the review, lads! My top three movies of 2018 were "Mandy," "Suspiria," and "Hereditary"; "Mandy" was the best. I wrote Cosmatos, and begged him to direct a remake of "Excalibur." His vision would work so well with that mythopoeticism. He never responded...
Oh, speaking of the nature of the cult: it's interesting that Nick Cage says it was something Christian, when the cult leader clearly says his philosophy is "Do as thou wilt," which is the main ethos of the church of Satan.
That susperia remake is fantastic.
that's a damn good list, literally the same three for me
@@lynchaxxonn "Mandy" completely turned around my thinking about the acting of Nick Cage, which then led me to the delights of "Vampire's Kiss."
Im so glad you all got the point of Cheddar Goblin! As for my favorite scene in the movie, its the breakdown in the bathroom. Nic's performance was amazing. I started to tear up due to the raw emotions!
Fun fact: The axe-glaive that Nicolas Cage wields is shaped like the L in the logo of Swiss extreme metal legends Celtic Frost.
Panos Cosmatos and Nicholas Cage are becoming my new favourite pairing. 💜
Brilliant review guys.
You can always count on Jess to give us the intellectual meat and potatoes!
YES! Mandy! I've been hoping you guys would review this one. Just made my day.
Fantastic review as always, love it when you cover a stoner movie & glad there are still some great trippy thinkers like this being made. In this veign I reccomend "Possessor uncut"
Also Jess has earned his place in that chair, would be great to see the big 3 all do a review soon.
Fun trivia In a 2018 UK Guardian interview, Nicolas Cage described his performance's inspiration: only just before shooting started, his 14 year marriage to Alice Kim Cage came to 'a sudden end', which was "A shocker for me... didn't see it coming, and those feelings had to go somewhere, so they went into my performance."
Fun trivia Red jokes that his favorite planet is Galactus, the villainous planet eater from Marvel Comics. Nicolas Cage is a noted comic fan. When he changed his name he took it from Marvel Comics hero Luke Cage and has played three separate Marvel heroes across four films.
Fun trivia At the end of the film when Jeremiah is on his knees and begs Red Miller not to kill him, he says. "I'll suck your dick." That's a possible reference to the short story "Killing Nazis" by fellow Greek writer Nikos Kalpakis. There is a scene where a character is on his knees begging for his life and says exactly the same line.
Fun trivia Towards the end of the film, Red tells the cult leader that the psychotic drowns where the mystic swims. This is a variation of a quote by mythologist, Joseph Campbell: "The psychotic drowns in the same waters in which the mystic swims with delight." (Joseph Campbell, "Psychology of the Future: Lessons from Modern Consciousness Research"). Meaning, that there's a fine line between psychosis and spirituality.
Fun trivia Nicolas Cage had an uncredited screaming coach named David Sellers.
If you liked Mandy you should also watch The Color Out Of Space with Nic Cage. It’s a hidden gem if I’ve ever seen one
the van driving by Mandy, that scene just blows me away. absolutely brilliant director, beyond the black rainbow also was spectacular. i'll gladly see everything he does at this rate.
I always remember catching this at the Prince Charles Cinema, where they actually had a competition to win a chrome.layered replica of the "beast" weapon that was on display above the stairway to the lower screen.
Who’s ready for Mandy 2:Attack of the Chedder Goblin?
If Nicolas Cage is in your movie, YOU KNOW he's gonna be the highlight of the film! Mandy is a good movie. But I gotta admit, Cage was the huge reason on why I decided to watch it at first lol Great review as always you guys!
Love this movie. Loved the atmosphere of the first half, very surreal. One cool thing is the scene where Mandy is reading the passage from the book she's reading. It's a description of the end of the movie, where Red is driving through the jagged mountains & the alien looking background. Loved the soundtrack as well.
I said to myself at the start of this video this is like if David Lynch listened to Metal and took acid or DMT. Then Gary mentioned it having a Lynch feel at the end of the review. Awesome.
Oh I really loved this movie.
Simple but great 70s'ish revenge exploitation horror thriller plot executed in such a beautiful, mesmerising, surreal, dreamy and psychedelic way.
I saw someone labeling it art house grind house.
I guess it's a pretty good description.
Also I agree with Jess, it feels like a fantasy flick at times as well.
And the soundrack! It elevates the movie so much. It's beautiful.
It feels like an ambient take on metal. Great stuff.
Cheers guys!
Great review, as always!
the liquid is the lsd, if you turn up the brightness you can see it drip from the guys mask after they guzzle it
Wonderful guys. One of my favorite movies from one of my favorite channels. Keep up the good work my dudes
Omg I forgot it was Thursday! Thanks otsr, have a good one #shelfers 👊
I thought the film was dark but not in the violence but in the Darkness on screen I hope people know what I mean
YES! Great Review of a GREAT FILM. (I was wondering if / when you would get round to this). This film is hands down one of the BEST I have seen in YEARS and I FRIKKIN' LOVE IT!
Thanks for the review!! Great movie!! I just noticed now, after watching your review, that Cage has a Tiger on his shirt in the bathroom scene, so there is that connection to the tiger later in the movie!
Thank you guys
I love it
Yessss! Love this movie! I just watched Mandy for the first time this year and I love it, it gets under your skin just enough and then takes you on a wild ride through the asylum and your tour guide is Nick Cage!! Can't get enough of this movie, who doesn't love a movie where Cage hunts down a Manson esq family and their cennobite biker gang armed with a crossbow named 'The Reaper' and a battle axe straight out of Skyrim that he personally forged?! Fantastic movie! ❤️
I showed this to my wife when it 1st came out,She LOVED IT!
I'm one of the ravers! This film is fucking fantastic. As a 63 year old hippy who back in the day spent many hours in a 'chemically enhanced frame of mind' this movie nails it! And of course, we get THE CAGE. His freakout is a joy to behold - and then he turns into Jason meets Charles Bronson on acid. He had to do that in order to defeat the Cenobite bikers!
As for the cult leader, the director really did his homework. This is obviously based on Charles Manson. Manson had women who did his bidding, a male psychotic sidekick (Tex Watson), he was obsessed with Abraxas (the horn of Abraxas), he was a failed musician, and he had a heavy biker gang among his followers for muscle (the Satan's Slaves). All in all, an absolute masterpiece, and one of the best films ever made....ever!
Love me some Richard Brake
Where is angry Ian?
Ken Barlow's boy has come along way from the the cobbles! He should return to the Rovers and enthrall the resedents of the street to become his new followers!
Deusdeacon goes really deep into the lore & mythology within the film; I highly recommend you guys (and anyone who reads this comment) goes to check out his review 🥰❤️
Everything about Mandy is excellent. The performances, the cinematography and especially the music are amazing. My favorite movie from 2018
I simped so hard for Mandy. What an incredible movie experience.
Thanks for the review as always, will check out this film!
35:40 The film makers must have been inspired by Roger Dean. His artwork features similar weird and wonderful landscapes.
Almost 30k subs !!!
This is definitely one my favorites!
Could you please review the Belko experiment
Thanks,
Dylan
The psychotic drowns where the mystic swims/You're drowning, I'm swimming
Its. My All time. Fav movie over any other movie. I've ever seen
Break out the donuts and milk peeps it's off the shelf reviews time!
Wait a second that’s not Ian
I still want a replica of that axe
Brilliant film and a brilliant review - totally agree!
I ran out and saw this ASAP
You guys should do a review of Slither
Mandy is a very artistic film, a lot of thought was put on the production and writing, the director made a wonderfull job in the use of light and color and every shot have a visual purpose, the cast is great not only Cage but every other character performs very well even the demon bikers and all cast is rememberable
, all those elements of fantasy and horror mixed with a cruel reality make it one of the most evocative film in recent years, a most watch
Cool review guys.
Oh, I have to see this!

Off The Shelf Reviews Please Check Out THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON. It is an excellent feel-good movie.
The Mystic swims where the Lunatic drowns. Right now you’re drowning, and I’m swimming.
Think that’s the quote. Regardless, I liked this film a lot. Between this, Mom & Dad and Color Out of Space, Cage is having a resurgence
It's doors song in visual format.
I was wondering if you guys could review the Scream series at some point? Cheers
Absolutely amazing film, it was such a pleasant surprise watching this for the first time! And it's nice to see Cage still kicking ass in cool movies like this one and Willy's Wonderland.
awesome awesome review sirs! Im gonna try check this movie out!
Nicholas Cage is a good actor
@Sh3p 83 I'll agree in some films he acts really like a novice but can't really call him a bad actor for that matter...
@Sh3p 83 well said !
You should do ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK/L.A.
Just wondering: Have you ever considered reviewing Ashton Kutcher's best movie to date "The Butterfly Effect"?
Hey guys hope you’re doing alright
Loved the movie. Fortunately saw it in cinema.
Great review, i love this movie. :)
I love this film, it really is amazing.
I really liked this movie even though I have only watch it once.
Gary you're hilarious 🤣
Night Owl Merica crew all over this shit
Is this a re-upload? Also Jess, you have to be The Snakerer, you sound near identical 🤣🤣🤣
This movie restored my in Nicolas Cage!
There we're points, which I loved... But it was too slow and too artsy for me... On the whole.
However, I can see what someone else can like...
Maybe I'm just too used to the old videos 🥺
I thought it was great but I can see why some wouldnt like it.
I love this movie
mandy a film where the ghost rider kills joe chill and thomas wayne
Jess is still looking really ill! Should we be worried, at this point? 🥺
what is that tight t-shirt???
Where the hell is Ian?!?
🎵 Iain, come back! You can blame it all on Gary. He was wrong and we can't watch without you. 🎵
👍🎬🎥👊
I really don't mean to be by rude. I don't. But Gary and Iain have such a chemistry. Like I said, not trying to be a dick, but Gary and Iain ❤️❤️❤️
Jess is great. no worries, he knows what he's talking about and he's a lovely reviewer. But I can't help missing Iain cos he's a gay icon.
Starts good then Cage starts acting, fucking awful.
