- The Gospel Pass so named because St Paul walked this way to deliver bibles to the Welsh people. All absolutely true ofcourse:)
It's the highest road in Wales UK and is single track with passing places.
The pass has cattle grids at all entries and exits and there are sheep and wild ponies wondering freely. There are also several parking places and easy access to Hay bluff and other great walks too.

Was nice to meet you on camp 👍 hope you enjoyed wales
Fabulous video footage
Thanks for the inspiration Sandy. I went and rode the Gospel Pass today, Hay on Wye to Abergavenny. It was excellent. I got my timing just right as I didn't encounter another vehicle on the climb, only a very brave lady on a bicycle. When I got down to Capel-y-Finn I met a couple of guy coming the other way who where just about to head up the pass and then three guys on bikes came the same way as me and stopped at the chapel. I really enjoyed the ride so thank you very much for reminding me of a place I have been meaning to visit.
It's a lovely place to ride, glad you enjoyed the Gospel pass
Sandy, what a fantastic ride! The scenery was stunning and it was good to beak the theme by visiting Funky too. I’m already looking forward to seeing part two. Many thanks for the great video. Take care, Jeremy (Broadlander)

@@WiltshireMan cannot wait to see those videos
Still need to get Wales on the list. Great guide brother 👍
Brilliant, I really enjoyed this and can't wait for part two. I gonna put this on my list for places to ride.
Gladickies joined you,you work well together.
A lovely Sunday morning rideout Sandy! I was looking at walks and cycles around that area a couple of days ago with thoughts of cycling Gospel Pass..even if I have to stop to 'take in the scenery' every 20 yards!! After seeing your trip, it's a definite! Looking forward to the Devil's Staircase as I've ridden it pillion several times in the past. Diolch Sandy🏴
Wales never disappoints when it comes to motorcycling.
It's a lovely place Mike, just over 2 hours drive away
I absolutely love learning in your videos!
Stay safe and healthy my friend!
Thanks Dan:)
Thanks, Sandy. It's great to experience these rides with you. Love it. 🙂👍🏍️
Nice video sandy, I'll have to go ride it and see for myself. Stay safe.
Always pleased to see a new Wiltshire Man video.
Thankyou for taking us up there mate, absolutely incredible views.
Hi Sandy, mesmerising scenery and loved the history you gave of the pass, excellent upload, really enjoyed it 😁
Think i need to put that on my Himalayan bucket list 👍
You should definately consider a Himalyan ride to Wales Dave:)
I did the Gospel Pass on Tuesday this week (25th April). It was bright and sunny but chilly. I came from the south and it's worth knowing that if you're coming from the south to Gospel Pass, the roads are not at all good - they're in bad shape, boggy in places and very slippery with runoff from the hills. It also goes on for quite a few miles . If you're approaching from Hay on Wye then the approach roads are in much better condition and it's not as long a ride to get there.
Another thing to note; I used a sat-nav device to find the pass and it took me to a dead end on a farm several miles away to the south. The lady farmer obviously knew where I wanted to be and asked if I was looking for the pass, so I can only conclude it's not the first time she has come across lost motorcyclists on her farm looking for the pass. She was very good about it, bless her, and she even gave me directions on how to find the pass.
In any case, despite getting lost and the bad roads, it was totally worth it, the views are amazing from the top of the pass and on a clear day visibility goes on for miles and miles. I've not seen views like that since riding the Cat & Fiddle last year.
@ Ralph's Moto Diary. I couldn't agree more! I watched the video and read your comment early this morning. Most the motorcyclists seem to do it from the Abergavenny end up to Hay on Wye. (Incidentally for the scenery and views it is the best way) If I was going to do it again I start at Hay on Wye and ride up to the highest point, turn around on the 'car park' and come back and do it the other way. It only takes about 15 minutes each way (as you know) Absolutely stunning up there today in the sunshine. PS I should have listened to you, but I thought it was a longer route. (Bike ended up filthy and I came very close to dropping it when the front slid on rubble and mud) Goodness knows how they manage on racing cycles. 🤔
@@paullee6663 thanks for your comment on my, er, comment. Glad you managed to stay upright despite the slippery conditions - slow and steady definitely wins for this route.
Thank you very much Sandy for the wonderful video.
Certainly help bringing back fond memories of the 70s; then living in Llangorse Village and working for Welsh Water Authority and later Powys County Highways Department in Brecon Town.
Looking forwards to whatever coming up next.
Regards from Malaysia.
Another great video brother
Cheers Sandy enjoyed the video 👍🏍
Nice video as usual Sir, the Gospel pass is stunning. Especially when it opens up to reveal the big view. I'll be looking forward to the next one.
Its a beautiful part of the world Sandy. Was in the area last month during a failed attempt at wildcamping the Beacons Way. Had to abandon half way due to a turned ankle and my walking partner had chest trouble due to the after effects of covid. Were both going back in August to finish off walking from Abergavenny to Storey Arms.
Sorry to hear of your failed attempt to walk the Beacons way Bill, hopefully you will succeed next time, if you want another member to join you let me know
Nice one Sandy :)
What positive comment can I leave on this video ? Let's see now. Well now. Ok. Hmm. Here's something : Nice bike. Nice view. Nice biker. Nice Welsh ponies, nice day and have a nice day.
Wow. Really enjoyed this video. I've lived just outside Cardiff for 95% of my life and never knew about this pass. Definitely on my todo list this year after my Scotland trip next week 👍
Enjoyable ride Sandy and nice that you found Darren. The Llanthony Priory is a wonderful ruin sat on its own in beautiful Welsh countryside, part of its cellars are now a Bar with camping opposite, there's a resivour/big lake in a nearby valley with a bothy. It's not Darren's shop Sandy it's Leigh's shop.
Therapy. Thank you.
Loved this video so much :)
Excellent video. Off to walk the West Highland Way next week having been inspired by yourself and Barking Badger.
Then off to the Adventure Bike Riding festival at Ragley Hall. You may find it interesting. Keep up the good work.
Speaking of dark sky I forgot to get up and see the 4 planets lined up and meteor shower this morning. Great video bro those horses sure like to leave their calling card on the roadway. Safe travels
11:21 those ordinance survey maps are awesome , he does have everything you need .
Hi Sandy, good to see the Gospel Pass has reopened, it was closed last Autumn when I went over due to a landslide and half the road disappearing! Builth Wells where your heading is pronounced "Bilth Wells" Cracking video as always, look forward to part 2. Keep up the good work!😊👍
I came across one of your videos on paramotoring as I'm looking to start a training course on it, now I'm watching motorcycling in Wales and thinks its fantastic. Your an inspiration Sandy, thanks for the videos. PS I think Dickie lives around the corner from me, very small world.
Dickie lives off Grange drive
@@WiltshireMan Must be your address then, I'm off headlands Grove and the surrounding area is very familiar. I won't say where for confidentially reasons 🤐👍
great video as usual. but watched your tour of Scotland again From 2020. most enjoyable.. going to make the effort this summer
Stunning area, unspoilt & beautiful. Great video Mr W, looking forward to the next one. Another stunning area you might like to try is the gwaun valley by Fishguard. Plenty of campsites on the coast or a great one next to a pub in the gwaun valley.
Never heard of the Gwaun valley before, I'll have to do some research:)
@Wiltshireman. Highly recommend it Mr W, very peaceful and beautiful.
Love riding the Gospel Pass but usually cycling. It also features on the opening and closing credits of Antiques Road Show with the Citroen 2CV going up and over it with a grandfather clock sticking out the roof. Shame the visibility wasn't so great on your second filing attempt. Don't you have the GoPro App on your phone so you can see what your GoPro is filming and adjust accordingly if necessary? Glad you were out on your V-Strom. You should use it more.
The Devil's Staircase is steep. The valley leading up to it is pretty spectacular.
It's pronounced 'Bilth', but as I am an English man I am happy to be corrected. A few of us tried to ride this road a few weeks ago, but it was closed. Best ridden in the summer months!
Thanks for the interesting video, I never knew about that Pass. Just one niggly little point if I may - Funky Prepper showed you a rucksack and on it was the name CRIB GOGH, it should be CRIB GOCH. Just a very minor niggle and I'm sure the rucksacks are excellent but it might put some people off buying them due to the spelling error. Love the sound of your v-strom twin engine.
You've got sharp eye's Paul:)
@@WiltshireMan thanks for replying, I do like to study your videos. By the way my name's not Paul it is Berwyn. All the best.
Cracking video as always Sandy. One thing I'm often curious of on your trips is how you pack your panniers? Love to get my hands on one of those Crib Goch spine friendly backpacks as well
Those packs looked great Oscar
This a a fantastic start to a video series Sandy. You went through all of the extra effort that it wound up taking to get us a great view of it all. Most would have just said that I'm sorry but the camera was not at the best angle so you missed it. Not you, you just had to return and do it again in order to make it fit up to your standards. That wasn't really something you had to do, but. kudos to you for doing it my friend. Very interesting and entertaining video as always. And it was a pleasure to see Darren (Funky Prepper) with his new shop as a bonus. I am looking forward to the next one. Thanks again.
Thanks Terry, Sometimes second best isn't good enough and whilst I was there I just had to go back
Don't think I've done that, have to give it a go soon.
Hello nice video good work. I am looking at doing this ride this year. I would just like to know the route you took. And how far is the devils staircase from gospels pass. I have never done tour riding so I am new to this please be kind in comments
Wondered where the FP had gone.
First and proud of it 🤣👌
I think you'll find Adam and Eve came before you.
Another great video, what make is your helmet? Looks like the Bell Mx9? Any good?
Its a synchrony duo, I like it and its cheap
@@WiltshireMan thanks for the reply 👍
👍
I've very few regrets in this life. Of those that abide, the regret of distances that prevent us from meeting, and possibly joining you and Dickie on a grand Himalayan excursion, will linger as a debt unpaid.
And the chance to ride around Wales:) It is a lovely country
Hello,,.
Hey ya'll.
sorry can’t see a thing
1% Welsh, 😂
pronounced.....bilf wells
The make sheds there:)
