i used to watch you on the food network when i was little with my grandma. i had the times memorized and everything. she has alzheimer’s now and is currently being tested for covid. i just wanted to thank you for these videos. i can’t explain how much comfort they’ve brought me.

Love all these videos. I have followed you since you first started. Have several cook books as well. You always make me feel that I'm sitting right there on a stool shooting the breeze while discussing growing up southern and cooking up something wonderful. From one ole southern gal to another..... you inspired me to write a family/ ancestry ( I'm a big ancestry researcher) cookbook filled with photos, stories, family history, bios and recipes, especially the family reunion favs from all my sister-in-laws. Made sure to place one that was written in their own hand since no one handwrites anymore. Have one to all the brothers and sisters (12). Called it "Recipes and Memories". Thank you you proving that southern girls with a southern accent are beautiful, smart and talented. Love and best dishes to you too. I have had that recipe since 1975. I make it every Xmas. I call it Lois because, that was the name of my coworker who made it and gave me the recipe.

The cake turned out beautifully and evenly browned ! You could just about top it with anything you like ! But, the sour cream and sugar sounds delicious, too !

I’ve been thinking of this cake. I used to make a version 45yrs ago and still have sherry in ships decanter..whenever I see that sherry, I think of this. Thx so much!
Waaaa! I was so disappointed when Paula didn’t make the topping and then eat a slice!!! Her house has such a cheery atmosphere and you feel like you are really in her kitchen!

My aunt Goldie raised chickens 🐔 up into her 90s , she always had fresh eggs on counter , her home always smelled of fresh bread and pies

My great grandmother always used a very good swirl of sherry every night and she was 103 when she died ❤
Add lemon juice to the brown sugar/sour cream mixture. and it takes it to a whole nother level. We used to serve it on fruit and berries in the French Restaurant I worked in. Everybody RAVED!

OMG! I have that same recipe from the late 60's! The only difference was it called for buttery flavored oil and, when cooled, dusted it with sifted powdered sugar. It was such a simple recipe that produced a moist, yummy cake. I also baked it in two loaf pans, dusted with powdered sugar and sliced it to place on holiday gift and dessert platters.
This cake looks delicious beyond measure. I want to try this soon, with the sour cream topping, or maybe a cream cheese glaze.... yummm! ⚡️💖⚡️

Paula, I was told by an old lady next door, if you fill a pint glass with water. Put the egg in, if it sinks it good, if it hovers in the glass it needs to be used. If it floats to the top, bin it, it's no good!! Tip from an old lady back in the UK!! Keep up the good work 👌

I always leave my eggs out, in a bowl on the counter, I never wash them, until I’m ready to use them, once you wash the bloom off, you’ll have to use them right away, if not they can get bacteria in them... I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the .. Quarantine Videos... and the new cookbooks,... I Love them ... I love the colored pictures.

My mama uses a package of instant vanilla pudding in her chocolate chip banana bread. It is the absolute best!
Before eggs are washed (as in fresh from hen) keep at room temp. Purchased eggs must be refrigerated.
I'm going to make this for my son because he loves cakes.

Cute video. Everything we (your viewers) love. I don't drink liquor but this does sound good. Wouldn't buttering the pan be a more foolproof method than spraying since sticking to the pan is of course a big concern...Presentation does need jazzing up. I wish you would have shown something in that regard, beyond just reading what was suggested. The cake stand is so pretty. I realize you're doing multiple videos/recipes at once, but it would still be nice to see the tasting of the foods. It kind of undermines the videos, cutting them short, in my opinion.
PS. I love Paula's Palace. :) Those tall grand French Doors...And of course there's a Gate to pass through out front!
We always used to put eggs on the counter not the fridge in the UK. Not now though as the eggs produced are simply not he same tbh.
Although if you get fresh eggs from a farm, you can put them on the counter not the fridge. But buy them from the fridge, put them in the fridge.

Dear Paula, I love this recipe. I'm trying to punch up my corn bread (something that my husband loves--well I do too). So I usually used the Jiffy corn bread mix (2 boxes) 2 eggs and 2/3's cup buttermilk. Would love some ideas Thank you. Kim-in Melbourne, FL
Try jalapeños, corn, sour cream, and/or cheese!
Kim Danbert I like to add raisins to my cornbread occasionally. I plump them the night before in sherry, orange juice, ginger ale, or any beverage that's sweet. Then I drain them and add them to the cornbread batter.

Years ago the decoration of a chicken shaped wire basket was for the eggs, to sit on the counter, not just a decoration.

What's a good sherry to use? Do you ever use a deco Bundt pan?
Yes, I have a few deco pans I use. And you can use any sherry except cooking sherry. It doesn't have to be expensive by any means!
I've the star of David deco Bundt pan!!!!
For an inexpensive Sherry, Fairbanks is a good brand. It's a California Sherry and is available in dry, medium, and sweet varieties. Total Wine has it. I'd stay away from any Sherry from New York State, as it's dominated by an "off" flavor.
What can I use instead of sherry in this recipe?
