How Does Fumigation Work? The Whole Process As I Saw It

  • Whether you have termites, cockroaches, or bedbugs, fumigation is one way to get rid of those critters. We could have super heated our home, but fumigation was more effective in killing everything we needed killed. So, if you're looking for how to prepare for fumigation of cockroaches, termites, or bedbugs, you should get the info you need in this video.
    In this video, I talk about the process, showing how fumigation works. I talk about how much fumigation costs including the hidden fumigation costs like staying in an AirBnB and the expense of doing an additional treatment following the tent removal. In our case, we had a choice of two types of fumigation. One was superheating the house, the other was gassing it. We went with the latter method of fumigation. While I try to cover many of the termite tenting faq's in this video, I know there may be more questions that come to mind that I didn't cover. I'll consider making another video about fumigation if the need arises.
    The main preparation items were to get a place for my dog for 4 days, bag all food in the house with double bagging techniques, including the food in the freezer, and find a place to stay during the fumigation.
    One of the reasons we chose fumigation over heating the house was the fact that during fumigation, you can leave all your goods behind in the house. With super heating your house, you have to remove a ton of stuff. For instance, you have to remove all lipsticks, ammunition, oil based products, paintings, and so on. With fumigation, I was able to leave all of that behind, some of it in protective bags.
    After the fumigation, it was safe to re-enter after the house had been aired out and a 24 hour re-entry notice was given by the fumigation company. They give it to you after they've entered the house and measured the concentrations of the fumigant. There's no residue after fumigation. Outside, most of my plants' leaves died, but the plants did not. It took about 2 months for the new leaves to start showing up.

    Thank you so much for this information. My house is getting fumigated soon and I'm getting nervous about it. Mostly about burglary. I have security cameras inside and outside, but I don't have them recording all the time. The best I can do is check it as often as I can I guess. I also won't be around to check the progress, so that's another thing that's making me nervous. I'm surprised they let you keep the food in the house and also provided you with bags. I live in Florida and they told me that I have to remove all food and medicine from the house.

      Each company is different. During this time, unless the time has passed already, buy a sign that says "property under video surveillance" in your front yard. That will show that your property is "being watched" during the fumigation. That sign has helped me many times during my fix and flips while under construction in some of the roughest neighborhoods, even!

    A few questions
    1. What were the bags you used to seal your food? Were they provided by the company?
    2. Did you have to cover your beds/couches with tarps?
    3. Did you have to take your clothes with you or wash them after?
    4. Did you turn off your electricity when you left or was it just the gas?
    5. Were there dead bugs when you returned to the property that you needed to clean? Were there any alive that you noticed when you returned?
    I'm trying to prepare myself to get my house fumigated and I'm struggling.
    Some places seem to say that no action with clothes/linens is required whereas others say to tent/bag it, even so far as to remove the mattresses.

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  3 роки тому +2

      The bags were provided by the company. They were just thick bags tied and zip tied, then bagged within a bag (2 bags for each stack of food). Nothing else was covered or bagged. No tarps. You could wash your clothes, but not necessary unless they were infested beforehand, then you wash to get the dead bug bodies out. Electricity remained on. There were a couple of bugs here or there, but not many. Spiders survive for the most part, as I remember it, but we didn't have many of those. Plants died at the foliage but lived at the roots. They all grew back.
      Good luck!

    Hey, you 😊
    A quick question please…do fumigators go through your personal items in closets, drawers, (or plastic storage containers of kids toys, and baby clothing/ no food…etc), before they clear the house for fumigation. And, what specific items will they be looking for that might cause harm or negatively affect the fumigation process.
    Thanks. 😊

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  2 роки тому +3

      They do not go through your personal belongings if they are a reputable company. The only reason for them to go in the house is to make sure you have all internal doors open, outside doors and windows open. They'll check to make sure you bagged your food properly, too. Other than that, if you are concerned, I suggest staying on the property until the crew is finished like I did and asking your neighbors to keep an eye out for funny business. You can also set up a wifi camera inside your house in various places.... or just hire a reputable company 😆

      As long as your fumigation follows their proper protocols, you won't have an issue. They're required, at least in my state, to give you a safe to re-enter notice. In order to give that, they must go through and measure what's in the air. Fumigation companies are in the habit of killing... bugs, not people. 😀

  • @davidsprague6578
    @davidsprague6578 3 роки тому +9

    I work for my family's company and we do fumigations. It's worth noting that we can also turn these things off ourselves
    Also note most companies don't use paper signs.
    Now if you look the long things you pointed at that are filled with sand we call sand snakes those are usually hanged on the tarp using clamps
    The water hoses we fill we call water snakes
    Now with the has it's based on the size of your home and the type of gas
    Also no we shouldn't be covering your plants the gas will kill most plants which is why we go behind them the reason those people's plants didn't die is because those plants are extremely resistant to the gas.
    Now different companies do things differently our trucks have cranes because we use much larger and thicker tarps. Now with connecting tarps you wanna pull them together and roll the tarps as tightly as possible which can often rip the skin off your fingers.
    Believe it or not those bags you used cost the company about 50 cents a piece.
    Now I'm actually really surprised they let you hang out inside while they were renting just because it's a liability issue.
    Also if you give me an email I can send you an image of our reentry notices so you can have that image for your channel
    Your incorrect about how the areation period works but I can quickly explain that
    Now it's 12 hours the tarp needs to be on the building for the gas to do it's jobs at least that's for termites
    Those gas cannisters have 125 pounds of gas which a house like yours likely uses around 40 tho that's not really my job.
    The gas only really takes about 6 hours to dissapate when the doors are open however because of how much it costs for someone to sit there the whole time they usually close it up for 24 hours and have someone clear it the next day

      As a general practice, it is always best to ask the pest control company as they may have a different suggestion than mine. For my experience, we bagged all the food in the fridge and left it in the fridge as I recall. We double bagged all food and left it in the house. The fumigation company provided the bags and the ties. You might not have to worry about anything canned in the pantry, but you'll need to bag spices and bagged foods like bread and cereal, in my understanding. We left our refrigerator 🏃‍♀️

      If you have cameras set up around your house, they still work. You can even get a nanny cam and place it somewhere near the entrance so if someone does come in, you can see what they're doing. Other than that, you just have to make a presence. You could even post a sign saying the house is under video surveillance. how far from the tented house should comestible plants be?

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  2 роки тому

      My understanding is that as long as the plant is not under the tent, comestible plants are fine...however, I would consult with the fumigation company to confirm. All edible items inside the tent have to be sealed inside plastic bags. The tent is enclosed and they use sand/water pressure by their weight to hold the edges of the tent down to the ground. I believe the poison rises, so the question would be is it possible for the poison to enter the root system of the plants through subterranean pressure from the gas above? I don't know. If I was concerned, I'd ask my fumigation company. I also don't know how long it takes for the fumigant to leave whatever it contaminates.

    effective for blow flies?

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  3 роки тому

      I would imagine fumigation would kill blow flies, but you'll want to know why they're there in the first place. They like rotting flesh. If you have a blow fly issue, do you have road kill close by or dead animals under the house or keep your trash cans too close to the home? If you fumigate and you haven't taken care of the underlying issue, they'll likely return.

      As long as you don't have to go through the tent to get back there or out of there, and the tent is installed correctly, you should be fine.

      @@RealEstateInvestingUnmasked I suppose it depends on what you are treating and the dosage being used. Bedbugs require almost 2x the dosage of drywood termites for example, and formosan termites require 4x the dosage.
      I only ever did fumigations on homes with severe bedbug infestations and we never had a plant inside the tarp survive.
      I would guess if you are doing bedbug treatments and having plants survive, then they are either super hardy plants, or some significant portion of that plant is outside of the tent.
      Or maybe you are using some other fumigant? Was it sulfuryl flouride?

    Will this process kill rodents?

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  2 роки тому +1

      If the rodent is in under the tent, it dies. If it enters the same entry point as before it was tented after the tent is removed, the issue may come back. So if you're renting for rodents, you'll want to make sure they tent and seal all entry points as best as possible. Good luck!

    • @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked
      @RealEstateInvestingUnmasked  2 роки тому

      24 hours from the time the fumigation company releases the gasses out of the tent... you get a re-entry notice after 24 hours, but this may change depending on the company and the method used to disperse the gas.
