Obviously Leon and Connor have to be signed for basically any price. However the issue is that we have another 15 mill stuck up with Campbell and Nurse...
I dont think signing Leon before he goes to UFA is that much of a priority. He's going to wait to see what McDavid does next summer and then I think they'll sign them both if they want to stay.
With McDavid coming to this situation next year, I’m not letting Leon get to July.1, 2025 without being signed or traded. I love the player and want him signed but I’m not leaving it to free agency. As an organization you cannot afford to lose this player with no return.
Realistically you can't let him get to the end of the summer without being signed or traded. Going into the season without a deal being done is a huge risk for the Oilers.
It depends on what they want. If they wanna win the cup Edmonton is as good as anywhere. I mean roll the dice on a half dozen franchises but Edmonton is in the mix right now. Largely because of Leon and Connor but this year was especially good and they know it because their play is bolstered by a real team, with steady coaching and prospects. But if they want the money. If they wanna live somewhere else. If they dont get along with the team or hate the travel or wanna live by the ocean etc etc.then offering 20 wont get them. Like Gaudreau and Tkachuk if they wanna go then negotiations are pointless and you get to ride it out one last time.
What prospects? and u realize edmonton will pay him the max right? nobody can offer 8 years. the money will be in edmonton. and im a flames fan so this is not biased
He’s a fantastic player don’t get me wrong, but without Mcdavid I think you minus 30-40 points a year off his totals. Drai is well aware of how lucky he is to play with Mcdavid and wants to keep it that way I’m sure.
If you want to win the cup take a 3 year deal at a pay cut Get better players to come play with Win the cup than get paid If you take 14 million a year You don’t really want the cup
Leon’s already taken a pay cut for the past 8 years. He’s been playing on $8m USD a year which is a steal. There’s no way he should be paid less than Nurse lol
No, that would be too predictable and too easy for both that player and management, it would make too much sense knowing exactly where you stand in the system, therefore it can't happen.
Leon will kick the can down the road, he'll want to stay alongside McDavid as long as possible. Leon knows his best chance at being the best be can be, requires McDavid.
Better to sign him as soon as possible since if he walks, McDavid will also walk and that team will be in the basement for decades, considering the Oilers are terrible when it comes to drafting and developing players
Why are you oilers fans hating on Ryan asking the obvious questions? You can pretend it will all go your way and end up in another rebuild. Take it from a flames fan things can unravel quickly. For tax alone it would be enticing to play in the USA. The travel is another….
Ugh Rishaug is so arrogant. This decision won't be made separately. You think Drai and McD never talked about this? I think they have a pretty good understanding already of what they want to do. Whether it aligns with the oilers or not who knows.
So they resign Draisa 14 Mill and MacDavid at 16+ mill at the end of next season. So 1/3 of salary cap in two players? Not unless they get rid of Nurse at 9.25 and good luck with that unless they throw in the first and second round picks for 2-3 years? W
By the time McDavid’s contract would start the cap will be $100 million. So less than 1/3. Is it a lot? Hell ya, but you don’t have Tavares and Marner taking up a lot of your cap. You have the best player in the world and one of the top 3 players in the league
You think the cap going up 20 mil in the next season, historicly it avg is about 5 percent....also do you know the collective bargain agreement ends at the ends in 2 years.
The Oilers cannot afford to have the NHL’s two best players in their prime and not suffer in other areas of the team. Trade Leo or let him go and get two 6 million dollar players and improve the team’s depth.
If Leon resigns that is a good sign that mcdavid will resign. You know they are talking behind the scenes

He will sign, I will smile.
Leon is no where near as good as you think he is without Mc David !!
He’s a fantastic player don’t get me wrong, but without Mcdavid I think you minus 30-40 points a year off his totals. Drai is well aware of how lucky he is to play with Mcdavid and wants to keep it that way I’m sure.

can a team sign a player to a percentage of salary cap? as the cap goes up, player's salary goes up by percentage in contract?
No

This year was their best chance to win - they'll never get such an easy run to the cup again. Run as fast as you can Leon.
Leon will kick the can down the road, he'll want to stay alongside McDavid as long as possible. Leon knows his best chance at being the best be can be, requires McDavid.
Leon without McD is just a good player not “one of the best players on the planet”. It’s in everyone’s interest if he stays in Edmonton.
14 mil 🤯

He is going to wait until Marner gets a deal and then base it off that

Have fun signing Bouchard 💀
Losing Leon would suck soooooooooooo bad for the Oilers.
14M is probably where it starts... but what he truly wants is what is going to be interested. I think he walks but who really knows.
I think you'll see Leon shop elsewhere, then Mcdavid will follow. Too many negatives like the city itself, taxes, climate etc. Most will look south.
Alberta is a tax haven lol
@@QasimGee you obviously don't make much with that statement.

Bouchard is up same time as Mcdavid... should have signed Bouch to longer term

@@ODA2331 historically speaking, are you including the pandemic years or no?
Draisaitl is good as gone. And Connor is gone after this next season.
He should resign, I just don’t know how the other teams could afford what he’ll need over 7 years, that 8th year is crucial.
The Oilers cannot afford to have the NHL’s two best players in their prime and not suffer in other areas of the team. Trade Leo or let him go and get two 6 million dollar players and improve the team’s depth.
McDavid will sign in LA as a UFA
Man Ryan is man who is empty on top. How can you put numbers together for Leon you are reporter not oilers management.
Sports fans are the worst kind of nerds on the planet
😂
Here goes Rishaug trying to push Leon out…. He’s going to be talking Draisaitl trade all summer
Lose him. He's a floater with no heart or passion. Let him go make his stupid TV commercials for the Leafs crowd
