This should be something they can do right from the get go. The higher level modification should be how many they can have going at once. Especially after they get magic, this just makes sense.
You get teleported to the desert, no one knows what's going on. The Ranger communes with the land, and learns what lives there, and decides what will be a threat. When they awaken from their trance, they can lead you through it as though they have lived there their whole lives. This is what makes them a Ranger, and not a woodsman or whatever.

It's really funny to me that the class based around exploration is most optimized to never go out exploring past their comfort zone
Edit: some of you have surprisingly strong feelings about this and yet no one has mentioned that terrain doesn't actually make or break anything combat or damage wise. Expertise on Intelligence and Wisdom checks about the terrain and tracking gives you exact numbers and sizes of creatures, the rest is a lot of travel and foraging perks but I'm sure most DMs skip travel and food mechanics because they are BORING (how good for a story would it be if you got lost on your way somewhere or got food poisoning?). It literally is "I'm an expert o long as we don't stop being in a forest" all that hunting sense goes away the second the soil changes. You go from a forest to a grassland and can no longer track down creatures, it's a really funny shut down of abilities roleplay wise. "Hey, guys, can we go back to the forest? I'm really cool there"
Some of y'all are acting like I'm attacking ranger or that I don't know how to play it and have fully missed the point of what terrain does.
Folks, if I WANTED to drag Ranger I would bring up Primeval Awareness

      @Nuggette 8 місяців тому +365

@@thomascook3336 I did and here's what you get: 3 whole favoured terrains. Thank god there's only three in the whole game right?
      also for Tasha's:
you get 1 expertise and 2 languages, meaning you could've just go rogue and get twice as much.
5 extra feet of movement and two new movement speeds, which is genuinely useful.
D8+Wis temp hp 4 to 6 times per day. Which is a nice bonus, but it would sure sting if there was a class that has an aoe version of this, with no daily limit, that they get at 3rd level.
Tasha's did help, but just like with their one dnd redesign (at least the original one), I am sad that the way people try to fix ranger is by no longer making them focus on the outdoors.

Don't forget that at level 10, rangers get the impressive ability to camouflage themselves, if they have naturally occurring materials to hide themselves with AND have a tree or wall to press themselves against, by spending a full minute and then staying completely still, taking no movement or actions. This gives a +10 to stealth checks! Meanwhile, Pass Without Trace is a 2nd level spell that gives +10 stealth to your whole party, allows them to move, and is accessible to rangers as early as 5th level.

@@JohnnyGoble-oi8ie I mean i cannot even fathom a situation where a ranger would be better than a caster.
A horde of 20 goblins running at you ? -Ranger can shoot twice, or use a spell to kill maybe 5, 10 at best if they group up just right.
-Wizard will fry all those goblins, and the other 20 that were hiding in a small forest 100ft away with Meteor Shower.
There is a patrol of enemies coming, and you need to hide quick.
-Ranger can try to use Pass without Trace to increase their stealth check, which might still fail cause the paladin has plate mail and thus gets dis adv on the check
-Wizard or Sorcerer will just upcast invisibility on the party, no checks required to stay hidden.
By some unknown reason, the party has been thrown in a foreing jungle.
-Ranger can only weep cause his favourite terrain is forest and snow mountains, so he can roll survival checks to maybe being able to point North
-Wizard will cast either Teleport, to just get back where ever you want to. Fly, to just go over the tree tops to take a look whats around them. Or just Wish that the party would be back home..
Please im actually curious, can you give me a single example where a ranger would be better than a caster ?

But for resource supply, it really depends on the DM. If the campaign is super combat heavy with low amounts of long rests, or there are encounters that are difficult enough to drain all the party's resources, then a consistent low resource cost class would shine and show its true value.
But for certain classes like ranger or monk, they just lack any of the resource efficiency of the martial classes, while still only having low value abilities.

For example I had a rouge druid multiclass player. So I gave him a ghostly raven that only he could see and communicate with. Over time he gain the ability to see through its eye, have it pass through walls and by lv 16 once a day he could some a hoard of ghostly animal to torment the enemy.

This is a common problem in the community where people think Ranger is just Ranged damage, but in reality they can pull off some really busted melee builds like dual wield Rapiers with a wolf companion that has prone as part of its base kit, or Horizon Walker planeshift and teleportation shenanigans. Hell, Ranger is named after a Range of fields or mountains or nature that they oversee, not the fact that they use Ranged damage

"I'm a hundred feet away, so I shoot him. Oh, I'm using the -5/+10. Annnnnnd....23. Second attack is the same. 20. Magic bow with special stuff to make it hurty hurt. Total damage is....60. I also move back 30 feet." Honestly, Rangers are amazing once you learn them properly, which takes no time. They should be good at environmental adaptation, so play them as such.

I heard a DnD story where an archer had a magic quiver that combined all arrows placed within it into one arrow. Best part, he only fired once, during the end battle. The arrows divided in the air, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, until the land was covered in the shade of thousands of arrows.

I highly recommend to any new DMs out there to provide people who want to play ranger a higher than normal amount of magics items, OR let them take Hunter conclave sub-class abilities as feats. It lets them feel like they aren’t just worse bow fighters.

To be fair, with a good build as a Gloomstalker ranger you can be a ranged assassin rogue and snipe a bunch of people to death in the dark. My favorite breaking of the game was when a DM allowed Avariels and I just flew in the air as a Shadow sorcerer/Gloomstalker and just sniped the enemies because they had put a small patch of darkness at the edge of the arena that the enemies couldn’t actually get rid of to reveal my character. Was very funny at the time because I hadn’t tried it before
