The wife and I traveled in a motor home for 2 years, and I was always asking people what tools they thought were must haves. We are curious about getting into sailing, and here is the best "must-have tools" video I have ever seen. Thanks for this!!!

You have a great tool kit there. One thing you are missing is a product that Danger Stu uses
in Australia. It is an aerosol engine starting spray called " Star Ya Bastard " made by the Nulon company.
They also make a Spray Lubricant to break old rusted screws and bolts called " Shift Ya Bastard ".
My favorite is a tool you need to celebrate after the job for opening Long Necked Beer Bottles
called " Open Ya Bastard ".

As I watched you go through all your tools, I was going to suggest my most prized tool in my collection. My Fein Multimaster with all the attachments including tight space sanding pads, cutters, etc. then I seen you have a multimaster type tool. That tool is the first tool I pull out on most projects because it eliminates a lot of other tools in the collection or makes the job easier, or less mess as it cuts with vibration as opposed to a spinning blade. Love it!
Keith, really enjoy your channel. Thank you for taking me along on all your journeys. It was my dream to do what you’re doing after retirement and the BIG C
came for a visit. Was given 60 days to live in 2016! The treatment almost killed me but I am still here! Unfortunately, the collateral damage made the dream disappear but thanks to you and a few other channels, I get to live through your videos and for that, I thank you Sir!

From a landlubber and non mechanic, Keith taught me two things. First, I wouldn't be very handy on board a boat unless you need computer parts put together. And secondly, I always thought putting holes in boats is a bad idea, but nearly every tool Keith showed us was for putting holes in boats!

So when it comes to buying things I live in the world of crap.
I currently have 8 unopened Harbor Freight Multi-Meters . They regularly put out coupons to get certain items FREE.
I have a Harbor Freight Angle Grinder i bought 6 years ago for $12.00 with a discount coupon. It is still running great.

After owning a project car for the past 6 years I have gotten into the habit of always carrying my tools in my car. All the way from jack stands to a socket set, to my tool pouch and then carrying extra parts like sensors, gaskets, an extra alternator, tire patch kits, etc. No matter how good of a mechanic you are things always happen on the road, or in your case, the sea.
It's always good to be prepared for any circumstance that may arise, and myself already having anxiety it gives me the piece of mind knowing that I can fix most problems while on the road without having to be home or at a service shop. It also helps when you're your own mechanic. :)
It always helps having a mulitmeter on board, and it also helps knowing how to use one without having to google anything. I started using Fluke Multimeter's while I was a Telecomm Lineman in the Canadian Forces and will always use Fluke and 3M Products. Great and reliable.
Hydraulic crimpers... spoiled. lol You use a lot of the tools I used doing work in the forces. Ah, the Klein fish tape. Klein was another heavily use product in the forces. We used the fish tape for all of our cat5 in structured building communications on bases, it's cat6 now but same principle. And cable ties(zip ties) are everyone's best friend for tidiness.
Your'e right, it isn't rocket science, which is why I am always wondering why people need to call any of the trades, like a plumber, electrician, HVAC, framer, drywaller, painter, mechanic, etc. to do basic construction and service around the house. Being self-sufficient and being able to do everything yourself (I'm a Plumber by trade now) is a huge time and money saver. And at the end of the day, you know it was done right because you did it YOURSELF.
And Fluke Mulitmeter's are NOT cheap btw, so the usage of relatively cheap is just that... relative.

Keith, sent u an email on May 9th about the following tool. Thought it could help u tremendously in tight places.
Keith, I thought this tool would come in very handy on your yacht. Called an Endoscope, Borescope, and or snake camera. Many different manufacturers so look @ different options. These are fantastic to troubleshoot something that is very hard to reach. They are waterproof, lighted, have different attachments like hooks and magnetized. You can look @ HD pics or even take video of the issue. You could then even email the manufacturer what the problem is and attach pics and/or vids. They work with smartphones and some now have their own led screens. Thought this could help u as another tool in your arsenal to diagnose problems.
Take care and good luck sailing!
I enjoy your family videos tremendously!

Watching you repair everything from soup to nuts on your boat, I wondered what tools you had on hand. Having the right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. Though your video looks like a lot of tools, in my opinion you presented a pretty lean list of must have tools. Thanks.

As a Marine Diesel Technician for over 10 years I'm impressed with your tool kit you have onboard. A couple of things that come to mind that you didn't mention was a couple of different size pipe wrenches, a large assortment of hose clamps, pipe dope, and you didn't mention box wrenches? Also look into bahco 8in adjustable alligator wrench. The funny looking end works great for getting off rounded bolts and small pipe. I carry one in my back pocket everyday and have fixed more boats with that one tool than I could count

Great video! It's always important to carry a variety of tools even if you're not handy yourself. People often say they don't need tools if they don't know what to use them for. If you're a long way from help, it's amazing the skills ppl can learn when you talk them thru it over the phone or email, as long as they've got the tools with them. Also, if someone comes to help, if you've got the tools they might be able to get you going again. Knowledge is learnt, but you need tools to implement it...

I found this entire video really interesting. Keith, I'm curious why you prefer the soft shackle? Is it esthetics? Is it that you avoid corrosion that would happen on metal? Is it that you have fun making them (your version of "crafting" :D)? Is it the ease with which you can replace them, and make them exactly to size, when they wear out and there's no need to order the part and all the hassle that goes with that? One, all, or none of the above?

Keith it also comes with a coil clamp on pick up acc. I didn't see in yours. I like having the screw on type back probes for checking harnesses when needed. Good choice though big guy!

Good tips on tool kit for boats. better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Of course with reasonable limits....don't need 5 needle nose pliers... Power tools should be common battery...either Ryobi, or Dewalt or other. Don't forget a good bolt cutter in case you need to cut away rigging in case of de-masting. A good electrical kit, and know how to use basic DVM skills are essential...
Thanks for addressing this topic Keith.
