Gladys recorded “Heard It Through The Grapevine” a year before Marvin Gaye. Marvins version got the radio play and attention, but please give Gladys Knight a listen doing it!

This then 11-year old white girl growing up on Long Island bought this album when it came out in 1973 and wore the grooves off of it. Gladys was (and is) one of my few female singing idols and I have followed and loved her for 50 years. I FINALLY got to see her live in concert in 2018 and paid for a front row seat right up to the stage. At the end of the show, the Empress graciously went down the apron of the stage from right to left, shaking hands and collecting flowers and taking a moment to speak to those of us lucky enough to be that close to her. To have just a moment to tell her how influential her singing has been on my own and to shake her hand was an experience and honor I will never forget.

Gladys Knight & the Pips were a great R&B/soul/funk family music group that started out in the 50's & had hits over 4 decades. They had a lot of great songs such as "Every Beat Of My Heart", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Nitty Gritty", "Friendship Train", "If I Were Your Woman", "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "I Feel A Song (In My Heart)", "On & On", "Love Overboard" etc.

Yes, Asia. We do tend to sulk in our blues when we get hurt. Get out the bourbon, get out the ice cream, and as BJ says, pass the magazines and leave us alone. Gladys Knight and the Pips were a favorite group of mine during my teenage years. I fell I love with her during a performance of NEITHER ONE OF US on the Midnight Special. Her voice carried an arrow that went straight to my soul.
But this album was the first after they left Motown for Buddha Records. But there were a few great songs you haven't heard yet.
    I FEEL A SONG,
    IF I WERE YOUR WOMAN,
TRY TO REMEMBER/THE WAY WE WERE, and this song, which is a hot number about her father. The song is DADDY COULD SWEAR, I DECLARE. It cooks like hot popping Grease. You will ABSOLUTELY love it !!! I guarantee it. Listen to it. Bounce to it. Rock to it. And enjoy

This is the first album I bought at the age of 11! (1973) The first time I've heard her singing was on a record (That's Soul-compilation) that one of my brothers had called "If I Were Your Woman" (1970) and was totally mesmerized by her voice... and still are! ❤ Gladys tells a story in a song that few can touch! The Empress of Soul! PS Check out "If I Were Your Woman", you guys won't disappointed!

I cannot hear this song and not think of "A Different World" where Whitley and Jaleesa are auditioning for Gladys Knight to sing as her backup singers with this song. Cracks me up. Eventually they get to sing backup, though it was fantasy scene, with Gladys performing "Love Overboard" with is a great song too. 😎👍
