    We have the original G Gauge Lionel Thomas the Tank Engine set from early 2000s for my then little son. It ran under the tree played with coach roofs removed to put any number of action figures in for a ride. Until Lion Chief Lionel Polar Express arrived for my daughter. Now that’s the under tree train. The LGB is so much quieter than any other brand! Very nice! As a kid, Red Caboose Motel ran those on a big layout in the gift shop for countless hours every day. LGB is definitely quality.

      Sounds like some good choices to me!
      The red caboose motel recently removed the layout in the store/restaurant area. Made me a bit sad. That place was just as magical as Disney World to me when I was little.

    I think G gauge is the right size for under the Christmas tree. I totally agree with you!

    Nice set, but it’s too small Dave! You need the kind that you can ride on and lay track running all over the house. Do it, your family will love you for it!!

      Oh I would! If my house was only big enough 😆 maybe after I strike it rich I’ll start on that one. 👍

    I have to agree that this is the best set for under the tree. I find the sound of the G passenger cars to be very relaxing compared to other gauges. My family got their first LGB set in the early 80's and it is till going strong year after year. About 8 years ago I found a mid to late 80's passenger set just like yours, this year I finally put lights in it. The lights are currently powered through the 2 little holes on the back of the engine but I'll be going to battery power in the not so distant future. The lights make a great addition and I wish that I had installed them earlier. Great video and good luck with all of your trains.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 роки тому

      Nice! Yeah my set badly needs lights in the cars.

      @@dagryffynhobby The LGB kits are $15 - $20 a car but you can easily rig something up with LED's for cheaper if you wanted. Good luck.

    Lol, I bought nearly the same set for each of my two kids first Christmas, 37 and 34 years ago. I used Brasso on the track. But now it is Standard gauge for me. I sent you the video a few days ago. Enjoy

    What a special train for under the tree, Dave! G scale has a certain fantasy style that screams 'It's Christmas' when one is running around the tree! Thanks for sharing this and a very Merry Christmas to you and the family!

    It's said G Gauge is made for whimsy, and that LGB set certainly fits the bill!
    By the way, it looks like somebody's a little miffed she's not getting enough attention!

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 роки тому

      The whimsy is a bit of the attraction for me. It’s fun! The pup always wants all of the attention 😂 but she does get a lot of attention, don’t let that look on her face fool you.

    My preferred engine under the three is either my 1950 F3 Santa Fe or my 1957 Berkshire. Only problem is that my F3 really does not like fast track switches. Gives a giant flash spark when going over the switch. At some point you might win the train choice but the other solution is to put up another tree😜. Then there is a space for your choice. I run two tracks under the tree which is another solution.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 роки тому

      Those are fantastic choices. I don’t know about the fast track switches but I know they rub on the tubular 0-27 switches. Maybe it’s the same thing.
      Another tree? Not enough space but an interesting solution!
      I thought of putting two loops under the tree but it just comes out too far into the room. Maybe next year we will have to find a new location for the tree to allow for multiple trains. Yeah, now I’m thinking!

    • @gregleuze6657
      @gregleuze6657 2 роки тому

      @@dagryffynhobby I take over the entire family room with my two loops. I could make them smaller but why would I want to do that😏. My outer loop is O72 and I am hoping the UP Veranda Turbine comes out before February. That will be my next Christmas Train. I think outside the box, especially when it comes to trains. I know that I might have a toy train sickness, I am not looking for a cure😜.

    The Stainz locomotive is actually a decent model of an Austrian 2ft 6inch gauge engine, the coaches aren’t to bad either

    Does the train have a smoke unit and horn/sound?

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 роки тому

      No smoke unit, and it never occurred to me about a horn, don’t think it has one, and there’s no button on the transformer to activate one.

    One other reason it's not running well in reverse is because it has never been run backwards so not run in, all my LGB are run both forward and reverse, the lights were sold separately and plugged into the locomotive, but you can get g scale lights to this day, also other g scale model railway carriages and goods are compatible might have to change the cupplings not a big deal, just undo the screw on the carriage change them over reattach the screw and run!

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  7 місяців тому

      Thanks! I don’t know about its first life, but I always make a point to run it both directions. But if it was o oh run forward for 20 years then it might be too late!I have to revisit this engine and complete the service and reassembly. I can 3D print some of the small missing pieces too:
