If only the birdhouse entrance was a bit smaller there never would have been a Cuckoo egg to begin with. Chances are it killed at least two other host chicks/eggs in the attempt and taking in all the food from host parents. You can see one of the killed eggs in the corner, got stuck and killed due to no heat.
Well, a minute into the video, the cuckoo is also threatening the host parent when it feeds its own chick rather than it! Bird language for "You'd better feed me and only me! You may be the parent here, but I'm the bigger bird. I'll bite you!". Very frustrating!

Sometimes the parent will check the strength of the chicks pulling on the food. If the chick doesn't pull hard enough on the food then the parent thinks to give the food to a stronger chick.@@VVarat
It's interesting to see that both the cuckoo and the chick survived. Probably the artificial box did the correct job preventing the fratricide of at least of the brood. I imagine how hard it had been for the cuckoo getting out of the box because of the grates😆

This is called the 'mafia hypothesis'. Cuckoos control some levels of insect species from getting out of control, since they tend to eat so much. That's why most nature experts say it's best to leave it alone if you happen to come across any type of parasitised bird nest. This is a very difficult thing to do since cuckoos like this one are so hateable.

Yes, mixed brood (cuckoo with host nestlings) can be observed more often in (semi)cavity nesters such as great tit or redstart. Great tit fledged succesfully and had even above average weight. In this nest, female cuckoo laid her egg originally into redstart nest which was later usurped by the great tit (see the redstart egg next the cuckoo). Very unusual case.

I disagree. I think the small baby kept clamping down on the mothers beak it didn't allow him to grab the insect. On more than one occasion the insect went all the way in his mouth

He was pointing out that the mother fit the bug all the way into its mouth multiple times, but decided to feed it to the cuckoo anyways. As for why, it's likely because birds rely on it "catching" on a specific part of the inside of a chick's mouth to know it'll go down properly, and it simply wasn't happening. Could also be due to an inexperienced parent, or the incessant begging from the giant cuckoo chick.

It only occasionally kills other chicks by pushing them out. The cuckoo is in between these two, and usually really doesn’t need to kill over food, but over space. In a box, however, there’s plenty of space, so all can potentially thrive, although it helps when the box is built in the round just big enough for the nest to be snug in, so he doesn’t have corners to push the eggs into. In those cases, he can try all day, they just fall right back into the nest. He might occasionally kill one from tossing her around too much, but that’s it.

I think that parents don't recognize cuckoo chick as a parasite (at least research suggests this) so observation of SealMr2 sounds exceptional to me in case the cuckoo starved to death.

Hi Peter, I have one idea for you to make an experiment if condition allows: 1. design a fox to attract a cuckoo whick come to "sneak" an egg into it. Of course you will see it. 2. somehow delay the hatch of that egg for a few day so that other birds get hatched and feed first. Then the cuckoo may not be able to squeaze them out. Or simply design a box so that the cuckoo and can never make it. The eggs it pushed always fall back. 3. after all eggs hatched, you can use a clamp or some tool to help to feed the chicks EXCEPT the cuckoo chick whild their parents are out. 4. meanwhile when you are feeding them, the chick will shit. it would be still nutricious since the parents will eat them. You pick up the shit with clamp and feed them right into the mouth of the cuckoo chick. 5. Let us know what the result will be. Show it in youtube: the cuckoo may die or still grow up. It may change the habit of laying egg into other birds nest.
I have a better idea. Have a small mechanical arm with a electrode probe. if the cuckoo chick tries to push the host chick or eggs out of the nest have the probe electrocute the cuckoo chick so that it learns not to do that the next time . lol

I have a better idea. Have a small mechanical arm with a electrode probe. if the cuckoo chick tries to push the host chick or eggs out of the nest have the probe electrocute the cuckoo chick so that it learns not to do that the next time . lol

Does anyone else find it interesting how the mother feeds her real chick first before the cuckoo chick? Also, anyone else concerned that the cuckoo will smother the other chick to death? I wish the poster of this video told us what happened at the end… this is the first time i saw a cuckoo coexist with another chick.
I love the mom ignoring the parasite and feeding her baby. That greedy bastard attacking the mom for not feeding his fat ass irritates that hell out of me. I know the baby isnt supposed to know any better but the whole species of cuckoo irritate the hell out of me. From baby to adult, not enough bad things happen to them imo

We don't need Cuckoos. That's why there are other predators including humans to keep birds population down. Cuckoo can go Dodo.
