This does look very nice. But SLIcan be pretty funky at times. I just went with a newer gpu instead. A GTX 750 ti with 2 gb vram. With a C2D extreme, it eats up XP games like they're candy.
I find that an external hard drive works really well for archival data like motherboard drivers, graphics drivers, xp service pack updates, and GoG installers. Also using Snappy Driver Installer Origin for generic driver installation is a no brainer when building retro systems.
Cool, yes I have an old haswell i5 and thought about it. I think sandy bridge is the last to officially support xp but think the couple of generations after are unofficially fine.
That's totally the build I would recommend for XP as well. I personally have an i7 3rd gen with a GTX 980 and it runs every game for XP with no problems 😀
hmm i use kinda similar config like you sadly i just cant afford or have good enough psu for 980ti but still: i7 3770 at 4ghz (coolermaster xdream cpu cooler) 8gb ram 2x4 1333mhz 650ti 1gb ( 2tb hdd 480 gb ssd (has dualboot winxp./10 on it -winxp 32 bit by the way and mobo is gigabyte z68 xp ud3p 1155 (good board heap of usb ports and 2x 3.0 ports aswell sa like 8 2.0 which is good yes i know its not a beast but it runs ALMOST every winxp era games except maybe crysis and like far cry 2 /3 (but all older games like i dont know gta vice city san andreas gta 4 gta 3 moorhuhn capitan claw and stuff run flawlessly edit: i put better psu now so i can put 980ti if i want to
That doesn't make any sense, that's not how bottlenecks work. The "neck" on the cpu didn't just get wider because of a resolution change, is still the same. It's probably a sli/driver issue or doom 3 changed advanced settings without notice.
I can't wait to do a socket 775 SLI build. I have a mountain of shit I've been gathering including two 9800GT reference cards, hopefully they work. I just need enough time to myself to build it proper.
my dualboot xp 32bit/vista 64bit build has an i7 3930k oced to 4.7ghz 16gbs of ddr3 2400mhz in quad channel and first gen titans in sli all hooked up to a dell p991 trinitron display running at 2560x1920 using custom res and a older dell 30 inch lcd thats 2560x1600

Nice build. Should be a great XP workhorse. Back in the day I had a gaming beast based on Intel Qx9650, and SLI 8800 GTS 512. I am annoyed that I gave away one of those GPUs and have only one now.
nativeley 4790k works too, and a 980Ti can used in XP with a very little modification in the driver. 368.81. Also X99 systems can run nativeley XP. So. 1680V3 or 2699 V4 is possible. But maybe a 4690K @ 5GHz is somewhat faster.
Nice little retro PC! However...the modern RGB and case kinda ruin the retro aesthetic, lol. Though it sounds like reliability is more the concern for you. Just be prepared to have those old boards serviced at some point, they may need to be recapped in the near future. Some of the legacy equipment we use at work that still run on XP needed to be recapped.
Thankyou. Yes this one is for daily gaming and reliability is the thing. I like to fool around with my older stuff but wouldnt want to run it too much to keep it going longer. Caps look fine on this one.
This hardware is about a new as I go, I do retro and barely think of anything beyond p4 as being valid for a build like this for xp gaming so even this was a stretch. I'd say this would be a good build in 2008, last year of xp. I didn't think xp games did well in widescreen? if they support it at all?
@@66mhzbrain Just because it can do 1080p doesn't mean it has to do 1080p. And really it depends on what you define as "Windows XP." Like to me Windows XP encompasses everything that Windows XP runs on and can run. So that means it didn't even end in 2014 with the support closure. It doesn't really start in 2001 but stuff older than that isn't really useful. The best thing about Windows XP is this flexibility in software compatibility spanning more than a decade to me.
hello , is it possible to know the temperatures of 8800gt's. I have almost the same configuration but on am2+ and phenom 9950. I hesitate to spend the 8800gt’s in water, they have a bad reputation for cooling
Im not sure. I'll see if they feel hot. The gt was a die shrink on the more poweful 8 series and draws less power and therefore presumably cooler. Anand tech reviewed these reference cards and never mentioned heat as an issue. I'll see if I can stress test them and get at least an ambient temp.
@@66mhzbrain my cards go easily to 70/75°C full charge,50/55 idle (pads/thermal paste brand new ) and the noise of the single fan slot is horrible at 100% ... just for the sound and health of the cards I hesitate to water them

Tip: ultimate= 4790K,4gb2400mhz,980ti,120gb-ssd.
Anything older is not ultimate. Low end / beginner / trash / heat exchanger.. ;)
Words like that get responses!
XP x64 with 32GB at insane DDR3 overclocked speeds would be ultimate

A good idea. I'll get one
I do exactly the same i have my own litle portable data basese for all my old machines. Games/rivers/etc it works realy well.
I recently built a Z77 i73770 980ti rig. Strangely easy build with XP and W10 lol

that is XP overpowered system!
You should install and play F.E.A.R. on that Windows XP build.
Ill add it to the list 😁
yes and also have eax card
The speed increase on the higher resolution is from the bottleneck being taken off the cpu.
That doesn't make any sense, that's not how bottlenecks work. The "neck" on the cpu didn't just get wider because of a resolution change, is still the same.

I am so trigered how the cou fans point up and are very close to a wall.
No choice, theres a lot of airflow in there though

Haha, yes😁

yeah always thorw a ssd in nowadays - so cheap 128gb for around $10usd - when testing a loading things u just want it done asap
I still like using old noisy hdd's for nostalgias sake sometimes but will probabaly start using more ssd's.
What's that SODIMM slot between the expansion slots used for? I've seen them in multiple old motherboards.
it triggers the SLI Option for Dual GPU Setup
