As a norwegian male, die hard into BM, I love this album to death! Was going to see her at this years Midgardsblot, but sadly she had to cancel. Kudos on a great honest review.
Guys we all know that being a metalhead happens from our very early youth to the grave. You cant just turn to metal later in life, as if it was a new hobby. She is a metalhead and anyone could tell. She's not a pretty puppet in front of a band. She grew up listening to Emperor and Bathory. And she also had some pop project, well good for her! Great album, great evolution. Live performance is 10x better.
Metal appropriation!?? Are people actually saying this? Nothing could be more ridiculous. Metal is for everyone. All art is for everyone to appreciate and create! Grow up metal community. If you don't like it don't listen to it. Or at least critique it based on its musical merits
First of all, this isn't real black metal. Its too clean and sanitized. If anything, it should be called "Viking Metal" and I cringe to even label it that. A better term would be shit metal. Second, Myrkur is just a shitty Ulver rip off so stop overhyping it.
@@mkmike4903 Stop being a black metal elitist bro, you have a point this isn't real black metal more like gothic black metal and have a lot of traditional music experimentation, by the way she didn't sing a single word about vikings
I don’t know what, “real black metal”, is. I hear from some people that it’s only ever trve underground, can never be released on major labels, and should only have extremely raw production. From other people I hear that it’s not only about the music, but also a way of life, about always being “anti-pop”, to put it generally. From others, perhaps a plurality of “black metal elitists”, I hear that trve black metal is “second wave BM” only, and from a subsection of these folks I hear that it is only Scandinavian, or only Norwegian. From others, I hear that first wave black metal, obviously Bathory and Venom, and bands playing that style today (I’m thinking the recent, excellent album from Skeleton, on 20 Buck Spin), can be included in black metal. From others, I hear that it can include “weird” or experimental black metal (perhaps my favorite extreme metal micro-genre), but others say this strays too far from what black metal is meant to be. Some say the American black metal scene it not “trve enough” to be real BM, and others love, or even prefer it. So who is correct? Who knows what is actually trve? I don’t think this is as easily answered as some folks would like it to be, sorry. I’m not saying Myrkur is black metal, nor am I saying she isn’t. I think it’s really subjective. There’s definitely black metal there, mixed with other genres, and experimentation, so call it whatever you want. All I know is MOST metal I listen to, particularly that’s post 2010, is not any one singular genre, easily defined. For much of it it’s obviously death, or black, or doom, but most of the recent albums I think are the best are blends of multiple genres, and full of experimentation, so they are not easily defined. I think this is literally what keeps metal vital, so you may not like it, and you may say, “that’s not the genre that I love”, or whatever, but this is only going to continue. There’s no going back to the past, only echoes of it, but never a return, so try to enjoy it maybe? ✌️
I highly doubt the controversy is due to "femininity" but rather because someone looking for black metal won't really find it in several of these songs. I still really like the album (and the rest of her darker work), but I consider it more like ambient folk music with elements of black metal, rather than something primarily "black metal." I think it's useful to at least point that out. And no, I'm not a "purist." Experimentation like this is good for any genre at the end of the day.
Just out of curiousity, when you make music, do you pick the genre and then make music and label it that, or does the genre label come after? Like is she the one who chose the genre label “black metal” or did that come from somewhere else?
I think of this album more as a "Blackend" Atmospheric Folk Metal album. It's like 80's Dead Can Dance ("summoning of the muse" or "De Profundis") music colored with black and gothic metal textures
Translations: The name Myrkur in itself sounds to be a play with the Danish, Swedish and Norweigian names for darkness ( mørke, mörknad) approximating an ancient pronunciation,- outside of that I cannot see it meaning anything - it´s probably just an artist alias. Mareridt( mare-ridt) means nightmare, Kulning ( kul-ning)is in fact an ancient Scandinavian high pitched herding call technique for women still in use to this day, Maaneblot (maa-ne-blot) means moon sacrifice ( blot being the actual Old Norse word from the Vikingr Age for sacrifice), Elleskudt ( elle-skudt) means alder tree shot,- would probably refer to Nordic mythology of the god Balder being shot with an arrow made from alder, Ulvinde ( ulv-inde) means she- wolf.
A lot of them want to prove how macho they are and show off how "pure" the Black Metal they listen to is. And, of course, they insult anyone who attempts to play Black Metal with a different twist. Especially if it's a woman.
Agree 100%, a lot of BM fans seem totally against any change at all. Even when bands started to mix BM with things like post-rock a lot of fans got mad for no real reason haha
I think for me the best artists are the ones with the most wider musical knowledge, experience and versatility,no matter where the artist came before. This is a great artist/album/music,very atmospheric yet metal, folk yet dark, lots of oestrogenes,a few male growls on some perticular songs might have helped for the purists but for me as a composer/author,she kicked ass of a lots of male author/composer of black metal out there,4 out of 5 not bad at all, great job dude, keep it up!
I'm an Australian in Denmark (beautiful country) at the moment and I am way to scared at trying to pronounce Scandinavian words 😅 but I guess I make people laugh! Good review Sam!
great video Sam Dunn!! I'm watching these videos during this quarantine in a form of marathon because i have nothing else to do and it makes me see how you and BANGER TV grew bigger and bigger on UA-cam but also being able to keep it entertain-able and that's great to see. props for the review on MYRKUR's Mareridt
There's so much depth and experimentation here it's very hard not admit there's massive quality. Amalie is clearly quite extremely talented and has a wonderful taste for her art. Let the girl play, the purists can drown in the shallow end.
Tell 'em Sam. Elitism and negative snobbism in metal seriously needs to stop. This woman is creative and talented enough to put out a metal record on this scale regardless of her background. Listened to the record a couple of time and it's definitely a strong 8.5/10. Amazing record.
This woman is a product for the masses: a pop singer making "Black Metal" records for pseudo-edgy kids who don't know shit. She's a pretty face and nothing more. And i'm far from being an elitist. I like Chelsea Wolfe, who collaborates on this album. Chelsea is actually talented and a really good musician, who writes her own songs. Amalie is a joke. Just a pop singer, trying to cash in of the black metal trend. It's plastic music for plastic people. Embarrassing.
There's no "black metal trend", you fucking idiot. I find it comforting that every complain against Amalie and her music so far has come amidst a comment filled with incoherent garbage. Says a lot.
bloodoath222 no she didn't do it for the passion of music, she's doing it to sell records. Failed pop musician, failed model, failed actress. Let's try and be black metal.
People complaint too much! Myrkur is a very good artist with an incredible vocal range and she can do whatever she wants! I'm glad she's doing Black Metal and bringing lots of different elements to her music.
I fucking love Myrkur. I still frequently listen to "M" and pre-ordered this album in hopes that it lived up to "M" and I was not disappointed. I just love the blend of different styles of music, it's just really unique. It also opened a new door to more "folk" style music.
One thing that I don't think Sam highlighted enough, but was obvious from his talk, involves the fact that this is a great Album. An actual album that takes you on this journey. Listened to individually you can get lost in one sound, but when taken together, truly unique and will probably influence others w its melodic tones, sweeping panorama of sounds, and how to imbue metal into new, and sometimes verboten realms. Great album.
Thank You, Sam, for an unbiased and very fair review of an artist who has the ovaries to step outside the box and outside of every run of the mill cookie cutter metal head´s comfort zones. Could it be more metal,- yes,- it could also be more mainstream for the sake of sales,- it´s neither,- it´s her own thing! More power to her for that!
I didn't know she was in a pop group. I literally just saw the band name and black metal and said, "alright, let me check them out" and I enjoyed the 2 albums released at the time.
People always hate when a metal artist goes pop (I know I do!). So when a pop artist goes metal, we should celebrate it! I have listened to this record only once and it demands more attention, but I already know that it's great. And I love my oldschool Bathory and Darkthrone!
Thank you for reviewing this! This album sounds a lot more put together and complete compared to the debut. Looking forward to buying it. Also, I know it's streaching the confines of metal a bit, but have you guys thought about reviewing the new Chelsea Wolfe album? It's probably one of the better doom metal albums released this year
You should check out and review Strokkur and their album Vantablack. Really cool folk/industrial metal from Sweden with members from Hammerfall and Yngwie Malmsteen.
You would think that within the umbrella of "Extreme metal" we would have plenty of room for anything and everything. This is the place where artists should feel welcome to come experiment, appropriate, and create unique sounds within all the sub-genres. Instead we have the "trve" orthodoxy crying and complaining that someone is trying to expand the sound and to push the envelope further. It's sad. I salute her and look forward to giving this a spin. Great review Sam!
Whenever I get a new album I'll eventually come around to it, but this one I really sat and listened to a good 3 or 4 times back to front. A truly amazing record. 4/5 skulls is a good verdict.
Amalie Bruun being beautiful and talented at the same time makes gatekeepers losing their sense of superiority. She’s got several albums under her belt to prove her talent, while gatekeepers are proving their worth by keyboard warrioring.
I agree with this review. Her previous records were always unrealised potential, at least to me. The ideas were there but the songwriting just didn't live up to the feelings and creativity I've always believed she had. I think Mareridt is the first time she's completely nailed every aspect of the record, and I'm genuinely surprised by how much I'm coming to enjoy it, as someone who's not been very praising of her previous records.
I really love this record. And i don't have any problem with this girl being in pop-band before. Like wtf, metalheads? She is expanding your genre. Music eather evolves or dies and if you don't want your music to die you should embrace new blood and not being a conservative bitches.
I would agree with the haters if she didn't play any instruments or couldn't sing, she plays various instruments and can actually sing, of course being a pretty woman always helps but she has the talent, good for her for doing her own thing, I like it
The best way to find killer black metal is to see how much it pisses off black metal fans. The more pssied they are, the better the music usually is (like this and the new Asira).
Cool review! Would you guys review Epica? They are more metal than symphonic nowadays. It would be cool to see Epica and Mayan reviews on this channel!
I can't imagine being so resistant to change that I couldn't listen to anyone that doesn't sound like a Dark throne rip off. Change is natural and good. What a cool artist! Great review Sam!
It might sound utterly stupid but, when I first listened to the record, the transition from mareridt to maaneblot just really scared me, like, I felt a sense of dread and chills running up my spine when I first heard those blood-curdling screams (and I'm a huge black and death metal fan so, not that easily unsettled by screams and evil sounding screeches :p )! This album is incredible! Lots and lots of interesting tones and emotions.
Hahaha, awesome review. I'm from Denmark. Nice going on the pronunciation. Always a blast listening to foreigners trying to pronounce out words. Mareridt is actually not that hard to pronounce. The difficult part could be that our r's are hard r's. No matter how the words are pronounced, good to see some Danish appreciation. 😍🤘🏻🖤
Hell yeah, love the words mate! Didn't even get to pay that much atention to her, but after this review I got curious and now I'm gonna listen to it and I'm betting i'll like it x') \m/
As someone who loves the previous Myrkur record this one sounds a lot better. More interesting guitar riffs, the god-like Randall Dunn on production, plus Chelsea Wolfe as a guest.
I thought black metal was ment to be an exploratory genre of music. In that regard, I think this album is a good example of an artist pushing the boundaries of their genre, as did Bathory and Emperor in the past.
Agalloch, Sunn, Alcest, Enslaved, Anaal Nathrakh or Deathspell Omega are good examples of artists pushing the boundaries of the genre. This instead is and utterly mediocre, tepid, dull and bland hyped rehash of old, worn out ideas. Just another rip-off.
Well, I disagree with the latter part of your statement. I am unaware of any other black metal artists incorporating only female vocals in their music, let alone choirs. I also find the change in tempo, atmosphere and vocal styles make the album more dynamic and interesting. This is by no means one of the greatest black metal albums ( like a blaze in the northern sky or tara ) but it is accessible enough for people who may enjoy Myrkur's music to explore other similar and more extreme albums, a feat not every band has or can accomplish.
Great review. New subscriber here. Had seen some reviews before, and also watched Global Metal, which my wife and I enjoyed quite a bit, and she's not even that into metal. I was like, "hmm that guy looks familiar" and I just put that together, that that was you. Derp. Anyways, good job, and keep 'em coming.
I agree with you that talent is talent and good song writing is good song writing. With this album though I must say I just could not get into it. I found it rather disjointed and hard to get into. Good Review and glad to see you back.
It's not bad, but I find to be severely cliche ridden and pretty boring. Many of her "black-metal" riffs just sound amateurish and lack the originality that a riff, regardless of genre, should have. It simply baffles me how she has risen to relevance so fast and how much the establishment metal press has licked her boots. Another thing that has caught my attention is simply the fact that most of her fans seem to come from the more commercial side of the metal genre and the people who actually cares for the original black-metal sound and image seems to call her out for being a pretty generic musician who has greatly benefited of media hype.
As a norwegian male, die hard into BM, I love this album to death! Was going to see her at this years Midgardsblot, but sadly she had to cancel. Kudos on a great honest review.
Leave pop for metal? Great fucking decision.
was thinking the same
unun septium Exactly. Way better than the other way around.
Yeah right, have any of you music "experts" heard her pop "legacy"?
They should be supporting her instead, but black metal is a genre founded by antisocial nerds, so this is what we get instead.
fuknwastd can you point me to an interview displaying her pretentious attitude? I don't have an opinion either way yet

Black metal rules but the fanbase is the worst metal has to offer.
DXP Reviews I don't know about the "worst" part of it. There are some pretty horrible fanbases out there. Pantera fanboys for example.
DXP Reviews why is the fanbase bad?
A lot of them want to prove how macho they are and show off how "pure" the Black Metal they listen to is. And, of course, they insult anyone who attempts to play Black Metal with a different twist. Especially if it's a woman.

DIO WAS IN A WOOWOP BAND, I GUESS HE APPROPRIATED METAL TOO!!
Doo Wop*
Obviously was trying to make a point about how stupid it is to say switching genres is 'appropriation' of metal lol
Dio helped MAKE metal...
It's awesome to see you shining some light on an artist that I've been following for a few years and should be in every Metal fan's vocabulary!
It will never stop being funny to hear foreigners absolutely butcher Danish and other Scandinavian words.
The shame is real. ;-)
I'm an Australian in Denmark (beautiful country) at the moment and I am way to scared at trying to pronounce Scandinavian words 😅 but I guess I make people laugh! Good review Sam!
dude, we try.
Yea, I also see foreign people butcher English words all the time. But I don't recall ever judging them for it.
Dude. You did AMAZINGLY well at pronouncing the titles, for a non-scandinavian. I hereby grant you the honorary title of True viking \m/
Sam my man you should know by now that they are just called Sun, not Sun O.
Mr Dunn, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.
Thank you so much for allowing me to discover this artist!
great video Sam Dunn!!
I'm watching these videos during this quarantine in a form of marathon because i have nothing else to do and
it makes me see how you and BANGER TV grew bigger and bigger on UA-cam
but also being able to keep it entertain-able and that's great to see.
props for the review on MYRKUR's Mareridt
Honest review as always, Sam. Welcome back!
Her best yet. She is finding her balance.
No, its not metal idc what you say, that shit is boring af
agreed. Myrkur is fantastic!
Yeah she is getting good at pretending to be a metal chick for money
No where to go but up for this p.o.s

She is not really my cup of tea, but I definitively agree with what you saying about elitism and that she is talented.
There's no "black metal trend", you fucking idiot. I find it comforting that every complain against Amalie and her music so far has come amidst a comment filled with incoherent garbage. Says a lot.
there is nothing trendy about black metal. she did this for passion for the music and that deserves respect. these adolescent views on music are sad

Could it be more metal,- yes,- it could also be more mainstream for the sake of sales,- it´s neither,- it´s her own thing!
More power to her for that!
The O))) is silent!!!
Which is ironic, as it represents the Sunn amps logo, which in turn represents sound waves.
Thank you!

Great review, and if she is pissing people off, even better. That's what metal should do always!
Beethoven Headbanger when you have to obey rules to fit in, it stops to be a metal matter.
Fungihair you couldn't be more right!
Id give u a like, but ur at 69 .. why ruin it?
Good point
Great!!! I was waiting to this record to be reviewed.
Love your reviews!
What i like about Myrkur and the feminine vibe that Sam talks about is that it makes the music so haunting like nattens barn friggin love that song.
Found that artist yesterday and i can't remember how many times iv played it on repeat probably already 40 times. (will continue)
Thank you for reviewing this! This album sounds a lot more put together and complete compared to the debut. Looking forward to buying it.
Also, I know it's streaching the confines of metal a bit, but have you guys thought about reviewing the new Chelsea Wolfe album? It's probably one of the better doom metal albums released this year
Hiss Spun is a brilliant record. She's done a song with Amelie too. Good stuff.
Glad to have you back, Sam. Missed you.
You should check out and review Strokkur and their album Vantablack. Really cool folk/industrial metal from Sweden with members from Hammerfall and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Great album, good job on review bro, greetings from brazil!

Good to see you back boss !
Love the content you put out, Sam. Keep on the good work.
Where's the arch enemy review?
Hope you will review the new Satyricon album when it comes out.
Banger, what do ya think about a Lock Horns episode about Pop Culture and Metal Cultures' relationship and influences on each other over the years?
Whenever I get a new album I'll eventually come around to it, but this one I really sat and listened to a good 3 or 4 times back to front. A truly amazing record. 4/5 skulls is a good verdict.
Nicely reviewed, Sam! What´s your take on Satyricon´s new album?
Can you review the new Satyricon?
Amalie Bruun being beautiful and talented at the same time makes gatekeepers losing their sense of superiority. She’s got several albums under her belt to prove her talent, while gatekeepers are proving their worth by keyboard warrioring.
From the snippets of songs, I really liking what I am hearing.
The quality of production, her vocals are excellent. I'd get this in a heartbeat
It's almost as if Anneke Van Giersbergen made a black metal album. I'd buy it.
Hell yes
No Septicflesh Codex Omega review I see okay!
If it sounds good, it sounds good. That's all that matters! I'm with ya. This album is one of the best from the year!
Nice to see you back Sam! Is lock horns coming back?
Nice Sam, I was interested to hear your opinion on this record. Keep up the good work
Great review! Gonna check that album out

Well, that's your opinion. But i'd rather listen to indie pop apeing Ulver then to Ulver apeing indie pop. If you know what i mean.
I'm pretty sure you are trolling. So... whatever.
I would agree with the haters if she didn't play any instruments or couldn't sing, she plays various instruments and can actually sing, of course being a pretty woman always helps but she has the talent, good for her for doing her own thing, I like it

Every metal entity has their own beer now and I don't know where to get any of it. Cool Anciients shirt
Greattings from Portugal
Cool review! Would you guys review Epica? They are more metal than symphonic nowadays. It would be cool to see Epica and Mayan reviews on this channel!
The track she did for the Decibel flexi series absolutely kills.
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥 Great Review as Always and Myrkur Rules too🍻
Greetings from Minneapolis, MN
I have heard some singing like this in Siebenburgen's Loreia
excellent review man
I'm going to go buy this album right now. Naysayers be damned.
Sam is the best commentator on Banger TV
I'm sure that Hipster Black Metal guy will get a kick outta this.
Fantastic!!!! I'm really looking forward to hearing this album.good music is good music.
You might wanna try listening to more black metal buddy before sticking to what your saying.
Atmospheric Black Metal
I personally like all of the ethereal typed sound.....its' different yes but I think it adds more than it takes away.
Its a glorious record. In Canada this is something Id play in the early morning on the way to school just as the shitty -33' weather comes in.
Great have the same shirt
I think it sounds amazing.
You must review the new Shadowside album, Shades of Humanity. Brazillian heavy metal, power female vocal of Dani Nolden and Magnus Rosén on bass :D
How much is Cohaagen paying you for this?
It's the music that matters..
I agree, Myrkur is awesome band. Its little bit different, but i like it for sound, text and singer too ofcourse :)
Did not expect that
thanks you
...Toki?
Review Ensiferum's newest, please?! :D
I agree with you that talent is talent and good song writing is good song writing. With this album though I must say I just could not get into it. I found it rather disjointed and hard to get into. Good Review and glad to see you back.
I enjoy Myrkur's music love the diverse sounds ..I'm open-minded. i say Yes to this.. Pop to Metal no no no
Nergal has his band Behemoth & got Me & that Man totally different genre of music so Myrkur is amazing for me she is close to Burzum
Hey, she even did rap with R.A. the Rugged Man. A mortal sin, fellow men! I DO NOT TIP MY FEDORA!
Far Better than "M". Will check it oot. Welcome back Sam!
The serpent ♥
Love Myrkur, totally expansive and a true broadening of the sound landscape.
I really enjoy and i love Listening to it ..I like when music takes you to another place..Myrkur-Mareridt certainly does just that 5/5 for me
Oh Sammy boy! Those sweet irresistible Relapse's checks...
There are cheques?!!!
Yes, but not good musique!
Well said, well said!!
Yeah, she has great talent!
awesome review, I can't agree more, the past of the musicians should not be a factor
Great artist. Has a strong Ulver influence. Good recording and production on her debut album. I will buy Maredit. ;)
Influence ? More like a bad rip-off.
