It’s 10th anniversary of L’Orpheline and I’ve just found your review which by far resonates with me the most. For me it is like churchy incense dipped in white cream. I know how it sounds but that’s L’Orpheline, my shadowy buddy. Masterfully blended duality.
Wow, I've loved this perfume for years and have never heard a review so incredibly accurate! What a great job describing both the notes and the atmosphere it creates, every aspect to it! Thank you, will be following your reviews closely♥️
I think your review is spot on. It is a beautiful churchy incense, but it is cold and beautiful in a way a crypt or a chapel could be. For me it suits a rainy autumn day perfectly, I had a rather big sample of it a couple of years ago and I remember it being perfect for that kind of gloomy day, especially if you're in a melancholic mood. It definitely isn't a cheerful, energising fragrance, it's good for a walk in the rain, a visit to the library, an afternoon with a book. It is one of those fragrances I would wear for myself and not to please anyone or attract compliments. Your review reminded me of it and now I'm thinking of getting it.
This is a perfume that I apply whenever I want that no one approaches me. And it unexpectedly gives some additional self-confidence, even a little aggressive. And melancholy. Perfect for a cloudy, rainy day when you want to mourn alone with yourself.
Solitary, introspective, and isolated are words that come to mind when I think of this fragrance. Though I choose not to ascribe to it any melancholy meaning, it's more something I reach for when spending a cozy day in at home, I definitely could see it being interpreted that way. Not a crowd pleaser, not something I wear for others.
you are so right about the staying power, I took shower and it's still there! sillage is not a beast but I'm okay with that. L'orpheline really really smells like a shop in a cathedral, it smells like a convent. very nostalgic for me because I grew up in convent area. And it's the woody resin/ frankincense scent that make it smells so. I collect natural frankincense and myrrh from cathedral shop and l'orpheline smells exactly like my frankincense box. 90% the same! the rest 10% probably the pepper? I barely pick up any musk but maybe it's just my nose. very nice fragrance!
@talking scents Great reviews pal keep them coming. English being not my native mother tongue I’m sorry to say I find lil difficulty sometimes getting the names of some of your other frag references that you mention and I’m eager to get, is there a way you could write them down in the description? Thx👍🏼
Thank you! Sorry about that! I'll absolutely do that in future and I'll work through my videos to add them into the details, thank you! Is there any you're particularly curious about that I can clear up for you?
Talking Scents Talking Scents no need to be sorry, kind and thoughtful response too, thank you. All cleared up, it just took me some back and forth through some vids to finally get it🙂 thx🌷
It’s funny you use the word austere, as that was my feeling. But Ii left me completely cold. The opening is promising but it dries down to a powdery scent, and I really struggled to pick out anything.
Yeah I can see that, I really like this, but 100% I agree, objectively speaking I think it could easily be seen as dull as dishwater. It seems the musk doesn't always have a strong smell to some people too, or can be completely ansomic, which I have heard can happen with botanical musks, so I wonder if that's anything to do with it? Kind of interesting. There's an Annick Goutal musk frag and Kiehls Musk too that are both kind of famous for smelling like nothing to a lot of people.
At first L'orpheline made me sneeze, and I am a huge Black pepper fan. The opening burst doesnt stay, the old world scent of churchy incense is what I fell in love with. I'm glad you said it's not a middle eastern scent, its catholic all the way. great review thank you.
I've definitely read this before on fragrantica, there's a few people who mention it just disappearing. I don't know if it fell victim of a bad reformulation or if it's just one of those weird ones that just don't work for some at all, but it's nuclear on me, to the point that scrubbing it off is a problem! It's a bit of a shame, but that's perfume I guess. I will say it's a very different incense from Montale etc. It's not oriental at all. Have you ever tried cdg Avignon?
Talking Scents always wanted avignon but missed the boat and can’t find it anywhere. I’m thankful for casbah and sahara noir which I’m told are close. I won’t dismiss lutens though because some of his are stunning especially fleurs d’oranger and majeste rose. Btw I ordered the new Beaufort terror & magnificence I cant wait
Ahh brilliant! I ordered a sample too, really looking forward to it! I was going to just blind buy the bottle but then I spent the money on something different 😆 it looks excellent from the notes, doesn't it?
Talking Scents I totally went for the bottle I felt compelled. I got 10 samples of strangers parfumerie including SOMBRE there’s a review on here. It’s VERY VERY sickening so much that I think I love it ha haaa

Well said, had the same impression

I love this fragrance, it gives me a feeling of slow motion fall into deep fluffy snow 🥰🥰🥰
Great review :). Definitely my favourite perfume, although there are so many negative reviews on it in fragrantica.
You just got a new subscriber! I have and love this fragrance so much! You’re a really good reviewer 🙂 Keep it doing
I want it now!
I’m a church dweller, sniffing the moist stone, incense and oak wood benches.
Well done!
Ah you'll love it by the sounds of it! I'm with you all the way for all those things!
Interesting. I like incense a lot. I’m finding myself wearing most of my fragrances when I’m alone anyway. I’ll have to track this down. Thanks Ben!
Cheers Christie, and me too! I actually prefer it tbh, when I go out I very often wear no perfume at all believe it or not haha

I think this should be the favorite perfume of Thom Yorke😅
New subscriber, I like a lot your reviews!
Hi it worked. I am here 1 year after posting to learn more about this as I've just blind bought it from Costco.
Hi there. Thinking about buying it from Costco too. Did you like it?

Which one from Montale?
I think it feels cold because I can smell some peppermint in it :))
