  • While Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) is at Carolyn's home, Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) shows up, and Raylan shoots him, only to find out Mansell was reaching for a demo tape, not a gun.
    From Season 1, Episode 8: "The Question"
    Stream Season 1 Of Justified: City Primeval Now: bit.ly/StreamJustifiedSPENow
    Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who's already slipped through the fingers of Detroit's finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell's attorney, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive.

    This is why the series didn't work. Clement was NEVER a threat to Raylan. He was never smart nor dangerous enough to be someone who could challenge Raylan. All he is was lucky.

    Old Raylan would have had that out of the way in the first episode. Probably the first scene.

    I loved this scene so much because it makes Boyd's prediction in the woods in season 6 come to pass, and he realizes that. He finally crosses the line, and his nature gets the best of him.
    Sure, he's shocked that he did the exact same thing Raymond Cruz did, but Boyd called it years before Raylan even met Cruz.

    The minute this clip transition to Miami is when the entire series comes alive. All the best stuff happens in the Miami to Kentucky scenes. Everything in Detroit was terrible and 90% of the scenes were shot in what appears to be the Ozark blueish black filter. You can't see a damn thing!

    • @MrErizid

      The blue filter is what they do to make you think its night time so they can save money without actually filming at night.

      I really wish they'd have done a spinoff set in Miami. I was always intrigued to see what Raylan got up to when he's in the place he wants to be rather than forced to be.
      The other marshals and chief deputy marshall were intriguing and could have been good side characters.
      Plus there's tons of potential for interesting villains and happenings that would have been fresh and very different from rural Kentucky.

      Absolutely. While I blame a majority of this season's problems on dropping Raylan in a story he just didn't belong in, it was no different than the Detroit scenes from S5 being one of main reasons S5 just didn't work. Raylan Givens just ain't made for the big city.

    This and the final 20min of the show were the only good parts of the whole season. Clement was very much a baddie that only should’ve been around for maybe 4 episodes if this was the original series. He just wasn’t made to run a whole season of the show.

      I thought Boyd Holbrook was good but they just gave him crap dialogue to work with and not enough time with just Raylan. He had the right amount of charisma and fearlessness that would have made him an OG Justified villain.

      @@Aimee_Oakland That's what I thought. If they brought in Holbrook for that character somewhere in the original series (I'm thinking to replace the awful Crowe family in Season 5), Clement would be up there as one of Justified's top villains. This sequel series was just a massive misfire.

      @@ComedyBros5 As I recall, Daryl Crowe Jr was actually based on Clement. Boyd Holbrook would have been too young but I think he would have been amazing on the original series and I'd take him over Michael Rappaport's god awful performance.

    The thing is they already give away this ending in the scene with Raylan and Raymond Cruz. Cruz tells Raylan this exact story but with a different bad guy and I believe it was a wine opener or something. In the book, this is the big moment. In the series, this has zero impact. Clement did not matter to Raylan, so shooting him would not have the impact that they try to position it as (becomes part of his decision to ultimately quit). This was not a personal shooting. This was a person who meant anything to him. And Carolyn didn't mean anything to Raylan. Detroit meant nothing to Raylan.

    Is it like the ØG? No.
    It’s kind of like an interlude to Boyd getting his last run .
    Also it gives us a chance to see Raylan as a dad.
    Carolyn love interest was hit or Miss to some and I personally don’t believe Raylan is a one night stand kind of guy but eh she’s cool enough to me.
    Clement was bigger than he thought he was . But again he got under Raylan skin more than some average thug and used a lot of his luck to his advantage up until this. He ain’t no Crowder though.

    "We are made up of the same atoms and molecules of those who passed before us."
    "Clement, stop."
    Brilliant writing right there. Clement touched a nerve with Raylan because the latter hates his father and believes he is nothing like him. Then Clement reaches into his pocket and Raylan executes him which makes him realize that he can be just like his father. An interesting twist on the novel's ending and a bit of character development for Raylan. Justified: City Primeval is better than most fans realize.

    • @ComedyBros5
      @ComedyBros5 14 днів тому +2

      Nah, it's definitely as bad as most fans realize. This and the bit where Raylan confronts him with his daughter were the only bits of fine dialogue and writing of the whole season. Everything else was absolutely mediocre.

    • @Aimee_Oakland
      @Aimee_Oakland 14 днів тому +2

      I don't think this has anything to do with Arlo. Sure, there's always going to be that anger inside Raylan that comes from his traumatic childhood and Arlo. But the incident in question was not a reflection of how he is or isn't Arlo.

    • @LeonWick526
      @LeonWick526 13 днів тому

      @@Aimee_Oakland Then why did Raylan get annoyed when Clement mentioned how we are made up of the same stuff as our parents? It's a bit too coincidental. Also if you recall, Raylan wondered what would've happened if Tommy Bucks didn't pull on him. He also almost murdered Dickie after he killed Raylan's aunt but didn't. Things like these are tied with the Mansell shooting.

    • @Aimee_Oakland
      @Aimee_Oakland 7 днів тому

      @@LeonWick526 I saw it as him getting annoyed that Clement was delaying the inevitable. He didn't want to hear anymore of Clement's BS. I just don't think Raylan would be personally impacted by something Clement says because this man means nothing to him. If it came from Boyd or really anyone in Harlan, it would mean something. If they had done a better job of establishing some banter between Clement and Raylan, I think it could have worked.

      You need to watch the Police Activity channel and watch a bunch of the police shooting videos there. It is extremely common in those shootings for perps in real life with records of extremely violent crime to protest "Why'd you shoot me man? I didn't do nuthin!" when they get shot and/or arrested for things like carjacking and murder.
