I apologize that I had to fade the video itself but like so often on mainstream songs they get hit with copyright issues (sometimes audio, sometimes visual aka video itself and sometimes both). In this case it was hit with both audio and visual copyright claims and in order to even post it I had to either mute the song to resolve the audio claim or fade the video to resolve the visual claim, if did neither it would remain blocked worldwide and no-one would be able to watch this except me. I consider fading the video the lesser of two evils, that way you at least get to enjoy the song along with Ashtyn and Jon.
@@JoeSmith-iv3sf Read the description under the video first and foremost if want to know why I post them (all of the videos on here explain why I do so in the descriptions under them). As for why Ashtyn and Jon don't post these on their channel it's due to couple reasons...firstly copyright issues with mainstream music a) copyright claims can become copyright strikes and most mainstream music have copyright claims on them including 70-80% of the ones can see posted on mine b) the fact they monetize their channels while I don't, lots of copyright issues would impact their channel income in a big way but has no impact on mine since I don't monetize anything on mine and have no intention of ever doing so.
This song made me get to know my father before he died, saved me a lot of regret, because of this song, I was there that morning, when my father passed away, and I did get to tell him...........
Me too. It brings tears to my eyes, because I lost both my Maternal Grandfather and then my Maternal Grandmother within the same week (During the Lethal Coronavirus Pandemic of late January 2021). #I wasn't there that morning.....I didn't get to tell 'em all the things I had to say#
Be sure you tell everyone that you love that you love them. Do not be bitter. Do not hold a grudge. Forgive and forget. No one is promised tomorrow, so make that call today.. Do it right now as tomorrow may be too late for some.
I lost my mom 2 years ago. 3 days before my birthday. I had planned on visiting her and going to dinner with her. She had been dealing with COPD real bad. When my dad called i just knew when i saw the number on my caller id. I regret it to this day that I didn't get to see her before. This song really hits home.
This song is basically the true story of Mike Rutherford( the guy in the white jacket playing the guitar and formerly from the band Genesis )and his awkward and argumentative relationship with his father about the direction that Mike wanted to take with his life. His father was an officer in the Royal Navy (Mike looks at his photo in the video) and wanted Mike to choose a "Socially acceptable" career he felt was more befitting to the social class he was raised in .But Mike was a bit of a Bohemian and a rebel and chose to reject that type of middle class life style and follow a more unpredictable path, which led to many tense, bitter and awkward encounters with his father whenever they met up and they could never get each other to see the other's point of view, especially as Mike felt he could never really, adequately express and explain the reasons for his choice to his father while he was still alive....And that is how it remained and was what prompted Mike to write this song many years later, after his father's passing....Pretty sad, but a great song.
You know that at your age your parents are immortal, it takes a few more years before mortality becomes a reality. I never knew my mother, shecpassed away when I was a baby. My father passed away 41 years ago on Father's Day. I miss him every day. I didn't tell you this to make you sad, but to encourage you to cherish every moment and every memory.
Epic song. Great lyrics. You'll find the instruments in most songs are split between the left and right ear, so to get the full effect intended by the artist(s), you need to wear both earpieces of the headphones.
The song, written by songwriter B. A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford, was inspired by Mike and B.A. realizing their fathers had died around the same time (Robertson's 11 days before B. A.'s son was born), and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young (11), as well. The video was filmed in October 1988 and features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom. The naval officer in the photo near the beginning is Mike's father Bill Rutherford, who was Gunnery Officer of HMS Revenge in 1940, and was a staff gunnery specialist in King George V in the final Bismarck battle.
This song (for me, anyway) is painful, powerful, and hopeful...all at once. Most times I hear it, I end up in tears. "We all talk a different language, talking in defence..." that's the line that gets me everytime. Nothing wrong with a little spiritual cleansing, right? Thank you for sharing! It's my first time here.
the third verse lyrics remind me of the day my dad died iwasnt there that morning when myy father passed away, i didnt get to tell him all the things i had to say my dad was seriously ill in hospital when we got a call to say he had taken a turn for the worse i was already to leave so i went to catch the bus, but my brother phoned me to say he had died ,just as i was about to get the bus to get to the hospital i came home gain - but i wasnt there that morning, when my father passed away
Sorry, but you saying you don't want to be sad makes no sense. Great, poignant songs like this are meant to invoke strong feelings in the listeners. The music, the lyrics, the singing (choirs included) make this song one of the best of all time. Definitely underrated by most people
After all these years and these two still use only one earbud. Buy a fricking set for each of you, use your two ears, that`s why you have two!, you can`t appreciate the music well like that.
Experiences like these are actually missed because of bad audio setup. There is a reason why audiophiles exist. They're not looking to hear or even listen to music, they want to experience it. Its literally the difference between 2D, 3D and DMT drugs lol. Oh well.
Indeed Judy!! I love upbeat music to keep me positive, but we also need the occasional sad song to just take stock and reflect on those we desperately and sadly miss.
Paul carrac is one hell of a singer. Sooooo underestimated. He is still performing punching 70. Check out another amazing singer called john Farnham, free of choice which song to react to. One of the best singer on this planet and live performer. Your the voice, was his biggest hit world wide.
5:28 thats what you got out of the song, some kids 90s jacket?you do know for some people there is a lot of meaning to the song and words, not just about making money as you 2 a holes do all the time to watch vids and comment?maybe, just maybe, get you head out of your arese and enjoy the songs you listen to once in awhile instead of being that waste of space generation!!!
Never saw you guys before. She’s cool. He smiling and bopping your head at the death of his father. I’m gonna give you some advice. You’re a child. It doesn’t make you tough to not have emotions. It makes you weak.
Best to make peace with him mate. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, and living with regret is something I do not wish upon anyone. GOD Bless you bro...
If you found this song touches one's heart and full of emotions, you should listen to "No Son of Mine" by Genesis. Mike Rutherford (the Mike in Mike & the Mechanics) is an original member of Genesis.
YOU YOUNG PEOPLE WILL NEVER GET THE DEPTH AND RESPECT A SONG LIKE THIS HAS. YOU ARE BLABBING ABOUT PEOPLE WALKING ON A STEEP HILL INSTEAD OF JUST LISTENING!!

My father has been gone 27 years and this song still tears me up. I tell everyone...if your dad's still here call him and tell him you love him....
This is my No.1 favourite song. The lyrics are so powerful and poignant.

Politely you are wrong. It was written by Scottish singer B A Robertson about him and his dad. Rutherford helped him finish it.
@@peterross767 As a longtime Genesis fan, I can confirm this is correct. The original statement is so woefully and absurdly wrong.
