  • Since the Honda Pilot is now up and running, it's time that I put in some effort to actually update the maintenance on the vehicle. Hopefully I'll be able to knock out a job every week before it gets too cold to work outside and I need to bring things into the garage. This is a fast and easy job to complete and saved about $40 over taking it into the shop for the work.

    Thank you for you video. I was pleasantly surprised at how “easy” this was to do. We have 04 & 05 pilots and we were able to get these done following your directions in about an hour for both. I am embarrassed to say but before the other day, I had no idea this part/fluid even existed. One car we have had for 3 years and the other 6 and never changed it. lol the 6 year one (04) had a fair amount of metal stuck to it and the fluid was brownish red. The 05 was pretty clean and no metal shards on magnet.

      Don' be embarassed Jennifer. Only 4 wheel drive cars have the differential and transfer case fluid to replace so many people who do their own oil changes, etc don't tend to know of this fluid change necessity. Good thing you did it yourself. The dealer rips you off for things that are simple and inexpensive to do yourself.

    Folks make sure you change the transfer case fluid as well. The itsvlocated alone side the Y pipe merge! It takes 80, 90 weight oil ..

      Keep in mind though that not all Honda Pilots have a traditional T-Case or T-Case fluid. I believe that the 03-05 models have a system that shares the ATF within the transmission to lubricate the T-Case components and you can't drain it separately. Newer models have a separate drain and fill plug and the fluid is also separate.

    You should not use the torque wrench to remove the drain plugs. This will cause the torque wrench to go out of calibration. Use a breaker bar or a ratchet.

    It might help to use a short 3/8" extension to rethread the filler plug.

    If Honda owners want to save money, no need to do the rear diff fluid every 30K. The fluid wear rate is highly dependent on usage and usually is very low. Check condition every 10K and you'll typically see that fluid is good to 60K or more. BTW - a little magnetic material is not a concern. It's 1/20th of whats on the trans plug. Side note - trans fluid is a different story. You may see wear as early as 20K miles. Install a trans cooler to extend fluid quality and reliability. Recommend only using Honda DW-1 trans fluid too. Aftermarket fluid viscosity is different enough that you will experience erratic downshifts at the least.

      Thanks for the feedback. Generally I only mention what the manual says, but yes I've gone longer on the Rear Diff in the past without issue.

      @@DIYNorth Understood. Most manuals maintenance intervals do not adjust/vary based on usage from the north pole to the south pole and everywhere in between. I only use them as a reference and adjust wisely. Sometimes they state longer than acceptable intervals too. Oil change intervals being changed from 5000 to 7500, 10000, up to 160000 is crazy. After 400 to 500 cold starts, any oil is going to be contaminated with fuel, broken down, internal engine deposit rates increase significantly as a result, so does oil consumption/burn rate and ultimately oil filter restriction is high causing bypass valves to open. Not good. Hopefully, folks will use maintenance intervals as a guide and ultimately do the right thing at the right time.

    Can you do a video on that wooden ramp? Thinking of building something similar

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  4 роки тому +4

      I probably won't do a video, but there is one on how I measured the height it needed to be to make it level, and that is the second video I made on using a line level. For the construction I just used a sheet of three quarter inch plywood, and did rip cuts at about the width of a tire, and just made them shorter and shorter to get the ramp effect. Other than that I just used wood screw to put it together.

    Hello DIYNorth! New sub over here 👍🏼Great vid! 2 questions is the thread sealant absolutely necessary? & if i dont use sealant will i wake up to a driveway full of oil stains? I’ve never seen any other vid where thread sealant was applied to any plugs. Just afraid i will accidentally make things worse

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  4 роки тому +4

      I've done it with and without thread sealant and never had a problem either way. It is more important to use new washers and correct torque spec. I have been using a small amount of sealant on things with a long change cycle recently. Also, I have a tube of sealant so I need to use if for something.

    Would old fluid make the check engine light come on? I don’t have any codes but my check engine and vtm-4 lights are on? Also I watched one video where they changed a sensor? Do you have any info on that? Thanks

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  4 роки тому

      No, I don't think that old fluid would make the light come on. If your check engine light is on there should be a code. As an example when my knock sensor was bad the check engine and VTM-4 lights came on even though the differential was fine. I would first try to determine why the check engine light is on before the VTM-4 light. Unfortunately, I have no information on a differential sensor, but if a learn something I will get back to you.

    Second washer for filler plug was installed upside down. Not sure about drain plug washer. Perhaps threads sealant would not be needed if the washers installed correctly. Just my 2 cents.

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Рік тому

      I've considered your 2 cents. I have two conclusions.
      1) It doesn't matter because its a crush washer and it will crush either way, which explains why I've never in my life had a leak from a crush washer.
      2) If it does matter you are likely wrong because the consensus appears to be that the flat side goes against the bolt and the slightly rounded side goes against the vehicle.

  • @andrewarmendariz8956

    The old fluid looks pretty clean. Is this normal. I checked the fluid on my recently acquired 2006 model and it was clean and topped off and did not concern me to change fluid. But after seeing your old fluid, want ask your opinion on what old fluid should look like vs. new.

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  4 роки тому

      I don't think that I have ever seen the fluid in the differential of this vehicle look particularly bad. To be honest I have periodically gone way past the recommended service life of this fluid and never had an issue. That might not be a great recommendation, but it has been my experience. The only way to remove the metal build up on the magnet is to remove it though, and to do that you will have to remove the drain plug. I have seen diff fluid come out looking almost black, just not in this vehicle. Generally I try to stick to the recommended schedule.

    Can you help please? A have a 2006 pilot and runs and drive fine. But when it get up to 60 start making a noise on the back on the vehicle you think this might be the problem?

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  4 роки тому

      Obviously its hard to help with a noise over the internet. But yes low Differential fluid could cause rear end noise. Have you ever had a wheel bearing changed? You need to bring it to a shop for a wheel bearing so they can use an industrial press, but the last major noise I had was solved with a new wheel bearing. Have you rotated your tires lately? The tires on my car had become insanely loud for some reason. You could do a tire rotation and see if the noise moves around the vehicle when you do that. If the noise moves to a different location you will know it was the tire. I would do the tire rotation, then the diff fluid change, while you are down there inspect the drive shaft to ensure it isn't loose, then I would go to a shop to have the rear wheel bearings looked at. But as stated it is hard to give good advice without actually hearing it.

      DIYNorth thank you for ur help. I got the tires balanced yesterday but the noise still there. Yes, I just had this problem on 2005 I bought. You can pay a dealer to reset it, or follow this procedure using the 16 pin OBD2 connector under the steering wheel. It cleared all my error lights with just a paper clip in about 10 minutes. Here's the procedure I followed. Each row of pins on the plug is labeled 1-8 and 9-16 so It's a lot easier than you might think.
      www.piloteers.org/threads/traction-control-light-causing-vsa-system-light-2007-pilot.112681/#post-1170025
      First of all you need to clear ABS errors (that is the main problem why i have failed earlier).
      1) Jump pins 4 and 9. (should already be done if you initially checked for Code 84)
      2) Press and hold the brake pedal and switch on the ignition.
      3) Wait for the ABS light to turn off and then remove your foot from the brake pedal.
      4) Wait for the ABS light to turn on, then press and hold the brake pedal again.
      5) ABS light should turn off, then remove your foot from the brake pedal.
      6) Wait for two flashes of ABS light. If it flashes it means that errors are erased.
      Check the errors (with the pins jumped) - just turn the ignition on, if ABS light does not flash, no errors are in memory.
      Now the main part.
      Do not touch the brake pedal anymore.
      1) Jump pin 9 to 4 (should already be done if you just erased your codes)
      2) Turn the ignition on, after ABS light turns off, quickly press the "VSA off" button.
      3) After ABS light turns on again, quickly press the "VSA off" button.
      4) Now shoud be a lot of different blinks and fashes and all lights ABS, VSA and triangle should turn off. The problem's solved.
      5) Open the beer bottle!
