- In an effort to get all the standard maintenance work done on my 2005 Honda Pilot, I have endeavoured to complete an automatic transmission fluid change. This took about 45 minutes, but could be done in as little as 30 minutes.

Thanks for the great video. I have a 2007 Honda Pilot. About to drive across Canada hauling a camper trailer and figured I should get everything in tip top shape before I head out. Its had about 60,000km since it was last changed 3 years ago so its definitely a bit over due.
I was occasionally lazy changing my Honda ATF. It never gave me any issues.
The fluid colour is OK, and its getting decent gas milage and shifting as it should. I'm just a bit concerned hauling the extra weight for so many kms, its going to get one heck of a workout. There's so many conflicting recommendations for changing fluid such as never flush it, only do a partial change or non at all in an older vehicle etc. I'm thinking as this fluid is still decent looking and its not much over I'll just stick with the Honda maintenance chart which recommends a full drain and refill.

@@DIYNorth thanks and it just got worse 😂 the transmission drain bolt was covered in metal particles and I mean enough that I could make another drain bolt out of it so I think I'm just going to put the old fluid back in and maybe add some Lucas stop slip fluid or put a quart new fluid in or something and pray it doesn't slip

@@DIYNorth my drive light started blinking and I had a P0700 and a P0873 I was hoping it was just low on transmission fluid or needed to be changed. I don't really know the history of the transmission fluid but I know it still had a pink tint and when I drained it you could definitely see the pink in it. My pilot has just under 280,000 miles on it.

The touq specs I use is the German scale, good-n-tight. Works every time
careful, that only works on BMW, Audi and Mercedes
If you plan on changing your transmission fluid again in the future I don't suggest putting thread seal on the plug as thread seal is meant to completely seal the threads as to not come back off.
Well I need to change the fluid sometime this summer so I'll find out soon enough if it will be a problem.
I do everything you do, but I add the fluid and remove the line from the radiator that comes to the transmission and start the truck that spits all the fluid out from the pump and whatever is in the torque converter, i shut it off when I start seen new fluid come out and then add more fluid to the level
you are more adventurous than I am. You also might get a more complete fluid change.

There is no recommended change interval on the filter. I wouldnt replace it on every change.

So I have an 05 Pilot and am thinking of changing the trans fluid (GREAT video by the way!) The trans fluid has never been changed and there are 148k miles on it. Do you think it's safe to change the fluid? I've heard arguments on both sides - some websites saying that it's too late to do it and could ruin the trans. Thanks!!
I would do the change. I have also heard that debate, something about possibly causing slippage afterward. If I were concerned about it I would just do the single drain and fill and see how it goes and then go back and do a second drain and fill a bit later. That first drain off will also give you an idea of how bad (or good) the fluid is.
But its up to you....I'm just a guy making youtube videos.
Hi, thanks for sharing this video! I just purchased a 2007 AWD pilot in really good shape with 146k miles. It drives Smooth but the previous owner told me he never changed the transmission fluid. Do you mind if I ask you if it’s necessary to replace the transmission filter when changing the transmission fluid? Thanks a lot!
No i have never seen a service interval for a transmission filter. It could be different by year though. So all I did on the 2005 I had was drain and fill.

Do you have to fill through the fill plug or can you just pour fluid down the dipstick tube? Also i thought you were supposed to check the fluid level with the car on with the engine fully warmed up and the car in park
The first two times that i did the fluid change i poured down the dip stick tube, but the tube is very narrow and it took a long time to do. You should consult the owners manual regarding if your engine is to be off or on. the manual I have on this definitely says to have the engine warmed up but off. Other vehicles and model years could be different.

No, sorry i never touched the speed sensor on the Pilot.
Hey, seems you know much about honda pilots, recently, my Honda Pilot 2005 misfire bank 1, I replaced all the spark plugs with Ngk iridium brand, One month after, it began to misfire, and VTM 4 light showed up. I removed the spark plug from Bank 1 and the brand new spark plug showed signs of burnt with black color or carbon deposits around it what do think is going on. I changed all 6 coils with the brand new one.?
Thanks but I'm not sure I can help on this one. Is the vehicle burning oil? A little browning is fine. My guide books says, to consider the engine air filter, ignition system and fuel system. Potentially worn valve guides or piston rings. Others cold be potential vacuum leaks and uneven or low compression.
My 2005 had some pretty bad compression, though I wasn't getting Misfire codes.
It might be worth a diagnostic with the advanced scanners in the garage and then just do the work yourself depending on what the issue is.

I believe that the 03-05 models have a system that shares the ATF within the transmission to lubricate the T-Case components and you can't drain it separately. Newer models have a separate drain and fill plug and the fluid is also separate.
9:21 is a dangerous/hazardous move, you may short your battery and get a spark there.
I think it would be hard with the air box in the way, but I appreciate your commitment to safety.
I have a honda pilot 2005 it through codes p2646 and p0747. My son replaced the vvt and cleaned the pressure transmission solenoid. My car drives great as long as i dont drive over 45 but then it jerks and sputters. Plus now it stopped going into reverse except for when the car cools down. He changed the transmission fluid but only once. Any help at all is appreciated
Unfortunately I don't think that I can be much help. I don't have transmission trouble shooting experience.
Hey, have you change transfer case oil on this vehicle because I was looking for my Fill and drain plugs but I just can't find them I do have the same model as this one. Thanks for any advice.
my understanding is that the Pilots from 03-05 do not have a drainable T-Case and that the lubricant comes from the ATF in the transmission. 06 and later models have a drainable T-Case with separate fluid from the ATF.

I have drained mine 3 times so far in the last month trying to get rid of all the old fluid. I never had hit the subframe when It drains just let it fly out of there.
Do you find that it is still coming out a bit dirty
@@DIYNorth Yes really dirty I got the car from a friend he never did anything but change the engine oil. 129k. Hoping the 3rd transmission fluid change will clean it out. It's shifting okay I did have to clean out A & B clutch solenoids they got little plugged up. Easy to get to below the battery tray. This one is a FWD only so far I have done the timing belt, spark plugs, and valve adjustment. Engine oil 2 times, and transmission 3 times. PS flushed a few times.
Fluid will flow better if you have the neck on top of the pour.

No i don't think that it needs to be in neutral when checking the transmission fluid. The manual that I have indicates the fluid needs to be hot, ie, drive around for a while, then with the engine off check the ATF fluid level. Basically Hot, Off, and Level. My Nissan Pathfinder recommends something totally different. Look at your service manual. Do you have a 2005 Pilot? Not all transmissions are set up the same.
You leave the funnels in while cycling thru the gears without putting fill plug back in?
No you shouldn't leave the funnels in there while running the vehicle, just like the engine oil the funnel should be pulled before starting the engine.
But I don’t have to screw on the fill bolt before starting vehicle?

@@robertkenney6002 I sold the Pilot 2 years ago when I moved but kept the Haynes Manual, I'm by no means a trained professional so I try to follow the Manual pretty closely. what it says with regards to refilling is as follows "with the engine off and the fill plug removed, add new fluid to the transaxle... Begin the refill procedure by initially adding one third of the amount drained. Then, with the engine running, add 1/2 - pint at a time (cycling the shifter through each gear position between additions) until the level is correct on the dip stick". So I'm almost certain that the fill plug was off the whole time I did this, but leaving the funnels in place when cycling the gears and unable to see them isn't something I would want to do personally. I don't really know how far you can stick something in there before you hit a moving part. I almost certainly started with more than 1/3 the amount I drained to speed things up.
Now the strange part of all this is that the ATF level check is done with the ATF HOT, and the engine OFF on this Pilot, (must be checked within 60-90 seconds of turning engine off). Check your service manual to confirm this is the case with your model.
Ultimately I never title my videos "how to" because I see a few ways to do this and achieve great success. I make "how I did it" videos. I also check levels a lot more than I show in the videos to ensure that I end up with the level very nearly perfect. Watching me work a dipstick for 10 minutes isn't very cinematic though.
So, it's ok to leave fill bolt off when turning car on and cycling threw gears?
So, I did leave it off when doing the gear changes with the vehicle stationary. There is no reason not to put it back on other than saving some time. If you are concerned just put it back on quickly before cycling through the gears. If you are going to take the filler plug on and off several times I would suggest that you don't use the new crush washer until you are happy with the fluid level and ready to seal it up permanently. All that said it's really up to you on what you are comfortable with.

Maybe just screw it on hand right so you don’t keep tighten the used crush washer over and over but I would feel a lot more comfortable putting it back on hand right than leaving it off but idk
Another question - how do you read the transmission dip stick? From what I saw it looked like the transmission fluid was only at the 1st hole? Isn’t it suppose be at the second?

The upper hole is the fill marker. I very much dislike this type of dip stick because the fluid level can be pretty hard to see sometimes. The dip sticks with the cold and hot readings that have a rough checkered surface are so much easier to use.
I see, yeah it just looked like you’re fluid was sitting on the bottom hole. I’ll watch again
@@robertkenney6002 it may not have been in the portion of the video that was posted. Since a lot of the videos are very long, or sometimes certain shots don't turn out there is a chance that I might edit the clip and it might not actually show the dip stick at the correct fluid level within the video.

P0172 Code is "Fuel too Rich".
P0175 Code is "Fuel too Rich Front Cylinder Head"
So says my service manual.
What can I do if the plug is stuck. It wont open. Should i spray a little bit of wd-40?
I would use some type of penetrant spray and see if that helps.

Same here snapped a harbor freight ratchet handle lol even used a impact Milwaukee nothing, I used a3/8 with extensions and a jack handle and came right off
Is there any chance of ruing my transmission by doing the simple drain and refill on my 2005 Honda Pilot?
I suppose there is a chance of ruining anything that you endeavour to work on when it comes to your vehicle. I've seen comments that transmissions slip after a complete fluid flush. They make additives for that as well, but I've never used them so I can say if they work well or not.
@LactoseTheIntolerant I've only used their Oil additive. I haven't used it for a while though, since my 89 Ford Probe died. I think Lucas makes decent products and their Transmission Slip Stop gets some positive reviews. I would try it if I had minor tranny slipage.
You don't need all that thread sealant most drain plugs don't even need to be screwed in all the way..and your risking that sealant mixing with your fluid
I generally use thread sealant, but I think I'm pretty clear in the video that it is an option not a requirement. I've had no issues with it. More importantly though, I completely disagree that most drain plugs don't need to be screwed in all the way. I am yet to see one that doesn't have a recommended torque specification and as such not only do they need to be in all the way, they also need to be properly tightened to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification. Anything else would be incorrect. Unless I'm not understanding your comment as you intended.
@@jeromequivy2242 the Haynes manual I have says 36 foot pounds for the drain plug and 33 foot pounds for the filler plug. That would be for Pilots from 2003 to 2007.

I'm not sure. Are you saying that the automatic transmission isn't shifting by itself, and that you have to manually shift through the gears in order to get it into a gear above 2nd gear?
hi does your 2005 pilot 2wd or 4WD besause you said you used 3.8 litter of transmission fluid but in web say 2wd has 4 quarts or 3.8 litter and 4wd should have 3.5 quarts or 3.3 litters,, its so confusing what you saying in you video,,,, just to clarify only for the other people will gonna watch you video. thank you

Yes I had many problems. Non stop problems really. Over all it was good to me, but in the last year it seemed like something was breaking every week. Edmonton Alberta has a hard environment for any vehicle, and ultimately the metal will rust, and plastic parts will become brittle and break. If you are in more favorable conditions it might be better for those plastic pieces. I would do a pretty long test drive, 30 minutes or so and bring an OBD II code reader. The one thing that I noticed on many 2005/2006 Pilots (for sale on kijiji/craigs list) is that the Catalytic converters were registering below efficiency when they had 300000 km on the odometer. If you live in an area with mandatory emissions tests, this could set you back big time. Here in Canada Honda wants $1000 per catalytic converter (there are 2 up front) just parts. So you could be out $2000 just for parts to fix that. Lots of people were indicating that their Pilot was showing those codes in the listing, but with an OBD II they could temporarily turn off the Check engine light.
Most things are pretty easy to work on with the 2005 Pilot....its no Tesla. With some skill and an ability to find cheap parts (ROCKAUTO) it not that bad of a vehicle.
Oh also make sure the airbags were upgraded. Apparently many of them have an airbag that will shoot metal pieces into your face and kill you. Honda will change them for free.
DIYNorth wow I got a 2005 Honda Pilot not that long ago 130,000 miles and I was very happy with my purchase but after reading this I got kinda worried. I’m planning on keeping this pilot for a long time. The only problem I got was an oxygen sensor for bank 2 and I changed it ASAP and nothing has ever came up since. Should I be worried?

No, like I said it was overall good to me, and I had mine to 210,000 miles. It just seemed like that was the end of the line for that particular Pilot. I would be pretty confident that any Honda Pilot could easily get 200k miles or more. It's easy enough to work on, parts are fairly cheap and available (except the catalytic converters) and there are plenty of vehicles in the scrap yards to get parts from extra cheap. Acura MDX, Pilots, Odysseys, etc all have pretty interchangeable parts. I have no regrets buying it. I paid $15,000 Canadian, and had it for 11 years. So overall very reasonable.

Wrong. The video is exactly as advertised and at the level of completeness I intended.
The process outlined on page 1-23 of the repair manual was followed exactly.
If you have concerns I recommend you take them up with the Honda engineers that set the fluid change procedure.
Torque convert as well? twice? Is it better to do this?
Yes I believe that it is preferred to do it twice allow for a more complete fluid change.

@@GayJedii yeah you would need to buy double the fluid of a single drain and fill. The torque converter wont drain when the transmission drain plug is removed. It will retain the old fluid. When you do the first drain and fill, then drive around a bit, the fluid in the torque converter will mix with the new fluid. Then a second drain and fill will result in the removal of a lot more contaminates
