The faster guitars and leading drums push the song toward while the delivery of the singing and slower lead guitar pull it back leaving a little space in the count where it’s empty so it’s literally making your ear drag on you push forward all the while it’s holding on very great music theory here

My interpretation of this song is that Jimmy and the people he identifies with are "the waiting", meaning that they're waiting for the Jesus of suburbia to come die for their sins and protect them, but decide "the Jesus of suburbia is a lie". The song fades into St. Jimmy, which is him taking charge and leading the march to change or acceptance. Spoiler alert! He's martyred later.
I have not listened to this song since I was 16 -now I'm 23- and my heart just warmed up remembering how broken I was and that now I'm in a so much better place. This song was one of my favorites.
