To clean the area around/under the keycaps I recommend using an old (cleaned) toothbrush. Let it dry first if you want to get rid of dust, crumbs and pet fur, or use with warm water or isopropyl for liquid spills. I just finished cleaning off my main keyboard using that method. Thanks for the video Paul!
SpyRos13 Why would you not want your input devices to be of high quality, they're just as important as everything if not more so. Do you cheap out on a mouse too?

Best guide! I watched this upon release and prayed I'd never need it. A friend dropped Coke Cola on an ASUS ROG keyboard that has Cherry MX speed silver switches, an analog volume controller and some membrane multimedia keys. I got I to work again by fully taking it apart and soaking the bare PCB/plate/switches combo on warm water and dish soap. Also the case. Gently rubbed it with a soft brush (used for cleaning under one's nails). After thoroughly rinsing, used the alcohol inside the switch method to make sure the water inside would evaporate. Turned the board upside down and pushed the switches with my palm to help liquids get out. After 36hs of drying it works like a charm. Needs lubbing on the stabs, but that aside, it's like new
Thank you Paul, I will definitely save this video in my favourites just in case of emergencies like spillage or regular maintenance cleaning. I have the K95 too so this will definitely be the first video to watch. :D
Logitech suggests, at least on their G-series keyboards, if you spill liquid on the keyboard, that you *DO NOT* tip it upside down to get the liquid out. The keyboards come with spill channels and drainage holes which will allow most liquid to flow out, and because of the keycaps you won't get liquid in your switches. What liquid is dried on, from non-water liquids, can be easily cleaned out later. If you flip it upside down, then the liquid may get inside the bottoms of your keycaps. When you turn the keyboard back over, it may then run down into your switches. I don't know a ton about keyboards, though I've had each of mine apart a few times, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
bbryant0620 Spilled chocolate milk on my G710+ took the caps off where it happened dryed it off and flipped it upside down checked back in a few days and it was working
Wild_Gaming It is a great keyboard. That is what I have too. My only complaint is the occasional double space from the spacebar and the coating peeling off of the keycaps. I spilled sugary coffee in mine a couple weeks back. All I did was let it sit. I'm too lazy to clean it out again, since I already cleaned it about 2 weeks previous to that. However, the right control key is sticking a little. The first press every couple of days is tough, it has to break loose. Other than that, though, everything works fine.
bbryant0620 Yea after what I did to mine the left shift is a little tough which makes some games a little tough like CS:GO... Mine doesn't double space, also the coating hasn't come off of mine at all. Might be because you have had yours a little longer, I might upgrade to the corsair K70 RGB though
+The Not everyone has a compressor at home nor am I going to pay $250 for one just to clean my keyboard with it. A can of compressed air is only $5 and does the job just fine.
thanks a ton! i didn't spill anything, my keeb was just getting dirty with all my gamer filth(tm). followed this video and now the thing looks better than the day i got it, i'm super happy. everything feels smoother too
I once spilled beer on my G710+, some buttons on the numpad stopped working, so I just gave it a nice shower in the sink, with the buttons off. I let it dry over night on a radiator, popped it in the next morning and everything worked as new. Might just have been lucky, though.
+Central Intelligence Agency I spilled hot cup noodles on my G710. I bricked that, so I ordered a new one. 3 hours into using it, I spilled milk on it. I gave it a solvent bath, and it worked again. But, still getting some unregistered keys. May need to buy some lube.
You helped me save my Corsair K65 Compact. Not the most flamboyant keyboard out there but nicely built with brushed aluminum. Writting this on my "old membrane" keyboard. Will wait for it to dry! fingers crossed.
I worked IT at a small company and we had an old dishwasher that we removed the heating coil from and ran the plumbing to a big jug of distilled water. We took dirty keyboards, gave out loaners and ran the washer, then letting them air dry for about two weeks just to make sure. The contaminants on the contacts are what you really have to watch out for. Mechanical keyboards are a different story though, there's a lot more tiny spaces for water to intrude.
Tip - Get a datavac electric duster ED 500 (they even make an ESD model) and cut the drying time down to next to nothhing. Works wonders for simply dusting your keyboard, cleaning fans & rads cleaning printers, camera lenses and tons of other things.
Thank you for this video and link to Ripster's guide. I've had an old first gen Razer BlackWidow Ultimate with Cherry MX blue switches sitting in my closet for a couple of years now, after having spilled some soda on it, and even after disassembly and cleaning, having been unable to get some of the switches to work 100% like they had prior to the spill. Now I have renewed hope to dig that keyboard out and give it a solvent bath to see if it can still be saved. It'd be nice to be able to use that $150 keyboard again as a backup or test bench keyboard. I've been using a Mionix mech keybd in it's place, and really can't stand it. The Cherry MX "black" mech switches feel like mush.
I'm amazed of some critics - one of the best video I have seen on u t, you get on with it speed up lengthy stuff make it entertaining very clear video and your fast speaking is still ok for me and this is not often I can catch what is said. The volume was good for me too. Not sure if I would go to that length though. For me no spilling just daily dust...I really should think of a good cover for it. I just watched it to get an idea about removing the keys! Thanx for a good effort..
fucking cat spilled water all over my k70 and i had to unscrew it, it had 2 hidden screws that were a bitch to find and it took like 3 hours to scrub the fucker down and swab it with rubbing achohol before the keys started to work again. Moral of the story, don't keep water next to your keyboard at night with a cat in your room...
For folks not looking to disassemble but mostly just a light dusting type clean to remove hair or random dirt that air dusters can't remove try a normal run of the mill paint brush. Helps having it off for a more aggressive clean without worrying about random keys doing something while on but yeah, just run it back and forth up and down between the rows normal the brush is stiff enough to drag any minor hair out or dust which gives it a nice clean look without fully taking it apart if that's all you are looking for.
Dude I was having a panic attack while watching this video the screen started to show random yellow and blue clicker lines and I was freaking out my refurbished 144hz monitor was going out right after the warranty ended lol luckily tho I exited full screen and it was just the video.
I haven't purchased a keyboard in almost 20 years. It's nice to see that everything is pretty much the same when it comes to cleaning the newer keyboards.
going to sell my corsair rgb strafe with cherry mx blue switches, and this video help me a bunch to get my corsair keyboard back to almost looking like new. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
for stuck switches, if nothing else works, including submersion, you may have to gently pull the switch itself apart to fully clean it out and get it to work correctly again.
I got a pc off craigslist and came with a mouse and keyboard, the keyboard literally had weed inside of it along with a bit of wax and a shroom... like what? XDDD
I spilled a bottle of apple juice on mine and now realize the worse thing I did was turn it upside down to drain it. That only caused the juice to get up under the keys and into the switches, requiring key removal and cleaning each individual switch. I could have saved myself a lot of work by keeping it upright and just unplug it. Then spray it down with some non-residue electronics cleaner. The keys act like umbrellas over the switches so just let if run off sideways, don't flip the keyboard upside down.
I spilt a lot of tea on my Corsair K60 (almost identical to the one in the video). I followed almost the same procedure as you describe, however some keys generated multiple characters or wierd false codes. I disassembled the keyboard entirely, removing all the little screws, including the one hidden behind the corsair label and the one hidden to the right of the volume control (found that out by googling!). I unplugged the various cables and removed all the circuit boards, leaving on the main board. I tried cleaning with water and alcohol. It was left to dry then I partially re-assembled it (no keycaps or case). Many more keys now worked correctly but I was getting sets of 3 adjacent keys which were giving the same false character. I think that I will try flushing with distilled(?) water to get underneath the PCB then leave to try. I looked for a replacement K60 on Ebay and was shocked by the price. If your keyboard survived the coffee spill with no ingress to the PCB area then you were very lucky.
distilled or de-mineralized water is a good idea as it will leave no mineral deposits, thx for the idea personally if they recommend putting little water in the switch with straw I can't see how putting all of them in a water can hurt make sure to press each of them a few times and then turn them upside down on a towel and let the water seep out and dry I might even try something like wd40 bath....might ruin the tactileness of tactile switches though I did a coffee spill and about 5-10 were affected so I might try that with them....still have about 20 spare switches
@@HeadBassVTEC Ha ha I see you commented on a posting I made 4 years ago. The keyboard works and is connected to my old PC. I did eventually buy a new Corsair keyboard, but I hated the LEDs and the weird layout of the numbers, so I swapped the caps from the old Corsair to the new one :-) . The old keyboard was eventually fixed with more cleaning, but my memory is foggy. I do remember that all the tiny screws were a right royal PITA !
Wow nice to see you have your own channel I remember watching a video of you when I was young when you were on newegg building a computer which inspired me to build my own. Thanks! Awesome channel!
I love you, i just spilled a soda on my keyboard accidently, got lucky and missed almost everything, except my alt key was gummed up really bad.. this just got me going again. Upvoted
I have a Corsair k70 and just cleaned it. I do and have for some time used Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, a can of air and a feather duster. No damage or discoloration, works great
My experience with CoolerMaster TriggerZ mechanical keyboard (Cherry MX brown keys): coffee spill with lots of sugar in it made keys sticky. No method from this video worked. I tried cleaning with water, hot water, alcohol, hot water with mild detergent, they all seemed to work, but after few hours of drying the keys were sticky again! Even after 5-6 attempts, again I had sticky keys. The method that worked for me is: Remove the key caps, shower the keyboard in the shower/bath tub with hot water (around 60 degrees, too hot for my hands but not boiling), pressing the stickiest keys several times while showering. Dry for 2 days. Every few hours after showering test the keys (without key caps) and if they are sticy - repeat. After showering and drying, all keys are working perfectly. At least in my case.
Step 1: throw old keyboard Step 2: buy mechanical gaming key board Step 3: if you want to clean your new keyboard then put it in the sink because all gaming keyboards are water proof.
So... If i where to.. lets say (ofc i wouldnt do such a stupid thing...) but if i where to turn on the keybord before it was fully dry.. and now my tab key isn't registering at all.. what can i do? as far as my knowlege about electronic shizzle goes it sould be able to work again when dry.. or what? sorry about my english if there is any mistakes. im danish! D:
apocalypseap it's just that it either doesn't register at all, or registers twice, and usually lags behind other keys, it's just slow. I also notices, when I was testing the key, that when I hold on it softly, it registers n's ok, but when I put a little more force on the key, it will not register AT ALL. What to do, if you need more information I will be glad i someone helps me :( it's appreciated.
So I've been having a problem with TKL mechanical keyboard (without numpad). It started with the key '7'. The problem is that, the key doesn't register i.e. when I tap on it normally, it doesn't registered. I have to tap hard or multiple times to get the key registered once. It was fine when it happened with the key '7' as I didn't used it that much. But recently it happened with the key 'N' and key 'T'. And you can imagine how frustrating that can be. Just count the times I have typed 'N' and 'T'. Yes, when it happens to a new key, the previous key gets fixed, in this case '7' and 'N'. Or sometimes what would happen is that when I tap the previous affected key, it gets registered twice or thrice, for ex : when I tap 'N' once, it gets typed two or three times in a row. It keeps jumping around between keys, now spacebar is affected as well. So, should I clean my keyboard? Or get it checked out from the manufacturer? I see it's a bit dirty, but I wanna be sure that cleaning it will actually help me, instead of spending all that time and get nothing at the end. The keyboard is one year old btw. PS - Don't worry about me, I typed this comment on my phone.
omfg u're a God I had a key i mean 2 keys SPACE BAR and SHIFT BAR not traveling like the other keys does sometimes it got stuck but after doing the thing with alcohol u helped me out srs man ty
Christopher Snow Wouldnt risk it unless you want to spend another 60 - 300 odd on your next keyboard (if so get 6gv2 either black or red cherry mx switches.)
Amazing video!!! I cant believe it has any dislikes at all, this was not only incredibly informative but it saved me from having to RMA my keyboard (which i thought was broken). Thanks again for this tutorial video!!!!
I also "purposely" dumped coffee all over my keyboard. I thought it was dead, but after I let it dry for a week, it was alive! Just like your keyboard, many of the keys were sticky. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
My w would sometimes not work or type wwww ww although it only clicked once. Your method of dropping a bit of water into the mechanism helped to fix it! Thank you!
I've done my keyboard a couple of days ago, but with a completely different technique : I used a microfiber towel and soapy water for the bulk of it, and some swabs for the spaces between switches. Microfiber towels is pretty much the panacea for cleaning anything. It's really effective, doesn't scratch the surface at all, and doesn't leave a lot of moisture behind if used wet.
I spilled ice tea on my keyboard. For about two days I was using the nightmare which is the non-mechanical keyboard with their inferior "dome switches". I plugged it back in just now and it's working again. CHERRY MX FOREVER.
I put my corsair k63 keyboard on to a dishwasher, since i had a little accident with it. I can say if you want to risk the dishwasher challenge make sure you leave it out to dry for at least 3-5 days, after that it works fine afterwards.
lol I spilled coffee and water all over my keyboard and I didnt do any of that. I just grabbed the keyboard, turned it upside down and started shaking it. Im using it to type this and it still works perfectly. no stiff/sticky keys.
Thank you so much. It helped me a lot ! It's drying right now and I think I will put them in place on sunday, my next day off. I hope everything will work again and no coke is left.. :D Thank you!
I bought a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate a few days ago and I was so careful with it lol. I unpacked it like I am defusing a bomb xD I plug it in, play some CS:GO, kinda wanted to jizz on it because it looked so freaking sexy, aaaaand I spilled water on it while drinking...yeah, I am such a freaking idiot. right? xD But thankfully nothing happened :D I hope someone will learn from this tutorial ;) Great video :)
The straw really helps me with that pesky backwards slash key (below your backspace key) not responding or “chattering” (double typing, I press it once it it does this: “\\”) when pressed. Just pressing and blowing on it doesn't work, using a straw with a droplet of water to depress it, wet it and blowing through it so that the air directly goes into the keyswitch seems to work perfectly.
usually the warranty will be already gone before you need to do this. A spill could be said to void the warranty itself, whether or not you try to do repairs. Otherwise, it is years before this is needed, unless your usage is incredibly heavy.
Why? Disassembly is completely different, depending on which keyboard you have. And it is trivially simple: 1) remove screws and open up the back 2) remove screws of secondary PCBs (if you have these) 3) clean.
To clean the area around/under the keycaps I recommend using an old (cleaned) toothbrush. Let it dry first if you want to get rid of dust, crumbs and pet fur, or use with warm water or isopropyl for liquid spills. I just finished cleaning off my main keyboard using that method.

If your keyboard survived the coffee spill with no ingress to the PCB area then you were very lucky.
distilled or de-mineralized water is a good idea as it will leave no mineral deposits, thx for the idea
personally if they recommend putting little water in the switch with straw I can't see how putting all of them in a water can hurt
make sure to press each of them a few times and then turn them upside down on a towel and let the water seep out and dry
I might even try something like wd40 bath....might ruin the tactileness of tactile switches though
I did a coffee spill and about 5-10 were affected so I might try that with them....still have about 20 spare switches
I do remember that all the tiny screws were a right royal PITA !
this was quite satisfying to watch and i dont know why
Why am I watching this?
My reason: How do you get barbecue sauce out of a keyboard over a month after the initial spill?
I love how casually he mention “engaging other various activities”.
mad props for not using a puller for all those.
Upvoted
I spilled coffee on my $100 keyboard and I got so scared, it works luckily
we just gonna act like there’s not three hands and a knife at 7:28
yeah bruh 🤣 🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10/10 people don't pull their keycaps off when they clean their keyboards.
***** That's only one of the reasons, the other is that it's over a 100 keys.
+Outbak03 I just spilled milk on the number one key and all the numbers don't work.
Greatgodzeus HD That was no milk, don't lie.
+Cestarian Inhabitant ^^
Seems I'm a bit of a hypocrite, I pulled off all the keycaps on my old G510 before putting it to storage :O who'd have thought, right? :D
I have a Corsair k70 and just cleaned it. I do and have for some time used Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, a can of air and a feather duster. No damage or discoloration, works great
Excellent guide for cleaning properly a keyboard. Thanks a lot Pal.
this is why i always wash my hands before touching my precious black widow chroma x and chroma mamba

@@laithkattan678 I'm just scared to pluck out the keys. (pluck right?)
No
My experience with CoolerMaster TriggerZ mechanical keyboard (Cherry MX brown keys): coffee spill with lots of sugar in it made keys sticky.
This same up in my recommended feed in 2021. Won’t complain!
Step 1: throw old keyboard
Step 2: buy mechanical gaming key board
Step 3: if you want to clean your new keyboard then put it in the sink because all gaming keyboards are water proof.
Step 1: Dishwasher
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit
So... If i where to.. lets say (ofc i wouldnt do such a stupid thing...) but if i where to turn on the keybord before it was fully dry.. and now my tab key isn't registering at all.. what can i do? as far as my knowlege about electronic shizzle goes it sould be able to work again when dry.. or what? sorry about my english if there is any mistakes. im danish! D:
The answer is.. maybe. Just unplug it and wait for it to dry more and see if that works.
apocalypseap it's been more than 2 months from my incident and my n key is not working correctly, but it's working, what should i do?
Sami Haddad You say it's not working correctly? What do you have to do to get it to work?
apocalypseap it's just that it either doesn't register at all, or registers twice, and usually lags behind other keys, it's just slow. I also notices, when I was testing the key, that when I hold on it softly, it registers n's ok, but when I put a little more force on the key, it will not register AT ALL. What to do, if you need more information I will be glad i someone helps me :( it's appreciated.

its dead. i bought a new one :c wasted 200 dollers only had it for like 1 month
Um... do these techniques work for "biological protein spills" ?
Christopher Snow Wouldnt risk it unless you want to spend another 60 - 300 odd on your next keyboard (if so get 6gv2 either black or red cherry mx switches.)

Amazing video!!! I cant believe it has any dislikes at all, this was not only incredibly informative but it saved me from having to RMA my keyboard (which i thought was broken). Thanks again for this tutorial video!!!!
Nice to know as a reviewer. Tips is always nice to get
I spilled lemonade on my Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, and I used the keys where I spilled it so much that it got unstuck.

Some people might care. Also, Razer products aren't bad, they're just overpriced, I got my keyboard on amazon for a sweet deal.
TheCALico BlackWidow Ultimate should honostly be like $60. You should've went with a better option like CM or Corsair
TheWaterBottleCritic
Sure, but my keyboard works great and I like it.
TheWaterBottleCritic Razer products are not bad, they're really good. Their headphones and mice are decent, but they are really good with keyboards.
Jacob Hylén their keyboards are absolute shit. keycool84 blues baby
I may have gotten some... bodily fluids... under my keys. I blame sexy youtube thumb nails. Damn you Awesomesauce News. ;)
You wouldn't recommend putting the whole keyboard into the dishwasher, but what about putting the keycaps inside the cutlery part of the dishwasher?
I also "purposely" dumped coffee all over my keyboard. I thought it was dead, but after I let it dry for a week, it was alive! Just like your keyboard, many of the keys were sticky. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

Hey I just spilled coffee all over my KBParadise V80 Cherry MX Clear... How convenient!
My w would sometimes not work or type wwww ww although it only clicked once. Your method of dropping a bit of water into the mechanism helped to fix it! Thank you!
Step 1: use a keycap remover
Step 2: realise you’ve chipped the paint of the keycap and stop
Step 3: Give up and use a towel
My keys come off super easy with my hands.

But will it work on an opto-mech keyboard?

I don't know why, but I find this video so satisfying.
If the coffee was before the water, the water may have cleaned it. Just saying.

Sorry, seems like I missed your comment :D I am absolutely happy with it, I can definitely recommend it. :)
6:50 so i watched 7 minutes of this, for nothing. thanks.
Why? Disassembly is completely different, depending on which keyboard you have. And it is trivially simple: 1) remove screws and open up the back 2) remove screws of secondary PCBs (if you have these) 3) clean.
