These designs feel so right in the different styles, mostly it feels like with newer designs the artists don’t know what to exactly do with Yang but these flowy/ baggy aspects in just the right places makes her character in my opinion
huh I understand that. I think she could actually look amazing in brown and if you took looks from real world fashion, and cleverly put in yellow accents. I think I just don't like how the team at the executed putting Yang in brown. Very unique take tho most ppl say "brown leather for motorcycling" and "brown for the three bears from her fairytale"
Yang is supposed to have an Aviator look, hence why she has Aviator glasses as well. It explains the brown leather jacket and her overall style. A freedom lover.
I don't mind Yang wearing some brown, and even a brown jacket; I just think that they don't balance it well enough with yellow. Like she is always SWIMMING in tan/brown and it's just like the "yellow signature colour" thing is completely absent as result

12:02 i think the purple in the vacuo design works perfectly! since blake and yang would be officially together by the time they reach vacuo it really feels like you brought that into the design, since before in all her previous designs she only had a purple bandana tying her together with blake your designs are really pretty, and for the qipao one when you said taiyang wasn't chinese just based off his design i'd disagree since his name is chinese. i think since rwby is very anime adjacent with how they design characters, a character doesn't need to look a certain way to be an ethnicity!

I love qipao and gold armor (14:04)! These two have a fantasy touch to them and also look more culturally diverse, especially the qipao one (like in JNPR, with Pyrrha being in Greece-inspired outfit and Ren in Chinese) But all of the designs look good, I wish I could desigb my characters like you...
OH. MY. GOLD. The armor Yang is by far my favorite! The protected limbs but also the float fabric is gorgeous! And the gold detailings with a hint of red just takes the cake 🤩

Look look look. I don’t h a t e the browns but I do very much see your point lol. Yang is my fave, her party girl archetype that was revealed to just be the surface (like Weiss’s rich pompous attitude and Blake’s quiet shy one) of her was cool but was never all of her. She grew to be more in the story and her outfits had to reflect that with a more matured grounded look… but brown?? Yellow is very loud and to me the oranges make it feel more at home. But the purple in her eyes that call back Blake can be used to tone down the yellow as well like you said. And that color is completely neglected in terms of costume design elements for what?? Shes the most supportive teammate so it’d make sense to have all her teams colors along with her own. You’re inspiring me to try my hand at it too lol
6:10 I love this design, I had come up with a similar frilly top “Summer/Vacuo” style Yang a few months ago but scrapped it because I felt it wasn’t “Yang” enough, but seeing this design really convinced me otherwise!

Hey. I'm new here 😅 and just came across this video. I just wanted to say I really love your redesigns of Yang. It's beautiful, stylish, and it fixes the whole issue of Yang just having brown and orange. I wish the rwby designers made use of yellow, black and white with some red accents in for her designs (but they don't sadly..). My favourite one was the first one that you showed in this video. I liked the other designs to and the idea of putting armour on Yang so she can deliver devasting kicks to enemies in combat and also look stylish while doing it is a clever idea. I love it.

I'm a bit too attached to the brown and long flowing hair to fully embrace a lot of these, but I do appreciate a lot of thought and effort you put into them.
@@ToastyGhostie-np9bd I guess one of the reasons I was never bothered with the lack of yellow in her outfit is that her massive blonde hair more than makes up for it. Plus, I think the brown compliments the hair quite well. My favourite Yang design is without a doubt the volume 5 to 6 version. However, I can not say the same for Blake, who I think dresses in way too much white for my liking, especially in later volumes. Her black hair doesn't pop the same way Yang's does, and thus, her being 'black' themed is not nearly as apparent. I personally would have given her more darker colours for her outfits. Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I just find character design, and especially character redesign, really interesting, and I needed to rant a little.

@@Flufux no I actually completely agree that v4 onward Blake designs are exceedingly lacking. I especially dislike her V7 outfit because they went for a "cyber ninja" and I feel like that was very out of left field for the character? Also her hair in V7 onwards is like dark grey and I think it looks bad shape wise too :(

Your process is thorough and you really take into account the circumstances you are designing for. That’s professional thinking there. Second, I LOVE the designs. I do wish we got more fashion in RWBY, this video is really scratching that itch for me. I really want to see some of these designs in the actual show now lol Third! I’m subscribing.
These are really good !! Here’s some constructive feedback : I think titling it ‘I redesigned Yang 7 times’ rather than ‘artist’ it would be better because I don’t really care about some artist but if you use first person then it draws me in to a persona connection immediately. Also, although the video wasn’t too long by any means , I think it would be even more watchable to a general audience if it was like half the length - like bang bang bang here’s the designs .
I'm surprised you liked the winter one. That one seems to have mixed reactions. Some people think it's too much, and I have grown less fond of it overtime as a result. So I really appreciate your comment :3

I was honestly kinda worried about these redesigns stepping too far away from Yang's inherently masculine nature, but I'm so happy I was wrong! I adore the majority of these, but especially "Magical Girl Yang" and "Mechanic Pants Yang" ❤
I think the reason they went with brown for one of her main colors is because she started out as a reference to Goldilocks and the Three bears! So the brown is the bear portion, plus I feel like so many of us associate black and yellow with bees it might have been a little confusing to some. Your designs are really cute though! I love how you style hair.

Yeah. I have some ideas for Jaune. Idk if it's considered sacrilege, but I want to give a Jaune a weapon of my own design and simplify his colour palette. His design has a LOT of colours fighting for attention imo As for Ren and Nora I have less design ideas; suggestions are welcome!!!! Also what weather? Temperate, winter or summer

you're telling me that yang is going to be fighting in HEELS and flowy flappy clothing like this ? i feel like some of these designs easily dont mesh with her actual personality, she's a tomboy, not chic. theres definitely 2 or 3 that are good, but the others I dont really understand.
I think these are all great designs in and of themselves, and it's clear you put a lot of work into them and a lot of thought. My only problem is... not a single one of them actually felt like Yang. They all felt like someone else. I do not know if that was maybe just because your personal style is more delicate than the one they use for her in the show, or if you were trying to lean too heavily into making her glamourous and pretty rather than practical and sporty, but there feels like there is something missing that really sells her fiery attitude and that she can often be stubborn. To me the pre-design to her winter wear outfit is actually the one that comes the closest to matching her silhouette and her vibe. The final jacket seems way to cumbersome for her fighting style, with way to much material to snag on things, and something she would likely ditch as soon as a battle actually started. Most of these outfits feel like something Wiess would buy for her, not pieces Yang would buy herself. Sorry, I don't want to sound like I am bashing your efforts, but one of the most important things when making alternate outfits for a character, or redesigning them is to identify their personality traits and the key elements of their design that make them who they are or how they show who they are. While here palette could be changed to be only yellows, whites and blacks, I never had a problem with there being browns in her design because they serve the same purpose as white, grey and black. They can act as neutrals in the design that other colors can then act as the focus around.
I appreciate the constructive criticism! The Yang I have in my mind could be different from the Yang you have in your mind? Like I like V2 party girl Yang in her hunter outfit where she wears I suppose high fashion even though she's fighting the Paladin - however especially in V9 her character has certainly changed. Now she wears chunky bomber jackets and stuff far less skin tight - is the only way I can think of saying that. Saying that neutrally! Not like that's a terrible thing. I really loved her portrayal in V2 and all my designs kinna branch of there. I mean I certainly wouldn't say there is no Yang in my designs - especially in #3 and #4 I feel like her more fun, sunny self is present. But if you feel that way that's okay! Thanks for watching and commenting! It truly means a lot to me! 🥰
@@ToastyGhostie-np9bd That was just observation I'd made about the character's personality/theme from watching the show, like, checklist of traits, but I also haven't watched some of the more recent seasons (need to get caught up), and I suppose it's very possible she's loosened up some and become more interested in things like fashion and glam. Maybe Wiess has rubbed off on her? XD I guess I will have to see the later seasons and then see if things match up from there.

@@ToastyGhostie-np9bd yeah the first look is just a recolor of Ruby's mistral look and the updated look while a vast improvement for summer in my opinion it could use some serious touch ups or a complete overhaul to make summer stand out from ruby a little better
Off note: I believe browns and other earthy colors were used in Yang’s design as, under an RGB system, those colors are composed of only reds and greens, with little to no blue. The same is true of yellow, which is maximum red and green without blue. The same is true of orange. This acts as a good compromise, allowing different colors while still being in the same-ish ballpark as yellow, and it makes her look a tad bit more realistic and mature than the other characters. Could be wrong/jumping at stuff I understand, but either way your designs are also good and well thought out from a color-design perspective.
Whyyy is your icon "this man" Cuurrrssseedddd 😨😱 I am glad you like my designs! My thought on the brown is that it makes perfect sense; Yang also has some leather-jacket, motorcycle, rebel thing going on from what I have seen in other comments too, which is why the brown is there. My only thought is like, there has got be more aesthetic ways to incorporate the brown even so. Like the way the brown is designed to be patchy with multiple different browns just all looking like a mess on her torso, fighting for attention --- is not the only way to design her with brown. But that's just me 💖🙏😇 But you are by all means 100% allowed to love the brown, and all of Yang's looks, just a matter of opinion 💖🙏😇
Was excited to look into this, but kinda bummed when you started going into "Monty's vision" stuff, and I broadly disagree with the premise "Yellow hair, yellow clothes, yellow everything is good" as I find almost every single color dominated character to look awful. The Precure one is a good example, she looks like a lemon drop not a stylish characters; meanwhile one of your other examples don't really work cos Mami's top is white and her skirt is a totally different shade to her hair. & given several of my friends adore the more butch direction Yang's been taken in over the borderline fanservice outfit from V1, the "No feminine is a problem" part just kinda bums me out.
Oh I guess it seems we have opposite tastes! I like Yang to have her party girl with hints of masculinity! I also do adore the magical girl aesthetic where 1 character is a colour and that's their whole "thing". My only thought is that my Yangs all have like a pretty dominant neutrals like #2, #4, #5, #6 black is very present #1 has black and white #3 and especially #7 have lots of white? Like that's where ya lose me? I agree Yang would look terrible in literally all yellow! That's why I put her in a LOT of white and black. I do feel Monty was interested in making a show where each of his characters had a colour unique to them that they were named after, too. Not to say that being strict to Monty's aesthetic is the only way to design these characters, or trying to use his name to insult the current character designers! They are extremely talented artists and they design whatever they want, truly. But yeah, I think we both have different opinions on Yangs character and what's beautiful - but that's okay 💖 We just have different ideas on what looks good. Apologies for the belated response, @ToastyGhostie-np9bd I was not actually expecting a reply XD I think we very much do have opposite tastes as I don't feel Yang never was a "Party girl beyond putting on a veneer of it for Juniors Bar (While ordering a drink she didn't drink with super low alcohol content) Or setting up the dance and claiming to be turning heads, but then not actually participating in it (Instead choosing to host & be a wallflower, in a very conservative dress as she seems to hate being ogled.) I was talking less about the redesigns there and more the concept and examples provided, sorry for being unclear. He did, but he also said that he wanted a show where characters revealed layers of themselves over time rather than just being how they were presented upon arrival. Plus, at least with Blake, the purple still fits with the naming theme given the belladonna flower. Thou as said I feel Yang's hair, gauntlets, prosthetic and trim cover the gold and Weiss forsaking white for more blues and reds to show her escaping her father is great :3 But yeah sorry if I came off as defensive there but given the deluge of self proclaimed critics who like to use his name to slander his friends whom he asked to write the show with, something in that general vicinity kinda set me off. Look look look. I don’t h a t e the browns but I do very much see your point lol. Yang is my fave, her party girl archetype that was revealed to just be the surface (like Weiss’s rich pompous attitude and Blake’s quiet shy one) of her was cool but was never all of her. She grew to be more in the story and her outfits had to reflect that with a more matured grounded look… but brown?? Yellow is very loud and to me the oranges make it feel more at home. But the purple in her eyes that call back Blake can be used to tone down the yellow as well like you said. And that color is completely neglected in terms of costume design elements for what?? Shes the most supportive teammate so it’d make sense to have all her teams colors along with her own. You’re inspiring me to try my hand at it too lol

6:10 I love this design, I had come up with a similar frilly top “Summer/Vacuo” style Yang a few months ago but scrapped it because I felt it wasn’t “Yang” enough, but seeing this design really convinced me otherwise!

Hey. I'm new here 😅 and just came across this video. I just wanted to say I really love your redesigns of Yang. It's beautiful, stylish, and it fixes the whole issue of Yang just having brown and orange. I wish the rwby designers made use of yellow, black and white with some red accents in for her designs (but they don't sadly..). My favourite one was the first one that you showed in this video. I liked the other designs to and the idea of putting armour on Yang so she can deliver devasting kicks to enemies in combat and also look stylish while doing it is a clever idea. I love it.

@@ToastyGhostie-np9bd I guess one of the reasons I was never bothered with the lack of yellow in her outfit is that her massive blonde hair more than makes up for it. Plus, I think the brown compliments the hair quite well. My favourite Yang design is without a doubt the volume 5 to 6 version.
However, I can not say the same for Blake, who I think dresses in way too much white for my liking, especially in later volumes. Her black hair doesn't pop the same way Yang's does, and thus, her being 'black' themed is not nearly as apparent. I personally would have given her more darker colours for her outfits.
Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I just find character design, and especially character redesign, really interesting, and I needed to rant a little.

@@Flufux no I actually completely agree that v4 onward Blake designs are exceedingly lacking. I especially dislike her V7 outfit because they went for a "cyber ninja" and I feel like that was very out of left field for the character? Also her hair in V7 onwards is like dark grey and I think it looks bad shape wise too :(

These are really good !! Here’s some constructive feedback : I think titling it ‘I redesigned Yang 7 times’ rather than ‘artist’ it would be better because I don’t really care about some artist but if you use first person then it draws me in to a persona connection immediately. Also, although the video wasn’t too long by any means , I think it would be even more watchable to a general audience if it was like half the length - like bang bang bang here’s the designs .

I think the reason they went with brown for one of her main colors is because she started out as a reference to Goldilocks and the Three bears! So the brown is the bear portion, plus I feel like so many of us associate black and yellow with bees it might have been a little confusing to some. Your designs are really cute though! I love how you style hair.
That's a really good point. Also she is a motorcyclist in the show so maybe it's also supposed to be leather for that... hobby lol

Yeah. I have some ideas for Jaune. Idk if it's considered sacrilege, but I want to give a Jaune a weapon of my own design and simplify his colour palette. His design has a LOT of colours fighting for attention imo
As for Ren and Nora I have less design ideas; suggestions are welcome!!!! Also what weather? Temperate, winter or summer
But Jaune will still have a sword :P I won't change him too drastically

you're telling me that yang is going to be fighting in HEELS and flowy flappy clothing like this ? i feel like some of these designs easily dont mesh with her actual personality, she's a tomboy, not chic. theres definitely 2 or 3 that are good, but the others I dont really understand.
I like volume 1-3 Yang, that might help explain it a bit...? But yeah, if you like tomboy Yang then by all means!

I think these are all great designs in and of themselves, and it's clear you put a lot of work into them and a lot of thought. My only problem is... not a single one of them actually felt like Yang. They all felt like someone else. I do not know if that was maybe just because your personal style is more delicate than the one they use for her in the show, or if you were trying to lean too heavily into making her glamourous and pretty rather than practical and sporty, but there feels like there is something missing that really sells her fiery attitude and that she can often be stubborn.
To me the pre-design to her winter wear outfit is actually the one that comes the closest to matching her silhouette and her vibe. The final jacket seems way to cumbersome for her fighting style, with way to much material to snag on things, and something she would likely ditch as soon as a battle actually started. Most of these outfits feel like something Wiess would buy for her, not pieces Yang would buy herself.
Sorry, I don't want to sound like I am bashing your efforts, but one of the most important things when making alternate outfits for a character, or redesigning them is to identify their personality traits and the key elements of their design that make them who they are or how they show who they are.
While here palette could be changed to be only yellows, whites and blacks, I never had a problem with there being browns in her design because they serve the same purpose as white, grey and black. They can act as neutrals in the design that other colors can then act as the focus around.
I appreciate the constructive criticism! The Yang I have in my mind could be different from the Yang you have in your mind?
Like I like V2 party girl Yang in her hunter outfit where she wears I suppose high fashion even though she's fighting the Paladin - however especially in V9 her character has certainly changed.
Now she wears chunky bomber jackets and stuff far less skin tight - is the only way I can think of saying that.
Saying that neutrally! Not like that's a terrible thing.
I really loved her portrayal in V2 and all my designs kinna branch of there. I mean I certainly wouldn't say there is no Yang in my designs - especially in #3 and #4 I feel like her more fun, sunny self is present.
But if you feel that way that's okay!

That was just observation I'd made about the character's personality/theme from watching the show, like, checklist of traits, but I also haven't watched some of the more recent seasons (need to get caught up), and I suppose it's very possible she's loosened up some and become more interested in things like fashion and glam.
Maybe Wiess has rubbed off on her? XD
I guess I will have to see the later seasons and then see if things match up from there.

Off note: I believe browns and other earthy colors were used in Yang’s design as, under an RGB system, those colors are composed of only reds and greens, with little to no blue. The same is true of yellow, which is maximum red and green without blue. The same is true of orange. This acts as a good compromise, allowing different colors while still being in the same-ish ballpark as yellow, and it makes her look a tad bit more realistic and mature than the other characters. Could be wrong/jumping at stuff I understand, but either way your designs are also good and well thought out from a color-design perspective.

I am glad you like my designs! My thought on the brown is that it makes perfect sense; Yang also has some leather-jacket, motorcycle, rebel thing going on from what I have seen in other comments too, which is why the brown is there.
My only thought is like, there has got be more aesthetic ways to incorporate the brown even so. Like the way the brown is designed to be patchy with multiple different browns just all looking like a mess on her torso, fighting for attention --- is not the only way to design her with brown. But that's just me 💖🙏😇
But you are by all means 100% allowed to love the brown, and all of Yang's looks, just a matter of opinion

Was excited to look into this, but kinda bummed when you started going into "Monty's vision" stuff, and I broadly disagree with the premise "Yellow hair, yellow clothes, yellow everything is good" as I find almost every single color dominated character to look awful.
The Precure one is a good example, she looks like a lemon drop not a stylish characters; meanwhile one of your other examples don't really work cos Mami's top is white and her skirt is a totally different shade to her hair.
& given several of my friends adore the more butch direction Yang's been taken in over the borderline fanservice outfit from V1, the "No feminine is a problem" part just kinda bums me out.
Oh I guess it seems we have opposite tastes! I like Yang to have her party girl with hints of masculinity!
I also do adore the magical girl aesthetic where 1 character is a colour and that's their whole "thing".
My only thought is that my Yangs all have like a pretty dominant neutrals like
#2, #4, #5, #6 black is very present
#1 has black and white
#3 and especially #7 have lots of white? Like that's where ya lose me? I agree Yang would look terrible in literally all yellow! That's why I put her in a LOT of white and black.
I do feel Monty was interested in making a show where each of his characters had a colour unique to them that they were named after, too. Not to say that being strict to Monty's aesthetic is the only way to design these characters, or trying to use his name to insult the current character designers! They are extremely talented artists and they design whatever they want, truly.
But yeah, I think we both have different opinions on Yangs character and what's beautiful - but that's okay 💖
We just have different ideas on what looks good.

I think we very much do have opposite tastes as I don't feel Yang never was a "Party girl beyond putting on a veneer of it for Juniors Bar (While ordering a drink she didn't drink with super low alcohol content) Or setting up the dance and claiming to be turning heads, but then not actually participating in it (Instead choosing to host & be a wallflower, in a very conservative dress as she seems to hate being ogled.)
I was talking less about the redesigns there and more the concept and examples provided, sorry for being unclear.
He did, but he also said that he wanted a show where characters revealed layers of themselves over time rather than just being how they were presented upon arrival. Plus, at least with Blake, the purple still fits with the naming theme given the belladonna flower. Thou as said I feel Yang's hair, gauntlets, prosthetic and trim cover the gold and Weiss forsaking white for more blues and reds to show her escaping her father is great :3
But yeah sorry if I came off as defensive there but given the deluge of self proclaimed critics who like to use his name to slander his friends whom he asked to write the show with, something in that general vicinity kinda set me off. Still sorry.

My one thought - not to argue needlessly - truly - is that Yang can have a facet of her be a "party girl" and still have complexity? Like she has many facets and her party persona is just one of them. But whatever, the show ditched that anyways and I'm glad the current Yang has her fans. 💖 Thanks for the watch!!!
