Finding out about Olivia’s passing this morning, I thought about this clip…and how KC and ONJ had been such good friends. It had been 39 years since these two last saw each other. And now, finally, I’m certain Karen was one of the first people to throw her arms around Olivia to welcome her home… I’m sure the two are sitting on a couch upstairs, with nearly four decades to catch up on. Yes! They were! There are still some locals living in Downey, CA where the Carpenter family had lived since Karen was around 13 yrs old who can tell these wonderful stories about when Olivia would drive east to Downey from LA, and they'd hang out wherever they wanted knowing that the ppl around them would leave them be. Olivia apparently came to Downey a lot w/Karen. There is a funny story the locals tell about the two of them being inside of a store that developed camera film. Well, Karen & Olivia had come in to pick up the latest roll of pictures when the song "Close To You" began to play over the intercom thingy - whatever it's called that plays music while ppl are shopping. Olivia & Karen hear it and start singing the song together right there in the store and really started hamming it up like comedians for the locals. How hilarious. Watching this video, I can only imagine how hilarious those two could be together. Karen was known for being as funny, silly, and making silly faces as Carol Burnett or Lucille Ball. She especially loved Lucy because she grew up on that show. So funny.
it clearly also gave olivia Newton John's boyfriend the idea to vanish off that island...it was like a cabal of conmen were operating at that time..kc got divorced after this
Love that Karen did not get interrupted by anyone while telling her story this time.She always had something funny to say during a story..Love hearing anything she had to share.Been there since day one and still can't get enough of her.Miss you Karen.

Yes, it was, sadly. If she could have lived, she might have move on, remarried, and, hopefully best the anorexia, but by this time her heart and body had been damaged.

He owned a construction/real estate company, she once loaned him $10,000, because he was often embezzling from his clients who paid him for jobs, then he would have to put the money back. She went to her lawyer right after this interview, and revised her will. She left all her money, personal effects etc to her family, and only left the houses they shared plus whatever was inside to him. He was on the path of making her go broke until she put her foot down. They often argued over his money issues and her eating habits. When she died, their divorce wasn't final, but because of that will, he only received what she had left for him.
She's skeletal - amazing that she "appears" so energetic - poor woman. Too think she used Ipecac around this time - such a shame - that stuff is so hard on the body - the heart especially.
I don't think she took Ipecac. I read she took thyroid pills to speed up her metabolisim. Anorexia is where you starve yourself and Bulimia is where you for yourself to throw up.
Her cause of death was emetine cardiotoxicity due to her anorexia...her liver still contained traces of ipepac. So sad that anorexia was not very known or treated back then...
Oh wow! To think that she would go to that extreme of purging herself like a bulimic, is very sad. She seemed so happy in her interviews and on stage. Shame she didn't want to get help.

Her husband had a vascectomy but didn't tell her until after the wedding was planned. Stories say Karen was pissed because she wanted kids. They separated after a year of marriage.
Plus, he only married Karen for her money. We was already living way beyond his means when he met her. I seriously doubt that he owned the boat that Karen was talking about. She paid for everything, houses, trips, cars, everything. He supposedly "bought" her a car as a wedding present, but he only leased it. When he stopped making payments on it, the collectors came and reposessed it. He called her a bag of bones that wasn't capable of having and raising kids. Sadly, and only in that aspect, was he correct. At her weight, I can't imagine Karen carrying a baby for 9 months, and then having the strength to care for it. Nevertheless, Tom was probably the worst man she could have chosen to marry. He was horrible to her.

this would have actually been filmed on Sept 1, 1981, (it may have aired in Nov) as Karen states "since I got married, a year ago yesterday", so she and Tom were not yet separated.
So sad to hear her talk about her husband as if they are happy, when the truth was obviously very different. She was already losing loads of weight since the wedding - he was making her miserable and aggravating her anorexia. I believe he hastened her death,

I've never heard that, but they were such good friends, I just can't see that being a factor with Karen. She had body dysmorphia, as well as an overall feeling that nothing about herself was good enough. It's too bad our society didn't know anything about that stuff back then. At least her death wasn't in vain, and it brought awareness, saving countless lives.
@@runandplay I do remember an interview with someone who recalled Karen saying how thin Livvy looked on her TV special, and that's how she wanted to look. I don't think it was jealousy, but her dysmorphia made her think there was something wrong with her own body. Olivia has always been slender, but not skeletal, like Karen is here.
No, it started when she was called "chubby" by a reporter( she wasn't), then as her life got more out of control she became determined to get thin and gain control over 1 aspect of her life- weight and food intake, as is typical of anorexics. Not much was known about the disease or how to treat it then.

It goes deepER than that. She never could get the love and approval from her mother that she so desperately needed and wanted. It was clear that Richard was his mother's pride and joy. Karen never could measure up in her mother's eyes.

I visited Catalina Island when I was in Los Angeles. It's an hour boat ride or so from Venice Beach. Now there are some really nice condos there behind a gated community and like Karen said some dumpy hotels. Such big stars and they didn't know anyone to stay with? I think Robert Wagner and Nathalie Wood had a place there. Wouldn't want to get a boat ride back with RObert though!!!!!!

Between her solo album getting shelved, then just few months later meeting gold-digger Tom, and marrying him anyway even though she had wanted to call the wedding off... ugh. It's no surprise really, that the eating disorder got so much worse. Bless her heart.

A bit has been said that Karen Carpenter was jealous of Olivia Newton John 's thin body, but though ONJ was slender, she was not skeletal.
I've never heard that, but they were such good friends, I just can't see that being a factor with Karen. She had body dysmorphia, as well as an overall feeling that nothing about herself was good enough. It's too bad our society didn't know anything about that stuff back then. At least her death wasn't in vain, and it brought awareness, saving countless lives.
@@runandplay I do remember an interview with someone who recalled Karen saying how thin Livvy looked on her TV special, and that's how she wanted to look. I don't think it was jealousy, but her dysmorphia made her think there was something wrong with her own body. Olivia has always been slender, but not skeletal, like Karen is here.
No, it started when she was called "chubby" by a reporter( she wasn't), then as her life got more out of control she became determined to get thin and gain control over 1 aspect of her life- weight and food intake, as is typical of anorexics. Not much was known about the disease or how to treat it then.
@@IBGECKO yes, Karen was naturally curvy and "had hips" as Richard said. It's just another thing adding to the tragedy that at this time Olivia got a lot of attention for her thin looks. Ironic that Olivia's daughter also ended up with anorexia.

Wow, although Olivia's always had a healthy thin figure for her body type, poor Karen looks almost skeletal here by her facial structure and her legs. Of course it's due to her eating disorder. Otherwise, I enjoyed this interview and how enthusiastic she was. It's nice to know they were such good friends.

It goes deepER than that. She never could get the love and approval from her mother that she so desperately needed and wanted. It was clear that Richard was his mother's pride and joy. Karen never could measure up in her mother's eyes.

I had no idea she and Olivia were such good friends,she was really sick here ,anorexia was still a fairly new disease,I had all of the Carpenters albums on vinyl,I still miss her ,as I watch this Olivia is yet again battling cancer ,her positive outlook is such an inspiration to me,I’m a retired nurse,five of my twenty year career were spent on an oncology unit ,so I know what an uphill battle she’s facing ,I loved watching this .

All these surgeries and little girls thinking looking like Kim K even before puberty is normal and natural... And people still lie about how to achieve the current popular look. I visited Catalina Island when I was in Los Angeles. It's an hour boat ride or so from Venice Beach. Now there are some really nice condos there behind a gated community and like Karen said some dumpy hotels. Such big stars and they didn't know anyone to stay with? I think Robert Wagner and Nathalie Wood had a place there. Wouldn't want to get a boat ride back with RObert though!!!!!!
