Steve Bell. Bingo. I have and have had quite a few guitars in my time and always considered a tele to be a limited guitar. I just never really played one. But I bought a 2003 American Standard, same colour as this guy is playing. Basically just to round out the main three of the holy trinity (strat tele and LP) My collection now along with the tele is a 95 Gibson Nighthawk, an Elite Strat, a 72 strat, and a 2019 LP Standard. My bro asked me...If your house was on fire and you could only grab one guitar, which would it be? It would be the tele! I cant believe what a great axe it is. I can play anything from country to ACDC on it. I love that thing! Who knew?
This has become one of my favorite UA-cam channels. No BS, no drama, nobody trying to sell you snake oil. Just great demos and lots of info relevant to guitar playing.
Yeah I liked it but a few years ago I compared the Classic 30 to a Carvin Belair 30 (look identical) and guess what sounded better by a country mile. Couldn't believe it. Carvins Kill and I wanted the classic before that day. I bought the Tweed Carvin Belair 50.
@@conartist267 most probably you should have tried some different speaker in c30. speaker is the gamechanger. the amp schematics could be pretty much the same.
Your channel has introduced me to the sound of so many amps I have never heard before especially brand's like Supro, Three Monkeys and Koch. The editing and playing are perfect. I hope you are making money from these videos!
This is one of the best demonstrations showcasing the differences between all of these amps. There are no looser or winners here as with everything being equal, it's all subjective. Also, if I may add, it's one of the reasons I have a small stable of ten different tube amplifiers in my collection. As well as cabinets, effects, drive pedals, and the list goes on and on. Same with guitars as well. One of each just won't do! Great video.
Likely getting theSupro Black Magick this Christmas. Your videos have led me to believe that I've made the right decision! Thank you, sir for providing us with such great content on your channel!
Great tones and equally great licks! Many amps sounded killer but to me the 3Monkeys is the winner with Strat and Tele...smooth, round, warm yet clear and articulate.
loved it right away - great idea. I personally own the AD30 and I can tell you that it sounds killer when cranked but insanely loud! Class A,, low gain but very responsive and SO direct and punchy!!
THIS - is a fabulous demo. extremely useful comparison - assuming that you tried to get the eq and drive similar in all the amps. great player too with an uber-classic feel. Bravo!
Partial to the Bugara and Supro in this demo. Theres so many variables in and an amp settings that even a basic comparison would take some 3-5 hours min and would require a looped guitar part for consistency. Don't mean to be snarky but it's refreshing to finally hear demos performed by someone w/ actual chops !
I'm glad I watch this again in 2023, apparently some amp does make the vintage telecaster pickup set sound so glassy! Even in highly cranked situation. I'm glad, it's not the Roswell pickup vintage set that I have then, I got the wrong cab/amp for my taste (warm/dark sound). Thanks Johan!
Can’t believe it, I liked the Peavey best, Dr Z 2nd. I have a nice Stratocaster , 2 Les Paul (57 special-2007 Standard ) Never found the right telecaster for me. Love this channel!!!
Great demo!. The Peavey sounded totally awesome. I own that amp and I know it can get a lot more raunchier when gain levels are turned up. The Supro sounded really cool, as well as the Fender. Love your vids.
That tele is very bright. Some amps handled better than others for sure. The Three Monkeys, the Marshall, the Supro and the Bassbreaker seemed to deal with it the best, in my opinion. The Supro was really noisy with lots of buzz. Of course, if one were allowed to change the EQ, one could probably compensate. Really the best situation would be to have them all at your disposal. Great video series. It's nice to hear all these amps together in one video.
+Lawrence Gillespie Thanks man! Yeah the 12 o clock EQ setting and cranked volumes are closer to the sweet spot on some of the Amos than others. Cheers
Marshall has amazing note clarity, Supro has a bit more mojo. Fender sounds good too. Would be interesting to hear the Custom version of the Marshall Astoria, to see if it keeps the clarity but gets closer to the Supro's chewy goodness. Great set of vids dude.
The Peavy, the first time through, was *instant* Rolling Stones. Beautiful crunchy tone! Also liked the Fender Bassbreaker. For something different, the Orange had so much crunch....I've never heard a Telecaster sound that thick without a fuzz pedal or other adulterant lol
THANK YOU for the great effort to produce these videos. Very, very helpful :-) My favorites are the Peavey Classic and the 3 Monkeys, the Vox AC15 is a real disappointment. The Supro BM was also quite a positive surprise for me. This amp has a great character (and works great in a band context) - not for me but for other players (styles) it might be the winner.

My buddy has the Cube and loves it, plays it more than his other amps and he has a Peavey Classic 30 and other valve combos. I have the Supro Black Magick so I'm biased lol. I also have a Katana and that's based on the same Tone Logic circuitry that's in the Cube, I like it a lot and there's a huge community for both Katana and Cube users. So you're definitely not a fool my friend, if anything you're ahead of the curve lol.
@@javiceres The Supro is a damn fine amp and it sounded good with all my guitars but it seemed to really like my LP. I ended up selling it and the Katana though and got a EVH 5153 50W that I run through a Marshall 4x12. I've been on a 80's kick and just today I ordered a Charvel DK24 Pro Mod, the Satin Burgundy Mist one with the white Duncans. As far as combo amps go I think my all time favorite is my Yamaha THR10X. I can take it from room to room easily or anywhere else, plus it's a great interface. You can record the dry signal along with the wet and afterwards I use AmpliTube 4 on the dry track and try a few dozen amps and settings on it. Such a fun little amp, I highly recommend it. Plus as soon as you get one you'll notice that damn near every guitar UA-camr owns one and you'll start seeing them all over the place in their videos lol.
What a great series of demos. The Marshall and 3 Monkeys really stood out, but the prices for those make them unrealistic. The Supro was amazing in all the demos as were the Bassbreaker, Peavey and surprisingly the Roland. The others had their moments but were not as consistent and the differences on the different guitars was eye opening. I hated the Brugera and Dr. Z but I could see where they would shine in the hands of Johnny Marr type player.
It was really interesting to see how all those amps suit particular guitars differently, regarding the circumstances and playing style. They all shined on some occasions, but if I had to chose only one, regarding all three videos, it would definitely be The Orangutan, it really amazed me. I think it really stands out as the best overall.
This is the decisive video. This is it. For all the guys prattering on endlessly about tone woods, cable shielding, and fret thickness, this vid shows where you should really be devoting your attention.
Really enjoyed: 1. 3 Monkey - Nice saturation, all around very musical, this chubby kid can run fast, hit hard and doesn't care what people think. You want him on your team. 2. Marshall(surprised!) - Nice punchy, great overtones, classic gentleman. Kind of amp that talks and tells you what to play, even when you don't realize it. Doesn't matter he's always right 3. Bassbreaker - Punchy, rounded, warm with just enough highs. Humble fellow, not fond of bragging, but works hard and always gets the job done right. Always reliable 4. Orange - Love that british low mids with a pleasant fiz and aggression. Skater kid, not afraid to break the law. Nothing can stop him Okay: 5. Supro - Cool chiminess, wish it sounded a little more open(New tubes? Mic Placement?) Tall, slick fellow who wears shades and drives his Thunderbird at 72mph. 6. Koch - Kinda cool fiz, doesn't not the deepest or sparkliest, but still 3 dimensional. Cheerful chap, self motivated, knows his place, but isn't afraid to speak his mind. 7. Engl - Not in love by its self, but it would sit in a mix very well(little nosey). The friend you call when everyone else is busy. Not bad company. 8. Peavey - Your chime and punch make me hungry for more of it(which you don't happen to be giving me). He's got great personality, he's just shy....give him time, you might really get to know him. Meh: 9. Roland - Muffed, unfocused, not completely awful. Initially feels good to be around. Tries to be warm and energetic, but doesn't communicate very clear. Not good with long term relationships 10. Dr. Z - Almost cool mids, but I feel like you are stuck in a box. Drives a 90s mid level convertible sports car. Think Uncle Rico. 11. Bugera - Feisty kid, loves to insult people to their faces. Very colorful vocabulary. Unfortunately he needs to do a few push ups or eat a cheese burger so he can put his money where his mouth is. 12. Vox - Has a rich and famous parent. He has a little bit of their charisma, seems motivated but its fake. It sucks living in their shadow. Some girls fall for him, others think he's the annoying rich kid. Disclaimer: Take no insult. My commentary is based off of this specific sound clip. It seems Johan is capturing a straight forward sound from these amps to give us a general idea of what these amps are. Not necessarily trying to get tweak crazy. Realistically: 12. Vox - Use the top boost channel. Cut the tone, boost the Treble. Mic slightly off the cone. This amp can sound wonderful. Switching to a Celestion Blue and swapping tubes can work wonders too. I've gigged this amp many times and got many lovely tones out of it. 11. Never used a Bugera, I think the axis of the mic can drastically improve the tone and get well into JCM800 world. Honestly, it is a very useable tone in a mix 10. I owned a Dr. Z. It sounded very boxy. I do think a little more highs or a different set of tubes may do the trick. 9. The Roland could be nice for layering guitars. A little more presence(crystal highs) or even a compressor might make it pop more. (I might swap tubes or speakers) 8. I like the spankiness of it. It's 85% there. Wether tubes, a Graphic EQ or Tubescreamer or a little more treble, I see potential for getting this nice and chewy. 7. Never really spent time with an Engl. I feel like this amp bridges a gap for a modern rock rhythm player, but with just enough vintage vibe. 6. Never used a Koch. I can imagine making a record with two rhythm guitars panned in stereo, Koch would be nice paired with a brighter cleaner amp. 5. Supros are sweet. This sounds great. I think they have an incredible ability to sound just a slight bit more open(it's my preference), there is nothing wrong with this tone. 4. Orange isn't the sound for every occasion, but man, I love that chugginess! 3. I may like the Supro and the Orange more than the Fender, but I can see the Fender having by far the most flexibility and being useful at basically any gig. 2. The Marshall has an incredible tonal spectrum, although I feel like the Bass could be turned up a bit more. Just musical. Just reminded why it's the King. 1. The 3 Monkey isn't really for every occasion, but it has it's own unique voice, personality and just speaks. It's the kind of amp that can totally dictate your playing style and make you play things you'd never think of.
Supro wins with all three guitars. I was pleasantly surprised by the Engl. The Marshall sounded just OK with the other guitars, but the Tele has enough bite to give it some presence. The Bassbreaker sounded amazing with the Paul, but dry with a Tele. Most of them sounded pretty good, but the Supro sounds bigger and more immediate.
The Supro is my absolute favorite. Great personality, great tonal character. The Blues Cube is a big surprise. Well done, Roland ! The Peavey still has a lot of Skynyrd vibe within. But what went wrong with the Dr.Z ?
1. Supro 2. 3Monkeys 3. Marshall 4.Dr. Z All things guitar related are purely subjective and my opinion might be different if I were there playing and adjusting the settings for my taste. I've watched all 3 videos and have a few thoughts. 1. 3Monkeys - It sounded the best in each vide, with all 3 guitars. 2. Supro - This was my favorite. 3. Dr. Z - Sounded better with the Fender guitars. 4. Marshall - That's just a super cool amp! See the comment section of the other videos for my top 4 rating for each video.
That supro is so well rounded across the three different guitar/pickup types. That bass-breaker and the orangutan also pretty sweet! out of interest how are they ranked in RRP?
Sounded great overall. The only thing I observed that may skew the results a little was your mic placement. For some of the amps it looked like you placed the mic directly in the center of the cone, and for others it was a little offset, and for some others it was quite a bit offset. The mic placement relative to the center of the cone records more bass or more treble depending. So, some amps may sound thinner if the mic is in the center and others more bottom end if way off to the side of the cone.
I noticed lots of people on this comment section has been well disappointed by the vox tone. Maybe a test set up where the controls are set to where the amps will sound their best, regardless of wattage. Just an idea? Thanks for another great video anyways!!!
all these videos were great. loved hearing all these different amps in a close comparison. i own a bugera, and will admit that in these videos it certainly did sound the worst. but why have the EQ on 5 , instead of trying to get it to sounds its best? also the new ones with the turbosound speakers dont sound quite as good as the older ones.
+matthew stewart Thanks, it's hard to do a comparison that covers all bases, in this one we used constant settings. But I am actually one of apparently few people that liked the Bugera, with the Les Paul it got that "Born to wild" tone. To me it's better that the amp sounds cool than good :-)
Awesome video as always, one of my favorites for sure! I love my tele!! And that one sounds great! What particular model is it? I'm guessing the body is ash? Ash and maple is the tone for me! I really liked most of the amps, vox is the winner for me but the Marshall and dr z were sweet too! For me an orange is best with a LP but they seem to have a darker tone than I would use either way, but still nice! Also cool to have another player and hear the differences in style, great video!! 🤘🏻👍🏻
In my amp arsenal I have a Marshall Astoria Classic and a VoxAC30hw2x,.. stil I like the Koch alot, but the Peavey Classic 30 is a killer! Peavey rules here ✌
wow... super impressed with the roland blues cube... sounded very full.... i wonder how different these would sound if they all had the same speaker...
FWIW, I liked the Peavey Classic 30, the Fender Bassbreaker and the Marshall ASTORIA Classic best for rhythm. Didn't like the ASTORIA as much for lead. The Supro and the Peavey sounded great for lead, the Bassbreaker and, actually, the Blues Cube. A bit curious about the mic placement on the 2x12s - they seem pretty different from one amp to the next? Very tasty playing, too.
Wow! Go 3 Monkeys! Johan, would you please start testing Bad Cats? In 2019 any batch test really is incomplete without one... love your wrk, my brother!
Hey Johan, I recently bought a Weber Mass 100 after you demo'd it (I love it). When I ordered it I just went flat out and got the balanced output option not really knowing what it was about, think you could give me a rundown of what exactly I can do with the balanced out on my attenuator.
+John Doe Hi, I guess it's the line out. Mine is marked out with "line out". Sometimes it can sound cool to blend the line out with the miked cab, but by itself it sound very harsh I think. Cheers Johan

2. Marshall(surprised!) - Nice punchy, great overtones, classic gentleman. Kind of amp that talks and tells you what to play, even when you don't realize it. Doesn't matter he's always right
3. Bassbreaker - Punchy, rounded, warm with just enough highs. Humble fellow, not fond of bragging, but works hard and always gets the job done right. Always reliable
4. Orange - Love that british low mids with a pleasant fiz and aggression. Skater kid, not afraid to break the law. Nothing can stop him
Okay:
Meh:
9. Roland - Muffed, unfocused, not completely awful. Initially feels good to be around. Tries to be warm and energetic, but doesn't communicate very clear. Not good with long term relationships
Disclaimer:
Take no insult. My commentary is based off of this specific sound clip. It seems Johan is capturing a straight forward sound from these amps to give us a general idea of what these amps are. Not necessarily trying to get tweak crazy.
Realistically:
Honestly, it is a very useable tone in a mix
10. I owned a Dr. Z. It sounded very boxy. I do think a little more highs or a different set of tubes may do the trick.
9. The Roland could be nice for layering guitars. A little more presence(crystal highs) or even a compressor might make it pop more. (I might swap tubes or speakers)
My man wrote a whole article 5 years ago and got 1 like
U got great ideas for wicked videos! Thanks!!
+Rodrigo Castro Thanks Rodrigo! Cheers Johan
Great demo! Great playing throughout. BUT 3 minute mark has some truly greasy killer playing!
i have a peavey classic 20 from the early 90s and its great for what it is when peavey was still usa
+Josh Feierman Thanks
The Supro is my absolute favorite. Great personality, great tonal character. The Blues Cube is a big surprise. Well done, Roland ! The Peavey still has a lot of Skynyrd vibe within. But what went wrong with the Dr.Z ?
Koch, Bassbreaker, Peavey, Orange, 3 Monkeys for me here.
Sounds like someone forgot to take the Doctor Z out of it's shipping box :P
Exactly....maybe they left a towel in the cab
Absolutely. That Dr. Z easily should have won. Definitely not dialed in right.
Love that orange tone!
1. Supro
2. 3Monkeys
3. Marshall
4.Dr. Z
All things guitar related are purely subjective and my opinion might be different if I were there playing and adjusting the settings for my taste.
+Kevin Bolick Thanks! Great feedback!
completely helpful and well done excellent
That Supro was nice. Nice comparison. Very Seamless.
+Alex Gambill Thanks Alex!
That supro slays!
+J SB Thanks!
I noticed lots of people on this comment section has been well disappointed by the vox tone. Maybe a test set up where the controls are set to where the amps will sound their best, regardless of wattage. Just an idea? Thanks for another great video anyways!!!
+Iam Andes Thanks, yeah that would more fair
Marshall, supro, fender BB...great demo!
+Francois Dominique Thanks man!
I like the Astoria. Nice clarity.
Wow the Blues Cube and the Peavey Classic 30 really showed out!
+Marlon Borreo yeah, great value amps
all these videos were great. loved hearing all these different amps in a close comparison. i own a bugera, and will admit that in these videos it certainly did sound the worst. but why have the EQ on 5 , instead of trying to get it to sounds its best? also the new ones with the turbosound speakers dont sound quite as good as the older ones.
+matthew stewart Thanks, it's hard to do a comparison that covers all bases, in this one we used constant settings. But I am actually one of apparently few people that liked the Bugera, with the Les Paul it got that "Born to wild" tone. To me it's better that the amp sounds cool than good :-)
I dig his versatility
+Harold Bailey Yeah he's great!
Videos like this make in-nerds like me go Yeah-yeah-yeah!!! Very good job! And I really like Simons playing:-)
+Mats Frånlund Thanks Mats! :-)
😆SUPRO all the way !!!!!😆
The Supro was super cool. Still, the Peavey Classic was best for rhythm and the Koch for leads imo. The Vox was quite bland tbh, surprisingly enough.
OMG le Supro !!!
Bass breaker all day for me!
Thanks Jason!
+mike s Thanks Mike! I don't remember the tele model, gonna have to ask Simon. Cheers
In my amp arsenal I have a Marshall Astoria Classic and a VoxAC30hw2x,.. stil I like the Koch alot, but the Peavey Classic 30 is a killer! Peavey rules here ✌
Thanks
The Bugera sounds amazing with the tele
DC Welker ....Agree with you
Rolling stones
wow... super impressed with the roland blues cube... sounded very full.... i wonder how different these would sound if they all had the same speaker...
best video of amp comparison 👍👍👍
Blues cube to my taste is amazing, second supro and 3 monkeys
FWIW, I liked the Peavey Classic 30, the Fender Bassbreaker and the Marshall ASTORIA Classic best for rhythm. Didn't like the ASTORIA as much for lead.
The Supro and the Peavey sounded great for lead, the Bassbreaker and, actually, the Blues Cube.
A bit curious about the mic placement on the 2x12s - they seem pretty different from one amp to the next?
Very tasty playing, too.
Thanks Mea, yeah mic placement is always a source of variation when compare different size combos
fantastic range of amps
I like the fender , Marshall , supro.
My top 4 in this video based on sounds: Three Monkeys, Marshall, Peavey, and Supro.
Koch and Supro all the way. But that Marshall really does sound Focus-esque in that lead section
+James Honey Thanks James
Absolutely. Loooove the playing style
Awesome channel !! Subbed
+Amazology Glad to hear it! Welcome to the channel! Johan
Wow that bassbreaker is no joke, I'm already looking on Craig'slist thanx
The MVP of all 3 comparison videos is the SUPRO.
