A friend sent this to me because I am just starting out, using music production software to start composing for the first time. I spent nearly a decade playing guitar for fun, but I never recorded anything of my own because I didn't have the motivation or focus. Fast forward, and I'm getting older, so I'd like to do some music now while I still am young enough to learn things. He's been a fantastic help, and this video has given me some direction and motivation. Thank you!
The quantity/quality idea is great. It reminds me of Stephen King saying write everything, then cut everything that isn't the story. It's hard to kill any of your ideas, but it must be done.
I am a week into producing but I have been playing guitar since childhood. I learned to play guitar by learning to play other peoples songs. It's been some what of my approach to learning producing. Just rewrite other peoples songs that I like. Make minor changes, add things, subtract things, replace everything and reverse it. Just try things to see what happens.

Do you feel like it's a necessary step to producing effectively? 3. Apart from the elite super-successful, how does one earn an income from music producing? I ask the above questions as a complete layperson. Currently I'm a construction worker with no musical theory knowledge, but I'm interested in making a change in life for a deep-seeded passion (music). Hey brother! glad to have you here. I was in construction for years. 1. I'm self-taught, and a lot of people think self-taught = randomly making music and watching some videos until you're really good.. I think it actually means you have to be interested in being a STUDENT of the game. I drag all my favorite songs into my ableton sessions and break them down. I have notebooks of song progressions and random things I wanted to emulate. A lot of people also think self-taught = free. I invested in myself whenever I could, whether it was investing my time in videos or reading blogs, or investing money in sample packs and courses. Having professionally made Songs / Samples / Videos in front of you is the quickest way to learn the difference between amAture sounding shit and pro-sounding shit IMO. 2. I often get comments saying "i have been producing for 5,6,7 years and I still don't understand anything" and I think the biggest cause for that is not caring enough to dedicate themselves to being a student because that's PLENTY of time. If anyone is seeking out and watching these videos they obviously want to get better.. but. hmm ill explain it like this, If everyone had a college professor teaching them for 5 6 7 years they would know a LOT.. I'm proof you don't need college to learn BUT that takes learning how to be your own professor. When no one is watching it can be hard to make yourself put in the work. That's it's own skill. Today's billboard charts are stacked full of people who never went to Berkely, even in the early 2000's that wasn't the case. Times have changed. Side note - I also sometimes get questions on videos that I literally answered in the video.. so it's like if you can't dedicate 5 minutes to learning without looking at your phone is this really for you? haha. We all need tough love in this industry. 3. It depends on the route you want to go and the genre of music you want to make. Some musicians make jingles for commercials on the side, and that shit PAYS lol. You can mix and master for up-and-coming musicians for a fee. You can build a small following and tour your country, Tons of artists get 50-100k views and make a killer living because they have a loyal fan base that buys their merch and comes to their shows. You can sell beats, sell lyrics, sell presets and if they are good enough people will buy them, I'm lucky to finally be in a position where people trust me with their money in that way. I'm a beginner who hates to work through theory but prioritizes to master it before I start producing the real stuff. Man I wish I had more time. Writing lyrics takes enough time already and I gave up my Boxing and fitness! Feels bad man. I think I'll just go for a few private lessons first.

Great melodies or chord progressions /rhythms are a lot of what makes a great song, it's also one of the hardest things to learn how to do at a professional level. I worked with a Berkley graduate to create our midi pack, so it's 20+ years of music theory, piano playing, and melody creating in one kit. Basically, stuff you'd never think of writing by yourself. ~ I ripped the following off a random website ~ "For new music producers, writing music from scratch can be challenging. The lack of experience, inspiration, and resources may prove to be more than enough of a roadblock to discourage newbies. However, with the help of MIDI packs, making music becomes a lot easier. This can also be useful for music producers who may lack an actual instrument in the meantime. MIDI packs can provide loops of any instrument they need or a combination of any."
I am a beginner and wanted to ask about the reverb bus tip. If you send 100% dry signal from the mixing track to the reverb bus, is it not the same as just having a direct reverb insert on the mixing track? For the reverb bus tip to have a different effect than being and insert i guess i should send just a bit of the dry signal to the bus right?
Putting a reverb on the track itself takes away from the dry signal, losing clarity. You’ll hear the volume go down. Typically you’ll do this for effects or background vocals or something Putting a reverb on a send track keeps 100% of the dry signal and adds reverb on top of it. Yes, make sure the reverb mix is on 100% if it’s on a send and then adjust the send knob to taste

I have 2 problems. I cant sing, I don’t know anyone that can, so i can’t really complete any songs. So I totally legally download acapellas and go from there. But the vocals always sound crappy and it ruins the whole mix
