Good morning Josh. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Will do!
Good morning JOSH!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Wow you are putting lots hard work on the farm . One day you will be able to set back on the porch and look back on all those days. In joy the wonderful days . Nice
Sit back and relax rather than filling up and driving a water trailer around. It is a lot of work. Hopefully it worth it.
Thanks!
thank you so much!
H2 Oh what a project..I’d be TIREd from all this work…nice job Josh. WOOOOOO
Love the drain idea. I can see where that could be scaled down or up for different ideas. Bowling bowl is simple yet genius. The nut driver stuck in the top with the clamps is a cool tip. I do believe im gonna steal that one from ya lol.
we used to crawl around in a huge tractor tire on recess in elementary school in Minnesota. it was fun.
Congrats SRF on getting the pipes and value in the ground. water for cows soon.
Hi..... Josh, thank you for showing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🏡🎥👍👍👍
Really cool setup Josh! Ingenious idea with the bowling ball! Wooooo!
Thank you! Cheers!
Always a pleasure to see your videos, entertaining and some new and different ways of doing things.
JOSH SRF, I used to raise hogs, and they loved to play with an old bowling ball and rootaround with it. Happier animals make for much happier Farmer's Life.
Love the tire setup josh also id put something over the valve just incase the cows or calf nock off the bowling ball plus if a calfs in there the cover would protect that valve from getting g kicked or smashed.
Morning Josh your grass is looking great
Awesome job. We are starting on our second tire tank soon. We got a lot of hate on our video from people saying the rubber would poison the cows, it was ridiculous. Great video!
Hmm, rubber is inert & is not toxic.
@@kdegraa yeah but, tires are onky partially rubber. I would not drink water stored in a tire unless there was no other option. Not ideal. That being said, I don't think cows live long enough to get cancer. As long as the water is flowing and not just sitting there it shoudn't be a problem.
They have a point but probably not a real concern. It would be interesting to do a lab test on the meat or milk to see how much toxin accumulated and if it was of any real concern for human consumption but I doubt it. I wouldn't want to drink tire water directly if there were other options. Having the cows drink it and then eating the cows would dilute any toxins.
Good Morning Josh , Great job really a great Mechanic , well thought out and presented. Keep up thee great work.
Good Job Josh, your irrigation system is going together well. Keep up the good work! 👍
Love the idea of the clean-out being far from the tire/tank.
Wow Josh 😲 I LOVE everything you're doing on your farm. I wish I was half my age bud. You're somebody's dream come true for sure. I just think you're an amazing person and deserve someone just like you by your side...thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to video all your improvements and innovations along your journey to make your dreams come true for you.
You need a place like this and your Pops must be SO PROUD of all your accomplishments Josh❣️❣️❣️ you continue to amaze me and I'm sure thousands of us all over the world 😃👍warm hugs to you ❣️❣️❣️
I second this! If I were just six years younger, I’d volunteer. Now that I’m starting to slow down, I feel as though I’ll be totally worthless in a couple of years.
Brilliant video Josh
Great ideas but i recon the integrity of the seal between the tyre and the small amount of concrete in the bottom will fail due to cattle pushing against the flexible tyre and eventually you will get water seeping out from the bottom and causing a problem with poaching. i know a farmer who did this once, it did work but he filled the bottom up about 6" above the rim of the tyre in the bottom which had the effect of encapsulating and sealing the whole bottom. Hope it works for you Josh.
@ DAVID....EXCELLENT SUGGESTION / IDEA!!
i was wondering the same thing... i wonder if when he was doing the concrete if adding j bolts/ pins to the edges would hold the tire in place ever better. I love this thinking and cant wait to see how well this tire idea works.
No because it’s hydraulic cement
THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. G.B.Y. GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS.
Hey Josh thank you for the video and the information too woo
Good morning Josh! I'm liking your water set up!
This is pretty cool. I seen the tire tanks before but I never saw anybody cut the top out. The cows just had to lean in to get the water, this looks much better. Plus now it’s big enough so if you’re out there covered in dirt and sweat you got a quick little Jacuzzi to jump in. ;)
lol...and you won't...it's a total pain in the butt!! I could have done an entire video on this....we tried every blade on the farm...3 different saws and settled on the TORO chainsaw! It worked great...the rest failed miserably
Good morning keep up the great work you do an awesome job using your head
Good morning from ohio enjoy watching and learning something new
Josh you have some beautiful German Shepherds
Awesome idea I've got to try this setup
Nice work buddy.......some of your best to date... :)
Checking in Josh, been at work in Utah again so it's been hard to keep up brotha. Coming along nicely my guy!!
Looks great. I think bowling ball could break valve though.
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now. It’s an awesome idea
Tire water tanks are awesome, first time I heard of them was on Cross Timber’s Bison (Dusty Baker). They don’t cause Cancer, I agree! Love your content and enjoy watching. I have been binge watching 👍😊
The chian saw is the best way to cut a tire
it was...we tried all sorts of blades in the sawzall....nothing worked as good as that chainsaw
Absolute genius, this is so very cool.
The safety ball is a great idea. I’ve never heard of goldfish lasting that long outside, but it’s an interesting test
@@cathiwim really? I had no idea they were that hardy
It will also help with your cows getting worms from the water. The goldfish will eat the worm eggs and the bugs and their eggs as well.
Hey don't forget to use leave your dirt mounted over your trenches that ruin that settles it won't be an invert you want to up over the top someone a settles will be level with the ground cuz we all know the ground is going to get wet your girls can compact so make sure you leave your dirt mounted up over here trench line
that's great idea 50 years ago back when farmer started using tractor tires for water tank we did have a name for it
Those are very lucky dogs. They can run till they get tired and not leave their land
Nice work o n the tire waterer Josh. As a 1st generation rancher building my place from scratch, I have tire tank envy. Lol. Great progress my friend. Scott in Alberta 🇨🇦
Bowling ball as farm equipment? Love it!
That a Good educational video thanks farming is a great way of life sole food 😀
You need to put a screen inside the drain so you don't lose the goldfish when you drain the tank!
That's an awesome idea! I'm envious that you can just use a trencher to run water lines! We have to keep our water lines at least 8 feet down due to the frost. 🥶. Thanksnfor making these videos!
shew....that sucks! I don't think I'd wanna farm in cold country like that
Gotta tell ya that is one smart looking dog you got! No I haven’t seen the rest of the video yet just watching that dog run alongside your truck what a critter beautiful dog❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸
yeppers....dogs that aren't smart don't last on a farm that's for sure...lots of work and training on those critters
i use that valve for filling my buffer tank in pressure washing. love it, much better flow than others iv used.
Well kinda works like a toilet float but it’s a very good idea.
WoooooooooooHeeeeeeeHeeeeeeeeeee!!!Alright!!!🤗🤗🤗
Love the set up but will take awhile. God bless.
👏👏👏👏👏👏impressive
That is a pretty cool setup. I like it.
Great idea with the bowling ball.
Hi Josh what a great video and the use of a tyre as a water tank. I'll be trying some of your ideas, but what about the goldfish if the tank drains???
haha yea theres always an expert out there lol. I really digging everything you've done very ingenuitive, alot of out of the box ideas. there's more than 1 way to skin a cat.
hot damn josh... this is awesome!
Good video
I keep goldfish in my stock tanks. Best part about the goldfish is that they will eat skeeters and their larva.
They can live for years in a water tank through winter and summer. The only real problem will be if the water gets too hot, then you could get a bunch of floaters ☠️.
You have cteated what is called here in our trade (plumbing).... curb stop and riser for a street key.... common on all homes with a water service in the mid west....
that's smart Josh!, "Save the food!" Scrape Scrape,..... $ Sha- shing! that's my latest thing... lol
Ball valves and out door plumbing is trouble because there is always water inside of the closed valve
yep...but if the valve is below the freeze line then it's not a concern my friend
If the bowling ball doesn’t seal with just the weight i bet you could RTV it on and it would seal and still be able to be kicked off. Great idea by the way.
nice vid
Nice job as usual. However the NIH says as others commented below - Are tires toxic? The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. They do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the water and the environment. Sep 2, 2021.
look hard enough and you'll find something on the internet that tells you everything is toxic buddy....what's more toxic....a tire water tank with 55 degree water in it or hot water ran through your plastic bpa plastic in your house? Everything is toxic if you consume enough of it...even ice cream!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Good point Stoney. Just do not want to add to it. Thanks
Good job! Only comment I would make is maybe put the ball so that it is well covered by the water so they don't play with it. But otherwise, good set up.
our on off valves have white painted posts next to them, in our experience, its farm machinery that causes the most damage, over all its a nice setup.
Bowling ball sounds like a damn good idea.
Shiners, white clouds, CPDs, Mosquito Fish, Flag Fish are all a little better that goldfish in this operation.
We been using these tanks for along time thire was a time it was a government program to put those in o did learn to use a wood blade on a Sawzall cutting that lip and used dish soap for cooling the blade
Ppl do like to offer there opinion over what your doing but if you never impress them you can't ever let them down hehe
Creative solutions
The ball valve is a great idea but you might want to consider a curb stop instead because a curb stop is designed to be buried below grade AND take multiple on/off cycles whereas a ball valve can fail if used often or especially if there is sand.
A curb stop is also specifically designed to be turned with a special fork tool.
Another point... You might want to consider using a filter just to keep sand out of your ball valve and any other downstream emitters.
I enjoy your work!
I agree totally.....sourcing curb stop valves has been my trouble...and cost...$200 for a 1 1/4 curbstop! Crazy huh!
Nicely done. Any concern about the ball falling and breaking the valve? That’s the only thing I thought of but everything else looks great. 👍🏻
if the ball falls..in the water...it will not have enough force to harm the valve
Grand
Do bowling balls float? I never had to ponder that until I watched this video.
some do...some don't....ask me if this one did lol
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I am guessing no based on your design considerations.
I think the bowling ball will be fine until it's knocked off on the valve;)
Josh how is the water getting out of the tire tank when the bowling ball get knocked off of the standpipe with a cap on the outlet. Good video as always.
obviously the setup isn't quite perfect yet...gotta drill a small hole in the outlet cap....we shall see if this works!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer hole have to be bigger than water supply
I guess you have frost lines but man that looks like it's going to be real far down to get to
watch to the end...you'll see me use my tool to turn the valve on and off...obviously I won't be reaching my whole upper body down in the hole to turn the tank on and off brotha
Somebody's been thinking, nice.
Hadn't heard of the goldfish idea before. Curious to see if the make for a good sign.
Great idea with the bowling ball but I was wondering if the cows knock the ball off it looks possible for the ball to hit the water valve.
Well to what you said about the comments man its well thought out and looks like you did a great job putting it together
Much love from Tulia Texas out on the farm 🚜
Don't you dare use those cows for bowling pins :-)
Hey Josh! Great video! I dig the camera 1st person perspective when you build stuff. Fools my brain to thinking I actually did something today🤣
..And hey, please do a search for "15 best pond fish", as I think there may be better fish than goldfish for your situation. Cheers buddy!
problem is that "pondfish" might not survive where goldfish will thrive...we can catch some out of the pond and try it though!
Do a review on the Toyota truck
lol
Bowling ball cannon?
a company in ashern manitoba has being building these for years
Josh
Great thought has gone into your system so it's a bit complex, for a simple system, ha where are those Roman aquifer's designers when you need them, Just. Kidding. I do hope it all pans out well. But looking and thinking back on your past vids 🤔 a whole bunch of thinking and progressive design and pencil sharpening has gone into this, can't wait to see your koi goldfish a swimming it those black tires. Here fishy fishy fishy. So go fish my brother , Question what do fish have in common with a bowling ball, 🎳?
Dam son how big are your hands. Good idea with that little bowling ball, my money is on they will knock it off pretty quick.
👍❤
If the ball does get knocked off does the 💦 water keep running. ? I know that's a Big No No on our Farm,,,,,
Maybe you can attach a string from the ball to a valve handle so when the ball falls the string or chain well pull down the handle to shut the water off,,,,,,,
system has yet to be perfected my brotha....but I'm working on it and experimenting
You are going to leave the plug out of the drain line I hope.
yep...don't have the system perfect just yet...but I'll get there...this is just the first prototype buddy
Cross Timber Bison a,ready did something similar for their Bison pastures they not drain their system but did have come with way to keep them out of the water trough lol lol as bison try actually get in it they put fish in the troughs to keep algae down control and some even survive the winter freezing temps
Bowling ball was brilliant. I am curious why you did not use water curb stop valves. Not a criticism.... They are solid brass and are designed to live underground for long periods of time, and have a designated tool to open and close them. I can see as those hand holes fill up with silt that your handle on the gate valve could corrode. Either way Josh your innovation is awesome! Thank you for sharing.
1 1/4 curb stop valve .....$90....ball valve $24
What's your plans to keep mosquitos from multiplying.
fish in each tank
We have 5 tire tanks on the ranch, all with goldfish. I looked in your other videos but I did not see the follow up video, just the short video. What floating solar fish bubbler did you use? Do the cows mess with it?
solar bubbler lasted about 2 weeks before I tossed it in the trash....watch some more of the livestreams...in particular yesterday on ua-cam.com/users/stoneyridgefarmerlivestreams we show the fish in that vid
Within minutes the cows will knock the bowling ball off. It will be a sloppy mess around the tire and the screen will be ripped to shreds. I would of used a spring epoxy to a borehole in the bowling ball that would spring back in places.
yep....you're probably right....and then both of our glasses will be half empty together ...if we don't try new innovative ways of doing things...we never learn what works and what doesn't.....easy enough to sit on the couch and not do anything...that's the best way to ensure I never fail right .....time will tell buddy....it's all good
Guy out in Alberta has been doing this for years.
The bowling ball is a slick trick for a drain stopper. It looked like you had water flowing down the drainpipe ditch, is there a leak at the tank?
The only concern I would have with that system is that tires have dozens of toxic chemicals in them, and the toxins will leach out into the water. The toxins could show up in the animal meat.
why would a tire have any toxins different from a Rubbermaid water tank? If tires were loaded with toxins...we'd be constantly exposed to them driving...we'll test the toxin theory at some point...maybe send off a water sample for a test....great idea!
I had looked into this because I can’t even be outside a new tire store without the vapor making my eyes, nose, lips, & lungs burn ( same with gasoline & diesel fuel ), but then I have hypersensitive receptors that seem to be getting more sensitive with age.
Anyways, my findings...
Q: Is it safe to grow vegetables in old tires?
A: “Short-term, yes, tire planters are OK, although the soil in black tire planters will probably get hotter than most plants would prefer. Long-term, no, because the tire rubber will slowly biodegrade and release zinc, carcinogenic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other toxic compounds into your garden soil.
Q: Are tires toxic?
A: The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. And they do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the environment.
Also, Rubbermaid makes plastic food containers, & plastic uses less harmful compounds.
...but the life of beef cattle is rather short nowadays. So, less exposure.
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer We are constantly exposed when driving. They're not as bad as lots of other stuff but not as safe as food grade plastic. Awareness of particulate emissions from tires is just coming to light. That being said I woudn't really worry about it much for this application.
