Squeegee kid: 'If they were teaching me something, I'd be in school'

- It’s a sunny day at the corner of Mt. Royal and North Avenues as traffic zips off Interstate 83 and drivers, sometimes, blow the red lights to get to wherever they are going. As drivers idle in the turn lane, a group of squeegee kids gear up to weave between cars to make a little money.
The kids are equipped with a bottle of cleaner and a squeegee. They are at the corner now, while just days earlier, a driver was shot and killed by a squeegee kid after the driver got out of his car and came to confront the group with a baseball bat at a different corner in the heart of the city.
The incident hasn't deterred one squeegee kid, who didn’t want to show his face or give his full name, only telling FOX45 News he wanted to be identified as Jay. Jay said he’s been squeegeeing since 2019 and the only concern he has isn’t about getting hit by a driver.
“We worry about getting shot out here,” Jay said. “You gotta give respect to earn respect."

The Maryland Graduation requirement is a 9th grade education. He is correct! They took out all of the hands on training classes when they closed all the manufacturing plants around. The school system was created to produce factory workers and the factories are GONE!

It doesn’t matter that you’re not learning something YOU think is useful. You can’t go to community college or a trade program or even find a decent job without a high school diploma; so you show up every day (or 95% of days), do your homework whether you find it interesting or not, and work to get yourself out of that situation.

I lived within walking distance to that intersection. I graduated from high school. Attended college (Penn State and Maryland) and now live in Southern California away from all the madness in Baltimore. He's blaming his own failure on the school system. Wrong answer kid. Blame your parents.

These kids don't have the same opportunities that we used to have. My sister graduated in 1979 and had a fabulous education, wonderful programs, and the opportunity to become a great employee. I was in the same school in 1987 - the fabulous education was dwindling, the wonderful programs were gone, and the opportunities were few. My friend got one of those opportunities and has spent his life working for the O's. My parents were in Johns Hopkins, I spent a lot of time there and NO ONE at school cared, I buried my mother in 11th grade and no one CARED. I was running a house a t home and then going to school being treated like a child, so after four months I dropped out....... Is that my parent's fault???? I went and took the 9th grade level graduation test in 1995, no one has CARED that I even have a GED. My first job - I VOLUNTEERED at Baltimore City Civil Service to gain job experience..... you know what that gets me today???? Disrespect! Because, I have a lifetime of JOB EXPERIENCE, but no piece of paper to say that I know what I am doing. My sister is a Doctor and has her own business. Guess it is my parent's fault for waiting 9 years to have me.
The schools failed these kids from k - 12. Funding is siphoned by Charter and Now private schools that won't take these kids. If they won't attend regular school send them to vocational schools.
It all starts at home. This is the result of piss poor parenting in a shitty environment. What about raising your kids in a structured home with love and discipline? Do better as parents or don’t have kids at all!

FYI - the Maryland High School requirement for graduation in a 9th grade education AND they removed the three years of hands on technical skills training that they use to provide. That is called "Trade School" and "College Credits" now. It's about MONEY!!

There's a greater problem in our society that the police, politicians, or schools are unable to handle and the problem is that parents have stopped raising their children. Unwed young women are giving birth to multiple children who end up on city streets where they become a burden on society. Whenever a young male gets into trouble with the police, his mom goes down to the station alone because there's no father in the home. A mother cannot raise a child alone in a city like Baltimore where the streets are beckoning. Personal responsibility must be the order of the day if we are to slow the spiral downward towards decay. If a teen is out at 2 am on a school night, the parent is at fault. If a teen has a firearm, that's the parent's fault. Government officials cannot enter your homes and raise your children.
And if a kid is picking on another kid to feel like he need a weapon to defend themselves its also the parents fault ya got boy out here doing shit and instilling fear into others n the parents think they so good

That doesn't fix the issue. I'm not with sending all of Baltimore city high schoolers to the military. They need a fair chance at real employment and professional fields like dentistry, accounting, etc. Baltimore has a graduation rate of like 40%.it's ridiculous.

They say the schools are not teaching anything. How can they learn if they don't do the work? You have to put in the work in order to learn what is being taught. The internet is available to make the subject matter easy to understand.
The curriculum is the same in Baltimore as it is almost anywhere else. 9th grade probably offered algebra, world cultures or civics, English literature, earth science, and a language. This kid just didn't find it interesting or wasn't motivated to learn so he dropped his ass out. it helps to have a HS diploma to get ahead---it's really just a start. But it isn't that they weren't teaching him anything.

It’s always someone else’s fault. That’s the mentality of Baltimore specifically, and the entire country generally. Drop outs and criminals always blame the system or something else for their failures, when it’s up to them to decide to earn money the right way by getting their free public education & diploma and hopefully moving on to college, and getting a decent paying job, or to want that fast money, reached by nefarious means and no work on their part. It’s all about integrity, and I don’t have to say who has it and who doesn’t because it’s all in what a person chooses to do with their time.

Larger inner city school districts should invest in head-strart, truency offices, and alternative and trade schools...Many of these kids get to high school and cannot read and write on the 5th grade level...This is why many of these larger inner city school districts are always in jeopardy of losing accreditation because these kids cannot pass state education assessment proficiency tests...This is a failure of our state and city leadership by not properly investing in these troubled inner-city school districts...The school to prison pipeline is REAL...

The squeegee trade is all about intimidation. Pay or you and your car could get damaged. There is no excuse for the kind of English I hear these kids speaking. Apparently the parents gave them the confidence that dropping out of school is a good idea. The fact that the city does not stop this is unacceptable. Their chances of getting a job speaking as they do are slim.
The kids are hustling because they don’t have parents who care enough to work for them. Where are the parents? Why are they not being help responsible? I don’t see any interviews with them.

The system blames everyone except for the responsible parties. I think the politicians are afraid to discuss the real root causes of the problems, because they know who really is responsible, but it is hard for people of color to hold people of color responsible. We always try to find someone else to blame.
They are not addressing the issue of Where did the 15 year old get a gun? Why was he carrying a gun? Were the parents involved in any way such as Did the kid get the gun from one of his parents? Anyway, don’t blame the people in their cars.

He's right. As a parent who had children in BCS, they weren't teaching the children anything nor catching on to the kids with a learning disability. The BCS head Start teachers do more work with and for 3 & 4 yr olds them the Primary, Middle or High schools. Now I will say also that the parents play a big part in this as well. Not attending school functions, communicating with staff, not knowing the signs of a learning disability or properly disciplining their children and encouraging them to do right. The parents, school board and state has to do better with these kids
