Actually the videos weren't used BECAUSE they took up so much space. FMV only became common when disks were introduced and brought a whole lot more storage with them. If you look at Sonic CD in 1993, you can see they had a video that couldn't have even been made on a 2D gaming console, but it's highly compressed because of the mega drive not having much memory to play the video. While I see the merit in what your saying, from an advertising standpoint, Videos look a lot more impressive.
