A# and Bb is the same note. The musical term is "enharmonic". Which note you use depends on the key signature of the piece (if it's in F, you're more likely to see it as Bb; if it's in F#, it's more likely to be A#, and so on)

@@R37r0G4m3r If you're playing in a flat key signature scale (ex. D minor , F major...) you're playing the flats and the other way around for sharp key signature scales. What you know though, is true and she got it right too but it's for playing chromaticisms.
Strictly speaking they are different notes. Even-tempering on the piano means that they sound the same and are notated the same for piano, but a violin player can play them (slightly) differently depending on the key. @@JekoJekov you'd rather play a C# rather than a Db in D minor so it's a bit more complicated
The thing no one has mentioned yet for this to make sense is that every key signature must be comprised of each lettered note. So the key of D is written as D E F# G A B C#, because if we wrote it as flats it would be D E Gb G A B Db and now we have two Gs, two Ds, and no F or C written.
As another example If we took a flat key like Eb, it's properly written as Eb F G Ab Bb C D because if we wrote it as sharps it would be D#, F, G, G#, A#, C, D and now we have two Ds, two Gs, and we're missing E and B.
As someone who has never been properly educated in music theory, this seems like a really obvious thing that no one points out. The question isn't "Are C#/Db the same thing"? it's why does it matter which way it's written and THATS why. It makes it much easier for musicians to be like "Which notes are sharp in D? Oh yeah, it's F and C."
Pro tip:
1.check the fingering/notes of the song you want to play
2.if theres a hole that you need to half cover during the whole song and dont need the full hole note you can use tape to permanently half cover it and just play normally.
I got the chance to meet a professional whistle player and he had many whistles in the same key but with tape on different holes, he used different whistles depending on the song even if it was on the same key so he could play them fast without worrying about half covering

My friends and I all agree that the greatest example/piece of music ever created on the tin whistle has to be the ending solo in Supertramp's song "Sister Moonshine". Listen to the masterpiece of playing John A. Helliwell created for that song starting at approximately 3:49. Only a select few people in the world could come close to duplicating the precision, feel and delivery of that piece. Apparently, it took him many, many attempts to get the final performance absolutely perfect in 1975. He finally captured the finished product in studio which was the ideal finish to one of the great rock songs in history.

Really useful, thank you! and nicely explained! I had already discovered by myself the natural C (which we latins call "Do"), but i was NOT at all sure that it were at exact pitch.
By the way, i use whistles made of thick, dense plastic, whose shape is NOT tapered; and they have wide holes, easy to half·cover (i streighten fingers to do that).

The finger lift technique is very useful, thank you! Going to compare with a fingertip (rather than finger finger pad) method I've been using and see which is faster

A sharp and B flat is the same note, its just the way you play it. A sharp is going up and B flat is going down. There are no flats or sharps between B and C and E and F. For example A, A# B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A. There is a C#, D# but like i have said no # For E and F. B flat is the opposite way. Bb, A, Ab , G, Gb, F, E, Eb, D, Db, C, B, Bb. Also there is not sharps or flats in a C major scale. Great lesson i apologise if you know this already.

Its goes as far back as building the octave by Pythagoras. A# is enharmonic with bflat. Philosophically, b flat is a smidge(technical term😉) higher in pitch than a# . None of this is required to enjoy playing music of course, have fun!
yep absolutely! it has a lot to do with conventions of naming notes - for example, in a major scale we have 7 notes that follow a very specific pattern of half-steps and whole-steps (which is why on the piano you have different fingerings and patterns for different scales). so if we have those 7 notes, and start on F, we get F G A (B) C D E - but the required pattern says we have to play the note a half-step above A (the black key to the right of the white key called A on the piano). We don't want to label two notes of the scale with the same name (so, not F G A (A#) C D E), and we can't just call it "B" (because it is a half-step lower than B) so it gets named Bb. But short story, ScottofOakland has it right, they really are for all intents and purposes enharmonic (same note) and the different names are used to help us avoid lots of accidentals or weird key signatures.
@@ScottofOakland Correction: Bb can be slightly lower than A#, not the other way around. Sharp notes want to resolve up, so they must not be lower than halfway, and vice versa.

Hello, everyone. Guitar and piano player here. Just starting to learn about tin whistle, haven't played one yet. I understand this is a diatonic instrument but if you can half-hole to get the A#/Bb, could you in theory half-hole at every hole and therefore play the chromatic scale? Thanks!

I just saw your short video on the Arabic scale whistle. It looked like a carbon fiber whistle. Is anyone making whistles in alternative tunings? Maybe even somewhat affordable ones?
Jerry Freeman makes a Klezmer whistle that's alternative tuning...
Erik the flute maker is the only other whistle maker I know doing this sort of thing, but there are likely others.

As a beginner in playing the tin whistle but already a musical background ( former bass player ) I find a little bit frustrating that this instrument which I love, is only diatonic with some extensions but not fully chromatic...After some research I found few chromatic tin whistle but hardly any reviews of this Bracker www.music.bracker.uk/Whistles/C-Recorder-Whistle.html...Any thought or idea about chromatic instruments..? Your instinct is right to be confused by A# versus Bb on a traditional instrument. They are the same note in our modern equal temperament tuning system (e.g. when playing a piano). But they are NOT the same in just intonation. There a sharp is slightly lower in pitch than a flat (so cover ever so slightly more of the hole for a sharp). See e.g. How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care) by Ross Duffin. The same fingering chart for just intonation on a violin alone will make your head spin.
So am I right in thinking there is an A hole?
Do the phrases "half holing" and "cross fingering" refer to the same thing?
Half holing means to cover half the hole in order to hit additional notes.
Cross fingering means to cover and uncover full holes in unusual combinations to better achieve certain notes, or additional notes in the higher octaves.
D# is proving impossible to produce on mine

Yes :) You're basically aiming to open a small section of the hole, but the techniques used are pretty much the same. You'll find you're using a different part of the finger, but essentially doing a very similar thing :) @@johncadena4684

yup
A# and Bb are enharmonic only in equally-tempered tuning systems. All intervals in equal temperment are slightly flat except the octave to force A# and Bb to be the same frequency.
If you accompany irish fiddlers on guitar, you avoid the third for this reason, some fiddlers play “sweet thirds”, In that case A# and Bb would be out of tune with each other.
Half hole, it's difficult.
