A little background: this is EarthBound's last line of defense against pirates who've bypassed all of the game's other traps (like a significant enemy spawn increase in the overworld/enemies appearing in places they shouldn't). Believe it or not, the only fake thing about this video is the error noise I added to the real warning at the beginning of the video. I didn't actually mess with any of the Giygas glitching, those were all legitimate effects from EarthBound's ROM. All I did was splice/shorten the clips! If you want to play around with the crash, the Game Genie code is 2DE2-546E. I recommend making a save state right after Pokey turns off the Devil's Machine--the type of freeze after his speech will be random. Most of the time, it will just cut to black but sometimes you will get weird and creepy effects like this. If you're lucky, it won't freeze right away (kicking you to the title screen) so you can mess around with the naming screen like 3:56! Once you reset the game, your save files will be wiped, so be careful 😅 Also: I haven't tried it yet, but if you'd like to play through the game with tons of enemies without triggering the copy protection, use the Game Genie code 6D4F-7704 (provided by Nitrodon)!

Actually was completely unaware that Earthbound even had piracy protection. Pretty creative that they chose to do it like this instead of just blocking the player out of the game completely.
Definitely! You do have to reprogram the game to bypass the first check (shown at the beginning of the video) if you want to actually play a bootlegged copy, so they did try and lock pirates out at the beginning but they didn’t stop there 😅 there’s a couple more layers of protection, like traps laid out with this Giygas save wipe as a devious last laugh. I do want to try a playthrough with the ridiculously ramped up enemy spawn rate at some point!
@@goofylittleman.34 I recommend giving this EB Central article a read: media.earthboundcentral.com/2011/05/earthbounds-copy-protection/index.html There are several layers of protection that occur before the game is made incredibly difficult--the first is a region check (to make sure you're not running on a European/PAL system). The second layer is a check to verify that the memory does not exceed 8KB; if it does (as bootleg carts tend to), you'll get the screen shown at the beginning of this video. On the chance that you do get a bootleg cartridge with these initial checks bypassed, it means that the pirate/seller disabled them first. The increased enemy spawn rate can only be triggered if the initial checks have been tampered with.
