  • Do you have a dark side like Tim? How much does brooding and being edgy really help an artist's career? Interesting questions to consider while listening to this song from Tim! The message is interesting, but what really stood out to me is how talented a piano player he is. When we went on that freestyle run for like 5 minutes, I was absolutely blown away!
Let me know what I can check out next!

There's another version of the song which I love, where he starts the solo and the audience also starts clapping offbeat, and he says: "Everyone starts clapping here, but now I'm gonna play a solo and I can't keep time... so shut the fuck up."

    • @andyb1653

I absolutely LOVE how he just sorta mutters "Oh yeah, you're offbeat. Wicked".
The crowd laughs, but they also STOP CLAPPING. Now THAT'S some powerful crowdwork.

When he made that different voice, at 5:11 and at 11:00, it's a parody of the singer Eddie Vedder, of the grunge band Pearl Jam. He even references it with the line "Jeremy spoken", as the song "Jeremy" by them talks about a real bullied boy that killed his classmates in that era. Grunge rock in general has songs with a lot of emotion in a deep and personal level, so yeah, Tim did that with a clear purpose.

That was the end of the show, but he did at least one encore. He's referring to the popularity of the romantic, dark brooding musician trope. He's a happy guy, but he can pretend to have a dark side - to keep his girlfriend, to write music Sony will publish, etc. At the end, he descends into madness and is nearly absorbed by the grim character he plays, but his naturally cheery self triumphs at last.

No matter how many times I watch this, I’m still blown away by his humungous talent. I suffered through several years of piano lessons as an ankle-biter, but despite encouragement from my parents and teacher (the beatings will continue until performance improves) I never got past the first few bars of Für Elise.
To watch such a virtuoso performance along with someone who appreciates it as much as I do makes it even more enjoyable. And he can sing a bit as well.
    Thanks for your great reaction.

Apparently Australian audiences clap on the off beat, it’s a thing 😂 This was a great reaction, yes Tim sticking his finger up to the record industry for their lack of interest in his kind of music as it lacks the depth of, say, Pearl Jam’s Jeremy and other songs that appeal to the “teenage market”! Thanks so much!

To be fair, most of the time we clap off-beat because we think it's funny. When people are doing more complex songs (like this), we usually don't. This time I think the audience just started at the wrong time and carried on.
(Personally, I hate when people clap along at all, but that's me)

    • @Mojova1

Is this sarcasm? The off beat is because of the echo in the hall.

Clapping *on* the off-beat is a normal thing. The way I've always heard it, clapping on 1-3 is the lame way to clap for stuck-up sheltered people and 2-4 is for people who have fun lol. But that's not what this crowd did. Over 16 beats they clapped 15 times. It drifted across beats and was awful.

Down the Tim Minchin rabbit hole…. This is one of his best performances ever! ❤ Always so deadpan and dry… hilarious 😂 Seriously though, Tim is an amazing composer, singer, actor and comedian. Whenever I hear Tim go up to those high notes, I'm reminded of Dimash Kudaibergen. Dimash is the most technically proficient singer on the planet. He can make his voice do just about anything. A great intro to Dimash is "S.O.S. d'un terrien en de'tresse." I love his performance in the Chinese reality show "I Am a Singer" (ua-cam.com/video/JEz1qGS0T1Q/v-deo.html), but in his performance at the Slavic Bazaar he's a bit more polished and his French is better. Both are simply beyond words. He has an epic catalog you can dive into while you're at it, as well, to fuel content for the channel.

You should take a look at "not perfect." In many ways it's one of Tim's more unique and thought provoking songs. There is also a performance where Tim and his drummer have a music duel which is hilarious but I can't for the life of me remember which. If I remember I'll post it here, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Offbeat means clapping on the 2 and the 4 rather than the 1 and the 3. The audience did it by accident because they were lagging behind. It's also referred to as the backbeat. It's where you would expect a snare drum in most rock/pop music.

And now you know why they wanted you to specifically play the awesome version 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the improv session.
I recommend a newer Tim song Briggs and he did for Australian quarantine. Housefyre (Lockdown video)
Another Music suggestion. Homefree's Ring of Fire ft Avi Kaplan. Avi is the second of the 3 big American acapella basses - Geoff Castellucci is the third in Voiceplay. Avi was with Pentatonix but left to play his own music and now lives in the Nashville area where Justin and Tim Foust live.
Avi's is a singer-songwriter and his most popular song is Change On the Rise which I recommend you do but he writes a broad range of other music. I just saw him in Denver a few days ago and am very stoked about him and his band. Another good one of his is First Place I Go.
Thanks for the fun reaction as always.

Yes....where Tim has written the music...he tends to adlib on stage when he gets his piano talking. This song is actually Tim letting out his frustrations to Sony Music for saying he wasn't deep enough to appeal to the Teenage Market enough to sell his music. Stuff you Sony Music.

Even in the Opera world its frowned upon if you can't read music but it didn't hold Luciano Pavarotti or Mario Lanza back , and in Pavarotti's case his pitch was absolutely perfect and he could spot an out of tune instrument from a mile away and he often did point it out when others failed to notice.
