    Summary of tips:
    1) Bring your book everywhere with you and look at it just like how you look at your phone to avoid public interaction.
    2) Read a book that you're interested in. You'll generally stick to it.
    3) Don't watch TV or do other shit. Read instead.
    4) Read different types of books that don't overlap, so you can read more than one book at a time with ease.
    5) Don't force yourself to read shit you don't like.
The end. These are really good tips and I don't understand all of the hate.

These are some of the most vicious comments I have ever received and this is a BOOK video. I made this because it was requested. People realized I read a lot and wanted to understand how I did it. I didn't make this to "brag about myself" if that's all you think it's about find a new video. I also appreciate the comments telling me I'm lying or not very intelligent, because of how I look. If that's how you think you lead a very sad life. I will be stopping comments in the near future if these continue.

WOW, some of these comments are so hateful. Everyone should read as fast as they want to and as much as they want to. She's not saying that everyone has to read like she does, she's just saying how she reads. I read very similar to her. No, its not a race or anything...but I have SO MANY books I want to read in my lifetime, and reading is my favorite thing, so that's what I do every evening after work. Some books go faster than others (depending how into them I am). And some I don't remember well, although I think that's because they just weren't memorable. Do you remember every single TV episode and movie you've watched? I don't watch very much TV anymore, I've pretty much replaced TV with reading. People always ask me how I read so much, and its that simple...I don't sit around playing apps and games a lot, I don't spend loads of time of social media, and I watch Netflix maybe 2 hours a week. Sometimes not even at all. Depends if I'm into a show or not. So my time is spend working, with my family around supper, and reading. When you read 3-4 hours a night, its easy to finish a book, especially if its short or YA. That's what I like to do. You read what you want to and how much you want to. As long as people are reading, even if its just a book a year, I think that's awesome!

There's some good tips here. Assume a reading speed of 250 words a minute. Say a book can typically range from 60,000 to 100,000 words. That's 4 to 7 hours or so, on average, to read a book, or 64 to 112 hours to read 16 books. With about 720 hours in a month, assume there are 480 waking hours. That means at an average speed of reading, 16 books a month would take about 14 to 24 percent of one's waking time or about 3.5 to 6 hours a day. GS says she's a fast reader but not a speed reader, so cut that in half to get a rough idea of her number of reading hours. I wonder if she has any tips on how to concentrate and focus.

Yesss, me too. I read 15 books a month, pretty much every month. And I used to follow about 20 tv shows, which is waaaay too many. I dropped all of those and now I watch like 4 tv shows, 2 of which are in between seasons. And now I'm obsessed with reading and it sometimes takes way too much time, and I only get like 3 hours of sleep. So I gotta work on that.

I've pretty much replaced TV time with reading. Much more enjoyable for me! A lot of it happened when I worked for my local cable company and got the inside scoop on just how crooked the TV networks really are. I still watch Netflix, but maybe 2 hours a week? So not much. Reading is just much more relaxing for me :)

I tried yoga, routine, n now extremely strenuous exercise but I still am not able to get more sleep :(

Sometimes I am even delaying finishing the book as I want to be entangled in some world for extra time. I usually also read few books at once.

I feel like you're forgetting that some books are worth spending a lot of time on. No joke, it took me two months to read Wise Man's Fear, despite loving the story. Focusing on how many books I read, for me, kinda ruins reading. It makes me not want to challenge myself and read something a bit tougher, or something I might need to take breaks from. If that's not something that affects you, then that's great! But bear in mind that some books are worth their time.

  • @BrantK147

Speed reading is good for college and textbooks. However if you want to read literature I think you should take your time, specially if you're reading a dense book like, for example, Brothers Karamazov or Siddhartha. In those books there are passages that you want to dissect, delve into, meditate on, analyze, however you want to call it, in order to get as much as you can from your reading or get as close as you can to what the author intended to communicate.
IMHO if you read literature fast you don't know how to read literature. Enjoying literature fully (and all fine things in life, like wine, good food, fine art, classical music, etc), requires patience or time. You don't rush through the Louvre, unless you you don't know how to appreciate art.

    • @danwilliams1920

Bingo. The fact is, there are many books that aren't considered classics that this would apply to just as well. For instance, she mentions reading Game of Thrones. I've only read a little of that, myself, but I recall being quite impressed with the narrative voice and style, and believe it's worth slowing down to appreciate.

@@shubhamrc4379 Well yes. There is also a big difference between reading and hearing a book.
I haven't actually read a book full since I was 13. I always listen to them because I have dyslexia. I would say its actually more of a challenge reading a book correctly then comprehending the book and then projecting what is happening in your brain. Now if your trying to set a record or are rushing yourself to finish the book. Don't do it. Your not savoring the book's plot of events. I have a bunch of series I have heard and love and wish I could erase my mind to go and reread it. I know I can go back and read them again but its just not the same because I already know what's going to happen.

I think that we could all read more and watch tv less. I'm not a fast reader but I want to read as much as I can. I stutter with my English more than I would like and it's really starting to bother me. I have ignored reading most of my life but I really want to devote my self to it from now on. Plus all the best stories start in novels not in movies. Hollywood tends to butcher all great stories in one way or another.

if you miss the news you can read the papers instead.

I read really fast too(avg. 100 pages an hour), so I am normally so absorbed by one plot that I read it until it's done, but I have been known to start multiple books when I have a hankering for one genre. Downloading books on my phone is my salvation, because I no longer have to carry 3 books in my purse and have to worry about finishing them. My biggest suggestion for reading fast is an addition to one of yours: once you find a genre that you enjoy, look for series in that genre that have a lot of books already released, or is already finished. That way, you don't have to wait a whole year to read the next book that you finished in an hour or three! :)

You bring up good points. I used to read so slow years ago, but now when I pick up a book I usually get through it in 1-2 days, but that usually depends on what you said, if the book has good reviews and something that would seriously interest me. I mean I've readin a 600-700 page book in 2 days b/c it was soooo good and I could not put it down. But as long as the book is good and seriously interests you, you will not put it down and end up reading it fairly quickly.

I'm a fast reader and can read a book in a day but that was when I had more free time. Wish I was still a teenager or a student, because now when I do have free time I am too tired to be able to focus on reading, so my tv shows watching has gone up. Which I am okay with because when I have breaks I can catch back up. I used to say so much that people should watch less tv to read books, and although that is great... in a busy adult life it makes sense why some people will choose a tv show over a book, as books tend to require a lot more energy. That being said when I do get time to read I read like a crazy person!

i remember i would read a shit ton in middle school and ninth grade (not 16 books a month lolol but still a lot) but when i went through sophmore year, i would get tired to the point of sleeping in the car while my mom drove me on my way home from school, and i would only have energy to read what i needed for english class, and rarely anything else. plus now im writing for fun and that takes up a lot of time as well, even if ive written 235 pages already. im taking advantage of summer now and reading as much as i can, since i know during junior year i'll be really busy with 2 AP classes. i miss being able to read so much, even if i still read fast, but you inspire me to try harder, so thank you

First, Loved your video it motivates me to challenge myself to read more..... Me & my husband actually debated about this. He thinks it’s better to read slower pace to retain the information. I, on the other hand tend to read faster. (At the time I had did a book a day for 3 days & he was taking his time around a couple weeks to finish 1) We realized that our different preference varied between the type of books we like to read. I read self-transformation books & I just take notes on the important info while reading & like to get through it faster to get more collective info, I feel like the things that are supposed to stand out will stand out & if I have to read it again, I will. But I understand that he likes religious information, historical or story-type books. Which in that scenario I would probably read slower & more intimately with more reflection during my time of reading to absorb & make a personal connection with my reading. So it really varies. People don’t have to have the same opinion. Everyone should just do what they feel comfortable with.

I don't read as many books as you a month, I think I average 5 a month, but some of the suggestions you gave are things I also do. I read multiple books at once and I always keep a small mass market paperback in my bag for when I leave the house. My fiancé drives most of the time so I read in the car a lot. I used to get car sickness a lot as a kid and sometimes still do but for some reason, maybe because I'm more absorbed when I read now, I do fine with reading in the car now. I also read when my son naps, during the day when he's absorbed with playing alone for a bit, and after he goes to sleep until I get tired. One of my tips is to read small books when you are reading big books, whether it is a middle grade or just a short ya or adult novel, or poetry collection. That also goes along with reading multiple books at once. :)

And I also bring a book with me in my purse to every place I visit. I can read slightly faster than average because I read books aloud and set goals for myself throughout the book. "I will finish this paragraph before mum calls me for dinner" or "I must finish chapter nine in ten minutes." And your videos are like a gift! Tysm for making them, they really help me and encourage me to try to write and make frequent trips to the library. ♡

I also read three books at a time, and have never had a problem discerning the two stories from each other. I feel like it would be difficult to confuse the stories since everything is different.. Writing styles are different, so are characters and plots really should be too. But that's just how I see it. Don't know how it is for other people.
I usually have a book with me everywhere too, as well as a notebook. In fact, most of the time I carry a tiny notebook in my purse... but that's because I'm a writer. I'm working on my own book right now which typically takes up 1-7 hours of my day depending on if I have time to work on it while at work or on lunch break or on a half day, etc. So my reading time is usually about 2 hours before I go to bed.
I'm not a fast reader at all. I like to really get absorbed in it and tend to read slowly trying to get it in the same tone that I think the writer meant it in. But even then I'm still able to read quite a few books a year. Nowhere near 16 a month though.

Curiousity actually makes me wanna read the books, the cool & nice cover was like a bonus. Then look for a national/international bestseller w/ 1-3 pages of praises by influential media or a very good synopsis that'll attract me to buy it. I also like if the story might be connected w/ my own life or someone's life that i know so that i could pass it on to them like a hidden message. Mostly i'm avoiding a teenage love story or something lovey dovey that'll make me cringe & i really enjoy more on the life lesson. Don't forget to set the reading challenge on goodreads. It really helps me to discipline myself & reminds me to pick up a book everyday & read maybe like 1-2 chapters a day. If it's irresistable then maybe up to half the book. Treat yourself w/ a good coffee/tea/something sweet. Now i am currently reading 3 books about woman. 1 chapter per book if i am lazy. Btw pardon my grammar 😅

I take a book with me everywhere I go, too - whether it be a PB/HB, my Fire Tablet, my Kindle PW, or my Nexus 6 - I have something to read along with me, always. I use public transportation, so I like to read while on the city bus.
I'm one of those people that only reads 1 book at once. I don't like the chance of mixing up plots in my head as I read. I understand some people can handle reading 3-5 books interchangably, but it's just not me.
I agree with you about choosing to read books we believe we will like. Reading whatever one likes is something that I really believe in. However, I do also believe that one should broaden their horizons at times - reading-wise - as well. And, I don't base what I read on GR ratings. Sometimes, ratings on GR are bad because of other things, like readers not liking the author or something the author did/said, and that doesn't mean that the book would not still be good.
Just always remember this: Reading is a hobby - not a competition!
