I totally take your point, but if you reflect on it a bit you’ll realize that crucifixion would be totally unsuitable for the Nazis’ purposes. They were all about speed. They converted their gas-chambers from carbon-monoxide to Zyklon-B specifically because it killed twice as fast. Trying to kill hundreds of people at a time would become unmanageable if it took hours or days. This would not work for their assembly-line approach.

I did not expect a German doctor researching crucifixion in the 1940s to have used volunteers and leather straps.
Well, it is not like all German doctors were full-blown Nazis.. Remember that Germany was humiliated, by the treaty of Versailles, which made them ripe for propaganda, but most were still humans. But at its peak, only 12% of the German population was actually a member of the Nazi party. Thinking every citizen of Germany in the 1940s was a Nazi is like thinking every citizen of Afghanistan is a member or supporter of Taliban.

When I heard the words "German" and "1940" I didn't expect the participants to be volunteers.

Which is why I liked Castlevania's explanation of Vampires brains getting confused trying to process geometric shapes held too closely which makes them recoil.
The best part of that is that vampire legends have them extremely long-lived, but those fictional monsters weren't even invented until relatively recently, only being a bit over a thousand years old. So, that symbol's relevance actually predates the very idea of vampires.

I can tell you from personal and professional experience that fracturing the calcaneum (heel bone) is the singularly most excruciatingly painful injury or illness that can occur. Having a nail driven through both would be enough to make the person pass out, at least until they were hoisted, and then subjected to the other atrocities that accompany a crucifixion.
The prophecy said that Jesus would not break one bone, so if they drove a nail through his heel, then that proves that Jesus was not the Messiah.

I vaguely remember watching a documentary on crucifiction that included a scientist experimenting on volunteers, using slings to hold the hands and feet, and how quickly their oxygen levels began to get wonky. None of them lasted more than an hour before the scientist was like "that's enough" and made them come down because they were having more and more difficulty breathing.

What was even more brutal was the hate I got from those who refused to believe there was ever more than one crucifiction.

In Roman times crucifixtion was an involved and costly proceedure. Jesus would be crucified as he rebelled against the Roman empire, but what of the two thieves on the hill next to him. It was suggested that they were rebels against Rome as well.
You're right. The word in modern bibles is indeed thief. In the original Greek and Latin texts, the word used has the connotation of "Rebel". Sadly, this kind of mistranslation happens all too often.

Some of the symbols would differ, obviously. Something that had to be closely attended would not carry the same import, and it had to fit with cryptic references of suffering from the much earlier Hebrew psalms and later prophetic reference, integrated into the Jewish story as it was. Classic Christian faith expresses "mad respect" as it were for God to carry out something that graphic when every other manifestation of God before that was of something simply that would not suffer touching by the unholy. But God had the ability -- "once for all" -- to surrender for the sake of mercy. To forgive us our sins and to die for our sins, it turns out, are wrapped up in one thing.
Imagine if the Christian god could have just forgiven all sin. We mere mortals are expected to forgive those who sin against us, without the torture of some innocent third party.

Contrary to popular depictions in artwork, the nails would have been driven through the wrists not the hands. Otherwise the nail would have torn through their hand and they would have slipped off.
Though it's possible the victim might have been tied to the cross in addition to being nailed.

No, they think it was through the hands because that's how about 90% of religious iconography depicted it.
Actually, it's a linguistic difference. In many languages, including ancient Hebrew (and modern Russian), there aren't distinct words for arm and hand. They use one word for the entire limb. So when translators encounter this word, they have to determine which was meant. Early translators translated it as hand, which led to the popular misconception. Artwork (which was much more accessible, especially to those who couldn't read) just solidified it in people's mind.
I went to a church of England primary school and every time we saw Jesus up on that cross, or anyone for that matter, the nails were in the palms and one nail through both feet as they were laid one on top of the other so the nail went through the top and soul of each foot. This was 30 odd years ago though.
I think it has something to do with some OT passage. Jesus had to have it driven through his hand. Back in those days, supposedly, the wrist was considered part of the hand,.

Also, a spear in the side was often inflicted bc they would pierce the organs of the body like the liver, kidneys, stomach, and sometimes intestines so that the internal bodyfluids would fester out of the body so that the victims could literally feel the life draining out of their bodies and inflict mental anguish bc of the amount of irritation the leaking bodily fluids would cause. Bc it would feel like a bug crawling on your skin AND did in fact attract bugs into your body. Then there were the vultures, pecking away at your flesh and eating you alive, not being able to shoo them away. It is ridiculous how cruel humans can be

One of the details often omitted in crucifixion accounts--and definitely not shown in art!--is the fact that victims were forced to relieve themselves while fastened on the cross.
Jesus was never crucified. Some of the earlier manuscripts say "stake" instead of "cross.' The roman soldiers shoved a spear up Jesus' ass. That is how he died.

I've wondered if the crucified person's family stayed with him/her until they died. It seems that watching a loved one die that way would be almost as horrific as actually dying that way yourself.
That's why the Romans did these things so publicly. They were counting on all the family, friends, and members of the community being so traumatized after witnessing this that they'd be too terrified to even think of stepping out of line.
If it were someone I loved, I would stay until they were gone.

By the legend St Peter asked the Roman’s to crucify him upside down because he wasn’t fit to die the same way as Christ. I am not Christian but I do respect the story.
That story seems to have its origin in the ancient text "The Acts of Peter". The story tells us that Peter meets a talking dog and a flying wizard, and he resurrects a dead fish. Peter eventually is condemned to death for teaching the ladies of the town that they should not have sexual relations even with their husbands.
This is the sort of thing that early Christians liked to write and read. Nothing they wrote can be trusted.

FWIW, in church growing up, we were taught the more medically accurate description of how crucifixion actually causes death, pretty much all of which was talked about here. It did help give a better sense of truly just how brutal and agonizing it was, and what all He went through for us.

I always wondered why all the paintings show it through their hands.
I know the language didn't use a word that would tell the difference between a hand or wrist but some painters had to have seen some in person.
It is small things like this that made me basically agnostic. What other parts of the Bible are missing or so poorly translated that their meaning is lost forever.
Or translated for political reasons. A word can have several meanings, but you pick the one meaning that promotes your agenda versus what the author meant in context.
My favourite fun fact. The name 'Jehovah' doesn't exist. The writings referred to 'JHVH' and the Bible scribes filled in the wrong vowels. Later scholars established the name as 'Jahveh'

I still believe in God, but I also believe the Bible is scripture written by imperfect man that has been translated many times over. So between simple misrecollection, exaggeration (political or otherwise) and translation, it should be without saying we can't take it as 100% undeniable fact as some do. Consider that they were legit persecuted for a period, and had to gather in hiding.
They used symbols to communicate, and as trailheads in catacombs where they worshipped in hiding; the iconic Christian fish is another symbol we get from that period.

No canonical text refers to the death of Saint Peter. Apart from the Acts of Peter, the earliest attestation that Saint Peter was executed by crucifixion is found in Adversus Gnosticos Scorpiace, a treatise composed by Tertullian in the first decade of the 3rd century

The "hand" in those times was considered to start mid forearm.
I've always heard that the term translated "hand" refers to a larger part than just the hand. We don't have an equivalent word in English.
You're onto something, even in Arabic a relative to the language that Jesus spoke, they refer to the foot as the bottom of the leg. Good catch
@ZeroOneInfinity it's not an assumption and 1 of my senior combat medics explained how this all worked in a catholic mass. The nail goes through a specific muscle group under the major veins so the circulation is cut off and the nail can rest between the wrist bones that were still considered the hand at the time. I would love to show a diagram of how it was explained to me where he showed the entry and exit and the technique of missing all the important stuff, but I digress, the end of the large forearm muscles were considered to be the start of the hand in those times.
@WeatherWonders before the 1300s the hand was everything from the major muscle group in the forearm and down. It included 6-8ish inches between the wrist and elbow.
I don't believe it. Nobody grabs you in the middle of your forearm and says, "I got your hand!!" Even thousands of years ago I don't believe half of the forearm was considered the hand. We should have EXACT proof of this as cutting off the hand was a common practice at the time. There is no doubt in my mind they didn't chop off half the forearm of every thief. You'll need to prove your statement.

God sacrificed himself to himself to save us from what he will do to us if we don't tell him how awesome his kid (who is also him) is.
There is a flip side to this argument. If Jesus knew the future, He knew He’d rise in three days, thus, may not have given a darn. Or, if He could see into the future and see that most folks really didn’t care, He might have wondered why He wasted His time for a group of ingrates.

I believe that since many crosses were REUSED, there were certainly ones that were planed on the backside. Maybe you refer to specific crosses that have been archaeologically recovered.
The cross post came later than when Christ was supposed to have been hung from the tree. Most people suffocated on the tree.
Many victims were also left on the cross until they rotted off and had their corpses picked apart my things like vultures. They very rarely had a burial. Like impaling, this was done to let those who saw the victims know what would happen to them if they crossed the powers that be. Also like impalement, methods were developed to keep the victim alive for as long as possible, to prolong the suffering. Imagine if impalement were the preferred method of execution of the Romans in the first century if you get my drift.

I know the misconception came from a poor translation, but if the arms are tied to the cross, is there any reason why nails in the palm of the hand wouldn't work? Not for support, but just as an added but of torture, which the Romans were not unknown to do.

Trying to nail down the history of crucifixion can be excruciating.
The thumbnail is certainly incorrect - hands can't support body weight at all. Even when nailed through the wrists straps were sometimes used.
So...with everything going on in the world right now, then watching this, I can only come to the conclusion that humans have an inexplicably sadistic streak that's so far beyond anything reasonable...it's just such a waste. We are capable of such beautiful and wondrous acts, inventions and a sort of abstract "evolution" seemingly unique to our species, yet it seems we will never discard the thoroughly unnecessary urge to inflict abject cruelty on nature, animals and other humans.
I'm looking for the right word and I can't find it. Maybe "disappointing" is it. We are so much better than that. Though in practice, we aren't. Yes, I'm disappointed more than anything. It's just so senseless.
Humans are fallen. God made us perfect, in His own image, which is why we have so many wonderful characteristics. But we have a sin nature inherited from our first ancestors, Adam and Eve, who rebelled. God still loves us, but as for us with these horrible tendencies we can't get along with Him, we can't be at peace with each other nor with Him. That's why Jesus, God's sinless Son, was willing to undergo this torture, to pay the penalty for all of humanity's sins. To bring us to God. He's the only One who could die like this on our behalf, and then He powerfullly rose from the dead 3 days later.

There's a theory about lead contamination causing mental problems in ancient Romans, which caused them to be so cruel.
@@pikachuchujelly7628 The Romans conquered the known world from England to Northern Africa, they practiced crucifixion everywhere they went, and surely it would be a stretch to say they all had lead poisoning in all those places while none of their victims did.
Lest we forget the much celebrated yearly San Pedro Cutud Lenten rites of the Philippines, where devotees willingly have themselves crucified (although in a more humane, less painful and death inducing way) to reenact Christ's own crucifixion.
So they’re tied up instead of nailed?
