  • In this video I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Ai technology such as Midjourney v5 or Dall-e, my opinion on whether I think it's the end of 'real' photography, how it will change the industry, and show you all some pretty convincing Ai generated images.
Huge thankyou to John Taylor (@pushedonestop on Instagram) for generating the images for this video.

👍🏻 Nice video. Honestly I don’t even know if I’ve made my mind up about it all myself yet … I’m trying to stay on top of it just to keep up more than anything. But you’re dead right - it can never do genuine documentary, thankfully, which is kind of my favourite stuff to shoot and to look at.
Cheers for the shout. You’re welcome for the pics, I’m hopelessly addicted to it so no doubt I’ll keep playing about but I dunno if I’ll be looking back at he images in the same way I look at the shots I took of my kids birth or even daft stuff like them eating their breakfast. The emotional connection is what makes all art valuable.

      Thanks mate!
Yeah I think only time will tell what the actual implications in society will be because of stuff like this... read something earlier today - 'ai won't replace you, people using ai will' which I feel like sums up the whole situation perfectly.
Yeah there'll always be a huge interest in 'real' photography. look at how many people are into analog film stuff at the moment.. potentially an all time high? the demand for photographers will always be there, I just think it'll be harder to make money from it

The image of the young lads over the hosing estate and the guy in the shop with the blurred background are insane tho.

yeah man really realistic... I think they were made using 'in the style of tish murtha' prompts. if you're not familiar with her work, those are INSANELY close to the kind of stuff she used to shoot.

It’s like looking through a window pane with many of those pictures, there is a distance and missing emotion. Some look much to smooth, others reveal the fake, if you know the originals (like the Vivian Maier style) And yes, much of this, is what many people like to see and don’t notice this window pane and missing emotion. Hunting for likes makes many blind and the world is yearning for for fakes. As a photographer with a view on many things behind the scene I am not afraid about AI, rather more afraid about the humans who avoid their emotions and try to hide behind the virtual reality. I even think, this development is a great chance for those photographers, who do their work with passion and empathy. Virtual pictures without real stories behind might be impressive like a movie sometimes is, but real life is something different and can only be shown by photographers who see more levels but a catchy motive.

yes I absolutely agree! and I hope many others do too, and will always value the human element of 'real' photography. i think my main worry is when it reaches the next level and it becomes totally indistinguishable from real photos, I think the Internet will be flooded with so many fake images, people won't know what's real and what's not and it will have a very strange effect on how people view and appreciate art.

Incredible what's happening in the AI space at the moment, the designer in me is excited to potentially use this to create storyboards for creative but the photography side isn't! Maybe there will be a software that can differentiate AI generated images vs normal and let people know 👀

I assume there will be something! I mean there's forensic technology at the moment that can tell you if an image has been altered in any way, so I guess there'll be similar for AI. Whether it will be easily available to the public or not I dont know...

didn't expect this to go that deep but when you started with the watermelon analogy i was all for it.
my super summed up take is, on top of seconding everything you said, i lowkey (joking) believe we are AI.
i mean this as a random internet thought but the idea of our existence being a simulation, like a Civilization game, starts for some reason to take some strenght for me, therefore art itself has some meaning to us that we've given to it. thus we cannot try to compare it to AI generated "art".
quite hard to explain myself on a short comment, but on top of everything i just wanna clarify i'm against AI when it comes to end product in art.

hahaha thank you! just touching on one side of it, there's many many advantages and disadvantages that im sure will arise over the next couple of years.
You might be right, definitely an interesting concept to dive into and think about. Definitely makes theories like that 10x more believable than 10 years ago.
but yes, overall im mostly against ai, just trying to adapt as it comes!

There are definitely two (or more) sides to this. More productivity, better quality, faster accomplishments could be beneficial. The thing that makes me worried about it is how many people don't want to pay for experience anymore because someone without knowledge can just ask AI to do something for them. I write on the side and have seen too many requests for work using AI with low pay rates because they expect it to do most of the work and you just get a few bucks for steering the boat. The scary part of it is when it is going to be used to fake content. Pictures, deep fake videos, even AI movies are coming. Forget green screen as it's not going to be needed in a short time in the future.

    • @EddyMaynard
      @EddyMaynard  Рік тому

yeah I think there'll always be clients who want to pay for the genuine thing, but I think the main use of it will be for people just trying to save some money. in the long run though that might just drive up the prices for the 'authentic, genuine' thing... think wedding dresses for example - people pay a ton of money for a custom dress, a lot more than they paid back in Victorian times when most people were able to make dresses... being able to create fake photos will drive a lot of people away from photography but maybe make a better living for the people who stick at it... who knows anyway.
and definitely share your concerns about all the deepfake stuff!

If clients get lazy and tight with their money, then yes. It won’t ruin photography for yourself as AI won’t take your holiday photos. AI won’t affect you as a photographer making photos of things you love. AI will only benefit clients who don’t want to pay anymore but AI can’t shoot a commercial job. AI only makes what you could call, stock photos.

With AI photography you cannot trust any news photo going back at least 10 years (unless you are the photographer or know them personally) as we know gov likes to meddle in news and they always have access to tech decade before civilians. Think of all those recent early days of photography invention photos suddenly flooding the internet- is it AI or secret photo stash a human had?
